Surnames: Kempe,Bardolph,Boutevilain Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EZm.2ACIB/1431 Message Board Post: I was wondering if there is anyone out there who can answer a few questions on one of the Kemp's family crests. I have come across a listing for Allan Kempe's ( husband to Isabelle De Hastings - son of William Kempe - father of Jeffery Kempe) crest, found through the Visitation of Norfolk. In the description of Allan Kempe's crest, (which is quartered by eight, which means there are eight sections of various crests incorporated into Allan's crest) there are the following surnames I have been able to locate so far: 1.Kempe (of course) 2.Roger de Mohaut 3.John de Hastings (understandable) 4.Clark or Cheke 5.Robert Boutevilain 6.William BARDOLF(Bardolph) 7.unknown 8.unknown My question is this: Allan has these surnames in his crest. I don't see why he has Bardolph and Boutevilain in his crest. So far I haven't conncted these surnames to Allan's lines at all. Maybe someone else has? Question 2 is: Why would Allan have these surnames in his crest, and yet his 1st cousin once removed, Sir Thomas Kempe (married to Beatrix Leukenor) doesn't?! Beatrix is the third great granddaughter of William Bardolph. Bardolph's crest is one of the eight crest included in Allan's crest. Why not Thomas'? Seems like Thomas would have the Bardolph crest within his crest and not Allan. Has anyone found a connection from Allan to the Bardolph family other than through Thomas? Question 3: Does anyone have any idea how the Kempe connect to the Boutevilain family line? DESCRIPTION OF CREST: ARMS,-Quarterly of eight:1,Kempe, Gules, tree garbs within a bordure engrailed or; 2,Azure, a lion rampant argent; 3,Sable, three bars....,on a canton gules a saltire argent; 4,Or, a maunch gules; 5,Azure, a chevron between three birds argent, beaked and legged gules; 6,Argent, three crescents gules; 7,Azure, three cinquefoils or; 8,Azure, two chevrons sable. I have a website at http://dugamer.tripod.com/id27.html on more information on the Kempe/Kemp lines, and crests, if it would help.
