First is the Right Reverend James, bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Maryland - the one who came to the Eastern Shore from Scotland as a pastor for a small church there, and eventually became an Episcopalian, then rose through the ranks to become the first Bishop of Baltimore. He died when a stagecoach bringing him back from a meeting in New York overturned and injured him so seveerly that he died. Next was John R. Kemp, who lived at the Black Horse inn. There is no John R. listed as family with the family of Jane Frith Kemp. Last is Mrs. Mary Kemp, who is probably no kin to the Kemps in Jane Frith Kemp's family. Next is Simon Kemp, who is listed as a brass founder, Richard Sampson (1794-1889), Simon (1799-1865), Thomas (1805-1870) and John Frith Kemp (1807-1870-80) were the only 4 sons living in Baltimore. In the 1829 Directory, there were 5 Kemps listed. There is Simon the brass founder still living in his home, and others who could not be kin to him: Mrs. A. (milk seller), E.D. (attorney at law), Isaac (no profession listed), and H. Kemp, laborer. There is a Mrs. Margaret Harris, tailoress, living in Tripolet's Alley. Thomas was listed in the 1830 Directory, which lists Thomas as a teacher. Thomas was on the 1830 census along with his wife and the two daughters born to them. In the 1837 City Directory pages, Simon has gone up in the world and is now Justice of the Peace. There is a Thomas Kemp, carpenter, listed, but no more identification. I don't think that is the Thomas who was a school teacher on the 1830 Directory. A Richard Kemp is there, a grocer, who first appeared on the 1830 Directory - he may be the older brother of Richard Samson. We may be on the right track to find Thomas Kemp - or not. But hopefully some of these names may help others out that are looking for a particular Kemp in Baltimore during that time period.
