    3. To All: The new Kemp Surname Y-DNA Project is now setup with DNA Heritage. Links to the company: http://www.dnaheritage.com Links to the basics of DNA testing: http://www.dnaheritage.com/tutorial1.asp http://www.dnaheritage.com/ydna.asp Link to join the Kemp Surname Y-DNA Project: http://www.dnaheritage.com/oracle/join.asp?GroupUnique=885953287 The default marker order is 43 markers however an individual can order whatever level of marker test can best be purchased by the person. Now a little bit about why I chose DNA Heritage for the company to use for the Kemp Surname Y-DNA Project: Their 43 marker test is the highest resolution set of markers available in genetic genealogy research. That amount of markers also gives two individuals sharing the same surname and matching,or not matching, the greatest reliability of indeed being related or not related. Here is typical 43 marker results (these are real results) for two individuals: DYS YYC1593 YLU9585 19 14 14 385a 12 12 385b 14 14 388 12 12 389i 13 13 389ii 29 29 390 24 24 391 10 10 392 13 13 393 13 13 426 12 12 437 15 15 438 12 12 439 13 13 441 13 13 442 12 12 444 12 12 445 12 12 446 13 13 447 25 25 448 19 19 449 30 30 452 11 11 454 11 11 456 15 15 458 17 17 459a 10 10 459b 10 10 460 10 10 461 12 12 462 11 11 463 22 22 464a 15 15 464b 17 17 464c 17 17 464d 17 17 GATAA10 13 13 GATAC4/635 23 23 TAGAH4 11 11 GGAAT1B07 10 10 YCAIIa 19 19 YCAIIb 24 24 Now looking at the above 43 marker results matching you can readily see there is a lot of markers and the two individuals match on each specific marker. Also since they match then they will be related, but how are they related. Are the two individuals brothers, or uncle and nephew, or father and son, or grandfather and grandson, or cousins, etc. Well you can not tell the relation just from the results. That is where the paperwork (documentation) part of genealogy is so invaluable. Paperwork genealogy defines and establishs the relation and the dna results confirm the relation. I will be explaining more in other posts. Richard
