I am still searching for my Kent ancestry and though many researchers are working on the Kent name, apparently no one is working on my particular line. Is there anyone out there who is?? I need help. Seeking parents of William H. Kent b 1828 in Deckertown, Wantage Sussex, NJ mar Catherine Westfall. Is William's father Abner Kent son of John and Rhoda Meeker Kent? Is John's father Simon Kent and Marietje Spier? I believe Simon Kent, John Kent and Abner Kent were born in Essex Co. NJ. but have no proof. Help if you can. Thanks Nancy Kent Thoben
I just wanted to thank Lin publicly for her help and assistance. A real asset to the Kent-L list. Thanks Lin! Jim Winston Piper965@aol.com

Jim, I'm at work and didn't have your email address handy, but thought others might be interested, too, so I'm posting this to the list. For some reason your Raiford problem fascinates me. I ducked downstairs and checked the 1850 census index for NC. There weren't too many KENTS so I copied them all: Amanda Carv 378 Archilus Cald 957 Benjamin Bunc 313 Catharine Dvie 407 Fersbe Dvie 421 Frances Beau 409 Jane Dvie 407 John Cata 332 Malinda Dvie 332 Mary Carv 372 Mary Crav 301 Michael John 070 Mourning Nash 289 Nelson John 070 Philo Cata 331 Sarah Casw 221 Susan Carv 372 Wiley Dvie 376 William Dvie 429 William D. Clfv 188 No Raiford. Interesting aside - surprised at the number of women heads of household. Decided to check the entry for Mourning since it was Nash county and I remember you were looking a Mourning. Also, there was a Henry H. PRIDGEN in Nash County at the same time (256). Checked the Henry H. Pridgen. Single man, 30something (didn't write it down) not the family. Mourning KENT, 70, in family of B. H. BOTTOMS - possibly Willie BOTTOMS, 35, is daughter of Mourning KENT. Could this be Raiford's mother? Back to the indices. No 1850 for South Carolina on the shelf; no Raiford KENT in Georgia or Alabama, but hit on Alabama, Greene County, 302. Found: Raiford KENT, 39, b. NC, Prim. Baptist minister Celia B., 34, b. NC Henry H., 17, b. AL Sally C., 12, b. AL Mourning E. J., 8, b. AL Francis W., 6, b. AL (if this is John Frank the date you have is right, but child of 2nd marriage) Madison M., 5, b. AL (must by your Matthew) Albert, 3, b. AL Martha, 1, b. AL Christie, 1, b. AL (Martha and Christie were not called twins; I would still say Albert born in Nov 1846 rather than Nov 1847; if your other dates are correct Martha would be just about 2, and Christie 1) There is a Rowford in Alabama in 1840 index in Cherokee County. Probably the same guy. There is Mourning in 1830 index in North Carolina, probably the same as above, meaning she was widowed some time before 1830. No time to investigate further. Lin Wright

Did they have SC also? I'm still looking for Nathaniel Kent's parents. Nathaniel Kent was b. abt 1766 in NC. His son, also named Nathaniel was b. 1800 in SC. Then they all moved to Smith Co TN where they died. Nathan Kent, Sr. probably had more children move to Smith Co TN than the one I can account for. There were other Kent's there that I have not connected yet. My line includes the following names: Nathan Jr. & Martha GILL m. abt 1820 & had the following children: James H, Joseph, Joshua P., Jesse G, Margaret, Susan, Lydia, Jackson C, John J., Andrew & Frances Elizabeth. Joseph (son of Nathan Jr.) had the following known children: Henry, Sarah & John Joshua P. (son of Nathan Jr.) had the following children: Valentine D., Nathaniel Thomas, Martha M., Mary Ellen, James Andrew, Everline B., Peneloff W. Robert A., Elizabeth Fannie, Fountain L, Maggie V., Lesnella J. & George Washington. These children were from his first wife Elizabeth S. LYON. Three other children by wife, Lillie Ann TAYLOR, were Ollie Mai, Alice M., & Cora Lee. Margaret married Josiah Sircy & their known children were: James H., Rancis (could this actually be Francis?), Milus J., Virginia, Wade H., Margaret & Nancy. Susan married William BARNETT & their known children were: Mary, George, James, Martha & Jackson Lydia married William DENNY and their known children were: William J., John C., Nathan A., Elizabeth F., & Mary C. John J. married Martha BARNETT & their known children were: William, Lemuel, & James So as we see the name that appear the most often is James. Any of you KENT researchers recognize these names in your line? Carmelita WLWMEGAWAT@aol.com

Ran across an articles "Grantees and Settlement of Hampton NH" by V. C. Sanborn in Essex Institute Historical Collections, 53 (1917) in which he writes (in a footnote on page 239): Kents were plentiful in Hampshire and Wiltshire. Vide will of Richard Pyle of Over Wallop in Hants., dated 26 Jan 1623-4, proved in P.C.C. 12 May 1626 (37 Ridley), mentioning "John Kent, my sister Osgood's son, Stephen and Thomas Kent, his brothers." William and Richard Kent were overseers of Pyle's will. I think Over Wallop was probably the habitat of Richard Kent, senior [Lin's note: that is, the Richard Kent of Newbury who was married to Emma]. It lies within the Wiltshire border, just across from Boscombe in Wilts. where lived a family of Kent, originating in Over Wallop. For Kent of Boscombe, vide Wiltshire Notes and Queries, vol. VV, pp. 228-35. The registers of Over Wallop should be searched,--they begin in 1550; also the wills at Winchester, which would doubtless reveal much. Cf. also notes of John Osgood, post, showing another Over Wallop connection. A Hampshire Lay Subsidy, 175/485, 7 James I (1609-10), showa at Nether Wallop Richard Kent, and at Over Wallop John Kent, John Kent "of Thongam", John Kent "farmer", Peter and Henry Osgood, John and Richard Pyle, and Philip Whiteare. <end of quote> My question, were the Over Wallop registers and wills at Winchester ever searched for Kents and were the results published? Citation, anyone? Also, of interest to someone on the essex-roots-list probably, the next article in the journal was Henry Wyckoff Belknap's "The English Ancestry of the Clements Family of Haverhill, Mass." I copied both if anyone is interested, email me. Lin -- Lin Wright ethelind@athens.net -- ethelindw@aol.com -- ethelind@arches.uga.edu
Looking for info on Rayford Kent b March 7, 1810 d Sept 5, 1872. He had a daughter by the name of Mourning Ann Elizabeth Jane Kent who married William Sylvester Winston. His first wife was Sarah (Sally) Pridgen and then he married Celia B. Pridgen her sister. Mourning was the daughter of Rayford and Celia. The Pridgen's are from NC so Rayford could be from NC. Thanks, Jim Winston Piper965@aol.com
Hi! A newcomer to the list -- and need all the help I can get on my great-great-grandmother. Susanna KENT born 5 Apr 1812 -- PA or OH Married John NELSON 21 Jun 1832, Tuscarawas Co., OH Died 25 Jan 1896, Coshocton Co., OH Re birthplace: in 1870 Census she gives "OH," in other years she gave "PA". In 1880 Census son gave b/p of both parents as OH. Birthdate from records of her daughter Lovina Norris. Death info from printed obit & Coshocton Co. OH newspapers. She and John had 11 children, 10 of whom survived her. Their entire married life was spent in Coshocton Co., OH where he was a shoemaker. Given names of children: Samuel, Mary, Elizabeth, Lovina, Catherine, James, John, Adam, Henry, Robert and Thomas. And that's all I have on Susanna!!!! Any help appreciated - and thanks Marian Price Engle
Have you looked in the 1880 SC census? There would be a soundex for them since the family would have had a small child. Also, by 1893 in Massachusetts most town vital records would list the parents (although probably not the mother's maiden name). If they were still in Fitchburg in 1900, the census might be able to show what state her parents were born in - which would give you a clue to where to look for their marriage record. Also, check 1910 and 1920 MA census for the family - see if they stayed in Fitchburg. Did you try Mass Vital Records for her death record? I don't know if the Fitchburg/Leoninster area was big enough for a city directory, but it would be worth checking. Maybe the Fitchburg public library is online with a catalog or at least an address where you could write for infromation. I know there was a state census every 10 years in the "5" year, so maybe 1895, 1905, etc (if they are extant for Fitchburg) might give some clues and help tell how long they were in Fitchburg. Also, the USGenWeb Project page for Worcester County, MA might have some contact info in Fitchburg and a place for queries as well as other information. Good luck. I ordered two books yesterday from Tuttle Antiquarian Books in Vermont: L. Vernon Briggs, _Genealogies of the Different Families Bearing the Name of Kent in the United States, Together with Their Possible English Ancestry A.D. 1295-1898. 339pp. 1898. PHOTOCOPY: FLEX. VINYL COVERS E. I. Dale and E. E. Kent, History and Genealogy of the Kent Family, Descendants of Ricahrd Kent, Sr., Who Came to America in 1633. 143pp. 1899. PHOTOCOPY: FLEX. VINYL COVERS Exceeded my book budget for the month by a lot, but... Anyway, once they arrive I'll be happy to do lookups. Are there printed resources (other than the two books above) that have a lot of Kent material? Anything someone has available which they would be willing to check for others? There is a web page http://www.ionia-mi.net/~bwills/kent/ which has Kent queries and other information. Does anyone know of any other Kent web sites? The database is slowly growing from the things people have sent me and vital records and other material I have at hand. There are currently 688 individuals in the database which contains Kents, descendants with any surname, spouses and the parents of spouses (but not siblings of spouses unless they married Kents or Kent descendants). The concentration is in the northeastern United States, mostly Massachusetts and New Hampshire (which is where I have most of my information and my Kent lines are there) but by no means is it limited to that. Is anyone familiar with any of the gen2html type converters? Is it easy to make changes? How much space would a database of a couple of thousand people require? Lin Wright ethelind@athens.net

Does anyone have proof (or at least, more evidence) of which Sarah KENT married 1) Samuel GREENLEAF and 2) Peter TOPPAN. Someone sent me a descendancy for John and Emma (SHORT?) KENT which called her daughter of that couple. The Newbury Vital Records did not list the mother for early births. They called that John, born 1645, John jr. and his daughter Sara was born 01 Aug 1666. There is another John, born 1641, who married Mary HOBBS. They had a daughter Sara born 30 Aug 1667. Savage says that both Saras were daughters of John and Mary HOBBS. Torrey lists the Sarah who married Samuel GREENLEAF and Peter TOPPAN as being born in 1667. Can anyone add anything to help clarify who her parents are? Lin Wright -- Lin Wright ethelind@athens.net -- ethelindw@aol.com -- ethelind@arches.uga.edu

I had a request from John Fuller for the variations of the surname to be included within the scope of the list. The name KENT doesn't lend itself to the variations and permutations of so many other names.
