MA. He married Maria Williams TRUEBODY, 27 April 1823 in Gloucester, Essex Co. MA. He died 1831, in Salem. Issue (surname KEMP): i. Mary Elizabeth, born 28 April 1825 in Salem. She married Nathaniel FRIEND, 27 November 1845 in Gloucester and died 04 June 1903 in Gloucester. ii. Ann Maria, born 25 April 1828 in Gloucester. She married Andrew LEIGHTON, 27 July 1846 in Gloucester and died 02 June 1856 in Gloucester. iii. Frances Elmira, born 02 October 1829 in Salem. She married John William ROOME, 07 January 1849 in Boston, Suffolk Co. MA and died 18 April 1897 in Everett, Middlesex Co. MA John is enumerated as a head of household, living in Salem, in the 1830 Census as follows: Census Enumeration - Identity - Birth range John KEMP - John KEMP - Born 1801-1810 female - Maria (TRUEBODY) KEMP - Born 1801-1810 female - UNKNOWN - Born 1816-1820 female - Mary E. KEMP - Born 1821-1825 female - Ann M. KEMP - Born 1826-1830 female - Frances E. KEMP - Born 1826-1830 The additional female, born between 1816-1820, is unknown. If the age is correct, she would be too old to be a daughter of the marriage, and she seems a bit young to be a domestic. She may be a younger sister of either John or Maria. John's middle name, of LEACH, gives rise to a hypothesis that his mother (or another female relative) may be a LEACH, a large family living in Salem. The Salem vital records disclose no marriages between a LEACH and a KEMP, however, one interesting entry is found, that of the baptism of John Lusky LEACH, son of Elizabeth, baptized 16 January 1803 at 2 years old. Could this John be my John, the illegitimate, but acknowledged, son of Samuel KEMP (in whose 1820 household there is an unidentified male about the right age to be John) and this Elizabeth LEACH? Further evidence may be the additional female in John's 1830 household could be Samuel's daughter, Abby: Abby KEMP, born 21 October 1815 in Salem, daughter of Samuel and Lucy (SLUMAN) KEMP. She filed her intention to marry Zebulon DAVISON, 17 June 1838 in Gloucester, Essex Co. MA, they were married shortly thereafter. She died 26 September 1893 in Chelsea, Suffolk Co. MA. Samuel KEMP and his wife Lucy (SLUMAN) KEMP were both dead by 1830, and the link to Gloucester is interesting, as John's family (including Abby, perhaps?) moved to Gloucester after his death. I can find neither John or Samuel in the published "KEMPs of New England" Anyone have any thoughts or additional information?
