Here are the Kent "orphans" - people with the surname KENT whose parents have not yet been identified. One important convention I use that you should know about - in cases where a married woman's maiden name is unknown, I use the surname of the earliest identified spouse followed by an asterisk. I use this method in the database rather than using somthing like "unknown," "unk," "___," "??" or some of the other things people use because when you sort on a name field, the women who married KENT sort with the KENTs instead of with all the other women without known maiden names. Another couple of conventions I use: for infants who died young and who were never named or the name was not recorded, I use "unnamed" as the given name. For adults who have names but the name is not known to me, I use "(unknown)." In cases where a given name was a common familiar form for another name, I use the formal name as the first name and familiar name in quotes. I do this in almost all cases of individuals born before 1800 and usually before 1850 even when only the familiar form is known. Again, I do this as a database convention in helping to identify some orphans - so that Betty, Betsey, Eliza, Elisabeth, Elizabeth. Bettie, and Betsy all sort as the same name. I will gladly send a group sheet for the first generation or two of any of these orphans to anyone who requests them. Help me find parents for these folks! This is a comma delimited file. I have 4 vital records cds for Massachusetts counties: Barnstable, Essex, Plymouth and Suffolk. Each cd has all the published "Vital Records to 1850" series for towns in that county, and other published early records for towns which are not part of the series. Almost every town is covered (notable missing is Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts). I am wiling to do lookups if they are specific. Does anyone have access to vital records of other places and is willing to do lookups in them? I am hare at work on getting the database to a point where i can share it. There are now over 5000 names and stil lots to be entered. I will be putting what I currently have on my web page soon. (Actually, some is there now, but without an index, w/out having purged living people and I haven't yet writtenthe read.me files so won't post the url yet.) WILLIAM KENT is my oldest suspected KENT ancestor. He had a brother ELBERT. William Kent b abt 1783 in NC By 1790 his parents were in GA where Elbert was born. Abt 1810/11 William Kent, his wife an son arrive in Madison Co., AL. Bro Elbert shows up soon and marries Polly Clark. Then both Kent brothers and all of the Clarks turn up in Morgan Co., AL (across the TN River fromMadison Co. by 1830 My line starts with (1) William Kent 1783-1860? (2)Wiley Kent b abt 1805 m 1835, Polly Clark (a niece of the Polly Clark that his uncle Elbert Kent had married in Madison Co., AL) (3) David H. I did these slightly differently - the 2nd column is the state, so they are all VA. I photocopied the pages for GA, KY, LA, MD, MO, MS, NC, SC, TN. I'll post them as soon as I can. Those, along with the ones I already posted (AL, AR, FL) are the census I have access to. The indexes for most states are published by Accelerated Indexing Systems. They may contain errors and omissions. I am not reading the whole census, just transcribing those families found in the census, so if anyone knows of a KENT family or individual who was missed in the index, I'd appreciate knowing about it. If anyone has access to any of the other states indexes, I would appreciate it if you either list the Kents, or send me a copy of the page. You should be able to find all states at a National Archives and some at a large public library, university library, or genealogical library. So far no one jumped on board to coordinate, and as I have a fulltime job and try to have a life I can't do something that large-scale. I would like to try to at least compile the index of the 1850 US census (heads). On one of the other surname lists I am on, there is discussion about creating a surname census database. Is that a project that people on this list are interested in attempting - creating a database of every KENT enumerated in, say, the 1850 US census and 1851 British census? Is there an extant census from Ireland, Canada (isn't there an 1851 census from Quebec only?), Australia and New Zealand from that period which lists all the persons in the household? What about other countries, such as Germany for Kind/Kindt/Kint? Would anyone be interested in coordinating such a project, either just US or worldwide? I don't have the time to coordinate, but do have access to census films and indices from several southeastern states. Hi! I too have had absolutely no luck in my Kent branch...hopefully I will get some replies from someone who might know something helpful! The only information I have is of a Jane Kent b)1847 in Greene Co, NY. She married Orlando Alvord. Jane's parents were John Kent and Sally Waters. I have no dates or location but I'm assuming they were born between 1810 and 1830 and most likely came from NY. They were in the 1850 census but the 1840 one was barely readable so was of little help...If anyone can help I would be most greatful! Thanks in advance, Mara Kugler
