Descendants of Jacob KENT - 8 Sep 1998 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- Jacob KENT was born about 1764 in HOLLAND. He died after 1850 in Washtenaw Co., Michigan. Jacob was born in HOLLAND and came to Maryland as a child. He was employed for General Washington as a teamster during the Revolution. During the war of 1812 acted as a scout working as an independant under General Hull so does not show on the list of soldiers at the surrender of Detroit. he "..won many praises from the officers and soldiers for courage displayed on many a battlefield." He owned most if not all of the cattle in the Western States during that time, and fresh meat being scarce, sold all of his cattle to Congress. With this money, that he received four years after the sale, he moved to Canada and bought a large tract of land. The 1850 Census for Freedom Twp., Washtenaw Co., Michigan shows Jacob Kent age 86, living alone next door to his son(grandson ?) Daniel. Jacob owns real estate valued at $1000.00 A Mary Kent is found in the 1850 Mortality Index for Washtenaw County, Michigan. She died at the age of 88 "old age", in Nov of 1850. She was born in New York. This may possibly be the wife of Jacob I. Jacob KENT1 was born in 1784 in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. A. Daniel KENT1,2,3,4 was born about 1805 in Dayton, Ohio. Daniel was born in Dayton, Ohio, but grew to manhood in Canada. Daniel and his family came to Washtenaw County, Michigan in July of 1832. In 1834, Daniel entered some land near Lodi twp on the old "Chicago Turnpike" road. He built a tavern, and as immigration was very heavy for a few years, business prospered, and he gained quite a competency from his farm and tavern. A, 24th Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry. On 12 June 1889 he recieved an increase in his military pension. It states that he is to receive a pension in the amount of $24.00 per month. "This pension being for disease of the eyes result of measles". He was discharged 8 Jul 1865. He ran a livery stable in Saline, Michigan. William KENT was married to Eveline JACKSON on 10 Nov 1859 in Sylvan, Washtenaw Co., Michigan.8 Eveline JACKSON was born on 27 May 1844 in Lockport, Niagara Co., New York.9 She died on 8 Apr 1910 in Billings Twp., Gladwin Co., Michigan.9 The death returns for the month of April, 1910 for Billings Township lists Eveline Kent. She died of "senile decay" at the age of 64 years, 10 months, 12 days. Eva M. Jackson, the subject of this sketch, was born in Lockport, New York, May 27, 1844, and with her parents moved to Washtenaw county, Michigan, at the age of 12. She was married Nov. 10, 1859, to Wiliam Kent, who survives her. They and their two sons, George William and Marshall, moved to Billings, Gladwin county, in 1885, where they have since resided. Four sons were born to this union, of which two are living: George W., born Jan. 31, 1867, and Marshall L., born Sept. 24, 1869. She leaves two sisters: Mrs. M. Marshall's son Claude F., was the county registrar that completed the certificate He was buried on 15 May 1951 in Billings Cemetery, Gladwin Co., Michigan. He was a Farmer, Sawmill, Postmaster, Started Phone Company. In 1890 the brothers Marshall and George Kent ran a planing and saw mill. George was the sawyer and Marshall the engine man. The Billings General Store was built in 1906 and closed in 1929. Marshall was the post master in Billings until 1926. The Billings telephone exchange was started in 1906 by George, Marshall and James Spence. The also started a cider mill, cheese factory and blacksmith shop which they started in 1907. Marshall Lucius 'Marsh' KENT 6 was married to Helen Choate COLBECK on 15 Jul 1896 in Billings Twp., Gladwin Co., Michigan.12 Helen Choate COLBECK6 was born on 29 Jan 1878 in Oxford, Ontario, Canada. She died on 18 Dec 1961 in Gladwin Co., Michigan.13 Helen died of kidney failure - (uremia - chronic nephrosclerosis) at the Gladwin Hospital. She was buried on 21 Dec 1961 in Billings Cemetery, Gladwin Co., Michigan. Helen was born in Oxford County, Ontario, Canada and care with the family to Billings Twp., Gladwin County, Michigan in 1880. On July 15, 1896, Marshall and Helen were married. The were attended by her sister, Nina C. Fox and her brother Hugh. Age 86 years. Nina Kent was born February 6, 1906 to Marshall and Helen Kent in Beaverton, Michigan. She married Lloyd Erskine on July 5, 1924. He died January 2, 1973. They owned and operated a farm in Fremont Township all of their married lives. Mrs. Erskine was a member of the Nelson United Methodist Church and its Women's Society. Surviving are four son, one daughter and their spouses. Rolland and Dorothy Erskine, Duane and Mary Jane Erskine, all of Hemlock; Wesely and Lorraine Erskine, Elkhorn, Wis.; Harold and Marlyn Erskine, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Dolores and Duane Aelick, Brownstown, Ind.; 18 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; a brother, Millard Kent and a sister, Evelyn Miller; several nieces and nephews. A brother, Claude Kent predeceased her. Funeral service will take place 11:00 am Monday at the Nelson United Methodist Church. Rev. Edwin C. Collver will officiate with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the WL Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 201 N.
