Greetings Kemp Researchers, I am new to the KEMP-L mailing list on RootsWeb.com and am seeking more information and ancestry on my great-great-great grandmother, Sophia Kemp, b. 1796 in England. She married Robert Cooke, Sr. (b. 1789, Normandy, France; d. July 3, 1843 near Caledonia, Ontario, Canada) on Sept. 23, 1815 in Dallington, Sussex County, England; they had a large family of 14 children, including my great-great grandfather, John Cook (b. May 2, 1831, Dallington, Sussex, England; d. Apr. 7, 1909, Kalamazoo, MI; md. Nov. 22, 1865 at Middleville, MI to Lucinda E. Van Every Mitchell (1842-1905)). Some of Sophia's elder daughters went to Australia, but most of the rest of the children came with her to America in 1843, including John, George, Lucy md. Talbott, and Joseph (1837-1863, killed during the Civil War) who all settled in Thornapple Township, Barry County, Michigan. Son Charles Cook (1824-1898) was in the British Royal Navy before he and his family joined his siblings in Michigan in 1855. Sophia died Sept. 8, 1847 in Rochester, Monroe Co., NY. I do not know the names of Sophia's parents or where in England she was born. If anyone could help me answer these unknowns about Sophia, it would be greatly appreciated. I would also be glad to hear from this Cook family descendants and researchers, and the descendants of Andrew D. and Nancy Lucellas (Van Sellas) Van Every, including any additional information known about these families. Thank you for your help. Sincerely yours,Gary Finkbeiner _________________________________________________________________ Get ideas on sharing photos from people like you. Hello Gary Have you found the family on the 1841 census yet? That might give some clues to Sophia's background. Was Sophia's husband in the army or navy? My earliest known Kemp, is James who was born in Shoreditch, London (Middlesex) circa 1793.
