YES! They are my lot! I think we are maybe 2 generations back from Jean REID. I have a cousin in Scotland who does the legwork! I retyped the Lumphanan several times, debating e or a! I think it's brilliant that another set came out here as well. My uncle went to South Africa, so my dad, as the much younger brother, wanted to go somewhere different. He had decided that he couldn't stand the cold (mechanic - working under truck on ice .. you get the picture) so Canada was out of the question. He and a couple of mates thought they would come to Australia on the cheap, spend their few years, and go back. But they all met girls, and the rest is us! My home e-mail is teresak@bigpond.com I have stuff I can sent you, but most of it will require scanning first. I have attached some photos. William young KEMP is my grandfather and David KEMP in the airforce uniform is my dad with his younger sister and brother. The David and Elizabeth picture is a gguncle, I think. I think the spelling is Lumphanan - that's how it's spelt on ScotlandsPeople. My understanding is that the surname Kemp came from a word meaning a warrior/champion/soldier etc - there are plenty of websites with name histories. I've also found the same family being named Kemp & Kempt on different records so I think it may have just been how the person writing down the name spelt it. I know I entered Mill of Craigievar, Leochel-Cushnie as an 'address' on the compilation I am doing - is this your lot? I think it goes back to Peter Kemp & Jean Reid. If they are yours have you been able to connect Peter to any of his ancestors? Although many of them were in agriculture, the family also had a spinning mill in Inverness where we made ropes and later blankets. The rope making declined with the rise of steam and the shift to the Clyde. The mill was last run by Peter KEMP I believe, and closed down in the 1950s. We were/are an Aberdeen family, Lumphanen (the spelling never looks right!) Mill of Craigvar, Crathie. Many were christened at St Nicholas' Church. These days, we're all over the place, South Africa, Australia, and some are back in the old Country, living in Edinburgh and London. The tree is populated with an overwhelming number of people called David, William, George, Elizabeth, Alexander, Jean and James. Some earlier KEMPS had the spelling KEMPT. I have often wondered whether this wasn't a reference to tightly spun rope or yarn, as in the opposite of "unkempt". The Kemps in general were pretty mobile as they worked as ag labs to a large extent so linking the different families is proving to be a battle. The other issue that makes things difficult is that the same names are used in the main & so separating out the correct person can be impossible. There are some forenames, however, that are much rarer in the records e.g. Colin. I am happy to do some limited lookups but in return I would appreciate any well-sourced information that other researchers have found which may mean I can make some links. When I feel it is worthwhile I will then put it on the web for the use of others - if I live that long!!!!
