The Kemp Family Association is pleased to announce its first International Reunion. This exciting opportunity will be held April 9-12, 1999, at the Christ Church College in Canterbury, England. This first ever chance for our international members to get together and share family history has been arranged through the generous efforts of K.F.A. member Shelagh Mason, who lives in Canterbury. It will be held in conjunction with the Reunion of the Stead/Steed One Name Study Group. Christ Church College has a very compact campus, by University standards, which means all facilities are within a maximum 5 minutes walk from each other, and usually a lot less. The College is situated just outside the City Walls, close to many sites of great historical importance, and is easily reached by road and rail. A walk into the city takes a mere 5-10 minutes, where many attractions await, not least of which is the Cathedral, the seat of the Church of England for the World. The College itself is built on some of the land belonging to St. Augustines Abbey, which celebrated 1,400 years of Christianity in 1997, and is next to the old monastery, now the Kings School houses of residence, and a former home of king Henry VIII. A vast range of accomodation is available in and around Canterbury, from B&Bs at about £25 per person, per night, to 4 star hotels at £180 per night. Accomodation is also available on the campus of Christ Church in recently modernized student rooms, which have en-suite showers. The rooms are single and are small (We must stress this to our overseas visitors who may not be used to the small room sizes that most University students endure), but the plan is that the only time you spend there is to sleep and shower. Each room comes with tea and coffee making facilities (but no fridge) and the usual towels and soap. The cost of B&B at the College is £26.25 per person per night, single accomodation only. The accomodation block is situated equidistant between the refectory and the seminar rooms in the recently refurbished and extended Old Sessions House that we will be using. There will also be a Reunion Buffet on Saturday Evening - strictly informal. The College also provides meals at a reasonable cost, and several are planned to be included in the schedule of events. Canterbury itself is well served with the usual range of Pubs for bar food and meals, together with cafes and restaurants for a diverge range of tastes. A number of Excursion Tours will also be offered, on a strictly first come basis, and at a slight additional cost. These tours will include the Canterbury Cathedral Archives, the Cathedral itself (not the usual tourist type tour) and a side trip to the quaint town of Wye, ancestral birthplace of John Kemp, Archbishop of Canterbury in the 15th Century. We will also have use of the Colleges Computer Suite. There will be a wide variety of programs, databases, family trees, CDs, and internet access available, as well as a color flatbed scanner, high resolution color printer and B&W laser printer. On Sunday, the joint Reunions will have a series of lectures available, including Irish Ancestry, Non-Anglican Resources, and Emigration. In addition, a number of genealogical groups will have displays. Groups invited include the Kent Family History Society, The Society of Genealogists and The Guild of One-Name Studies. The Kemp Family Association will also have a display at this meeting. Further information will be mailed shortly to all KFA members outside the U.S., as well as a notice being included in the newest issue of the Kemp Files (due to be mailed next week). A deposit of £20 per person (or equivalent) will be required with your reservation. If you just cant wait for a brochure, you can contact the KFA Secretary on the Internet at: [email protected]
