Research Opportunities •Dallas Public Library (1515 Young Street, Dallas), owns one of the major genealogical collections in the U.S with more than 69,000 volumes and 99,000 microforms. In the Genealogy Section on the 8th floor (214-670-1433) and Texas/Dallas Special Collections on the 7th floor (214-670-1435), you will find the largest collection of genealogical and historical materials in the South. All states and countries are represented, but the emphasis is heaviest on the 13 original colonies, the upper and lower South, and the Midwest. While the Western, Northwestern, and Southwestern states are representated, the collections are less inclusive. Open: Mon-Thurs 9 am-9 pm, Fri-Sat 9 am-5 pm, Sun 1 pm-5 pm. Some resources include 1790-1920 Federal census, military & pension indexes 1776-1912, ship passenger/customs, vital records, family histories, CD Rom library, vertical files, naturalization. Special Collections include Draper Manuscripts, American City Directories prior to 1862, Freedmen’s Bureau records, Slave Narratives, Loyalist records, CT Barbour & Hale Collection, FL Archives of Spanish Government, GA Biographical Questionnaires, LA & FL records of the Dioceses, ME Old Cemetery Assoc. Records, MA Corbin Collection - Torrey’s New England Marriages - Charles E. Banks & Holbrook Collections, NH Provincial and State Papers, NY Vosbury Collection, NC McCubbins Collection - Cherokee Indian Enrollment Cards - WPA Cemetery Inscription, OH DAR Collection - Surname Index, OK Pioneer Histories - Dawes Rolls, Eastern Cherokee Applications, PA Tract and Land Patent Books, SC Archives - State Plats - Leonardo Andrea Collection, TN land grants, records of Cherokee Indian Agency, TX Election Registers - Military Records - Confederate Pensions, VA land patents - Bounty Grants, and more. •National Archives-Fort Worth, Southwest Regional Branch, 501 W. Felix at Hemphill (817-334-5525), houses federal records and materials for the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas, including many Indian records concerning the Five Civilized Tribes Agency. Open Mon-Fri 8 am-4 pm. •Southern Methodist University, located on Hillcrest between Daniel and Mockingbird Lane (214-692-2327). The SMU campus has several libraries, including the Bridwell Theology Library (the major Texas repository for Methodist records), and the DeGolyer Library housing a respected Texana Collection.
