    1. some list guidelines
    2. Lin Wright
    3. Welcome to the KENT surname list. There are a few subscribers on the list and digest (about a dozen). This list is closed which means only subscribers can post to the list. This was done to cut down on spam. I am going to proceed with the assumption that you all know and understand the basics of email list behavior. It you new to the internet or new to email lists, write to me privately and I go into that in more detail and send a couple of urls. There are a couple of guidelines for this list that I did want to mention since some other lists do it differently. 1. Reply to the whole list if your message is of general interest. 1a. Send replies to the list as well since there may be one or more other people on the list interested in the answer - and it goes in the archives so that someone searching the archives who finds the query might also find the answer. 2. Reply to the individual only when it's a personal message, to send affirmations and "me too" messages, to ask for clarification (see 4b) or more information, etc. 3. When unsure about whether a message should go to everyone or just to the poster, send it privately or ask me. 4. When posting a query, please take a minute to reread it before posting it to make sure it's clear, and names and dates are correct. Include sources when you have them or let us know when you don't -- it's okay to not have sources or for your source to be some papers Great Aunt Edna had, or Ancestry File or whatever, but let people know so they can better help answer the question posted. 4a. Let people know where you already looked so they don't go back over the same territory in the effort to help you. 4b. When someone privately asks for more information, clarification, sources, etc., please do not take offense. If a correction needs to be made to a query, please send the clarification to the list both for the benefit of the readers and for the archives. 5. Only genealogical messages are appropriate for this list. Anything else -- missing children, virus warnings, poetry (even about genealogy), etc. -- is not appropriate. If unsure, send it to me and I'll make the determination. 6. Remember that all messages are, in their creation, copyrighted. Only the person who wrote it has the right to copy it or send it to someone or someplace else. This is true of web sites as well. Sometimes we might want to share a particular piece of information we found on the web with the list. It's best if you ask permission first. Second best is only including a small amount and including the url (web address) so that others can go there themselves. 6a. Do not send large amounts of data found on someone's web site without written permission. Always attribute the source - who wrote or compiled the innformation and whee can others find it. 6b. While you should ask for permission before sending someone's email to someone else or to another list, if you want forward a list message and don't have specific permission, please send a copy to the person who wrote the original message. For example, if someone has a question about a KENT in Gloucester Massachusetts, it might be good to send it to the Essex-roots lists (Essex County, Massachusetts). The best thing is to write to the person who made the original post and either suggest they post to Essex-roots or ask permission to do it for them. If not at least when you send it to Essex-roots-l, include the original poster in the cc: line. Lin Wright list owner -- Lin Wright ethelind@athens.net -- ethelindw@aol.com -- ethelind@arches.uga.edu Never forward email messages to anyone without the persission of the writer. In this case, you have my permission. But who else would want it?
