I have been searching for my Great Grandfather John (Jean) J. KEMP for years. Finally, I found he was born 18 Aug 1830 in Dunkerque, France. However, his naturalization shows him as being born in Belgium. He applied for citizenship in 1856 and naturalized in 1860 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. His parents were John Baptiste KEMP and Ann LOONIS. In some of the census films from Buffalo, NY he states he was born in France, Alsace Lorraine and Germany. Sometimes his name is KEMPF and KAMP. He married Ann KAVANAGH in 1855 in Buffalo, New York. His occupation was a sailor. He came to the US in 1841 making him 11 years of age, but we cannot find who he came with or if he came alone.
