    1. [KEMP] Fwd: FW: Ira Kemp--Child of Elijah Kemp and Anna Wheeler
    2. David and/or Marie-Christine Kemp
    3. All, I took advantage of the national day of mourning earlier this week by visiting one of my ancestors in Arlington National Cemetery, Ira Kemp. Ira Kemp was born on approx. 18 August 1843 and died on approximately 06 July 1864. He was the oldest child of Elijah Kemp and Anna Wheeler. For reference, Elijah and Anna's fifth child, Judson Arthur Kemp, is my generation's great-great-grandfather (Elijah, Judson Arthur, Ira Judson, Harold James, the four Kemp boys). So, I believe this makes Ira my great-great-great-uncle, or something like that. Anyway, Ira fought in the Civil War where he was a private in Company L of the 2nd NY Mounted Rifles in the Union Army. During the battle of Petersburg, VA, on June 17, 1864, he was shot in the left knee. The leg was amputated but complications set in and he died on July 6th, just 6 short months after he enlisted. He was interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Section 13, Grave 5471 on July 8th, 1864. I've attached a couple of photos of his gravesite. This was an older portion of the cemetery and was beautiful on this clear and cool Washington DC day. It was very peaceful and a horse drawn caisson was waiting nearby for another funeral. Thanks to those who in the past have helped me locate this information! Still looking for information on Elijah Kemp!!! I have him in both Wyoming and Greene Counties in the 1830s and 1840s, but that is as far back as I can go on the Kemp side. Happy New Year! Warmest, David =========================== LCDR David S.
