I looked up Sanford ARMSTRONG on the 1880 Census and saw that Hannah said both of her parents were born in New Hampshire which reinforces my suspicion/hope. I have been chasing a William Clark KEMP (b. abt 1817 NY). On the 1880 Census he was residing in Licking Co., OH and he said both of his parents were b. in NH. Part of the 1880 enumeration included Wm C's sister Unice Powers. My research shows her to be the widow of Isaac POWERS (b. 4 Oct 1804 Hollis, Hillsboro, NH). Unice, or sometimes Eunice, was b. abt 1801. Two census records say she was b. NY and two say b. NH. Unice and Isaac were in Licking Co. by 1840. I found an Isaac POWERS in the appropriate age bracket with wife in the right age bracket in Washington Co., NY in 1830. Could be them. My first record for William Clark KEMP is his marriage to Martha Ann WOOLLEY/?WOOLLRY? in 1847 in Miami Co., OH. The 1850 Census has two KEMP men residing in Miami Co., OH who were born in NH, Ralph b. abt 1798 and Levi b. abt 1793. Both of these men are too young to be the father of Unice b. abt 1801. Ralph's children were b. PA and Levi's children were b. NH. I found some trees on Rootsweb's WorldConnect that say both Ralph and Levi were b. in Hollis, NH, sons on Thomas & Hannah (HOBART) KEMP who married 2 Dec 1788 in Hollis. The Kemp Family Association has information on-line that Thomas & Hannah had sons Ralph and Levi but does not show further information, though they may have it and limited their on-line postings. They also have Thomas KEMP with a previous wife, Mehitable LOVEJOY, and 8 children. The one I find most interesting is the son Thomas b. 1775. Okay, this gets even better. Your Sanford ARMSTRONG and Louisa KEMP were in Miami Co., Ohio in 1850! Hmmmm. Are you sure Hannah was Louisa's sister? It looks like she could be the daughter of Levi. So, of course her parents were b. NH, which sets some of my logic back a bit. William Clark KEMP and Martha Ann WOOLLEY/?WOOLLRY? moved around a lot. They were in La Porte Co., IN in 1850, Daviess Co., MO in 1860 and Howard Co., IN in 1870. The children I have found on the census records were Thomas J. b. 1847 (Miami Co. according to his obit) OH, John William b. abt 1850 IN, Charles A. b. abt. 1853 IN, and Ella P. b. abt. 1855 IN. I have been looking at the KEMPs in the 1820 Census records in New York. The best possibility appears to be the Thomas KEMP residing in Hoosick, Rensselaer Co. He has 2 males "to 10 yrs of age" where William Clark would fall, Thomas is "45 & up" (the above Thomas b. 1775 would be 45 yrs. old), 1 female "to 10" where your Louisa would be, 2 females "10-16", 2 females "16-26" where Unice would be, and 1 female "26-45" who would probably be his wife. This obviously needs more work and searhes for primary evidence, but it looks like the puzzle pieces may be falling into place. Looking forward to your comments and input.
