Author: motherjudy Surnames: KEMP, WATKINS, HUGHES Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.kemp/1881/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Shamokin Boro, Northumberland Co., PA Interested in hearing from anyone related to or who has any info on William and Rhoda KEMP who came from ENG to Shamokin Twp., Northumberland Co., PA. Also on William, b. <1845> ENG or PA, and married JEmima KEMP. Also his brother John and possible siblings. I am totally confused because I don't know if the children with William and Rhoda in 1870 are theirs or those of a son or brother of William's. Why I say this is the fact that Francis and Emma, b. PA, are listed with John and Rosetta KEMP in Minersville, Schuylkill Co., PA on the 1860 US CENSUS. Also, William, age 15 PA, and John, age 16, PA, are listed as though sons. So is this William the William who married Gemima (Jemima) and live in the same dwelling as William and Rhoda KEMP on the 1870 US CENSUS in Shamokin, Northumberland Co., PA? The ages are Wm., John, Francis, and Emma all fit. The only thing is place of birth is different, but I don't always rely on that. I see too many mistakes on this KEMP family so far on later censuses. 1870 Census says son Francis born abt. 1857-PA, which is correct. Then that John and William were born in England. 1860 US CENSUS: Minersville Boro, Schuylkill Co., PA John KEMP -29 ENG; Rosetta - 28 ENG; John -16 PA; William -15 PA; Ann - 12 PA; Francis - 3 PA; Emma abt. 6 mos PA. *Possibly this John age 29, was killed in the Civil War? I don't see him in the area in 1870. 1870 US CENSUS: John KEMP - age 26 ENG - Hazle Twp., Luzerne PA & Harriet, and son William. James H. KEMP - age 26 ENG - Plymouth Twp., Luzerne Co., PA and Anne. -------------------------------------------- Shamokin Twp., Northumberland Co., PA Dwelling #636/ Family #688 - William KEMP - 26 ENG -works in mine *(may be William listed on the 1860 Census listed above) Gemima (this is Jemima WATKINS) - 25 PA Dwelling #636/ Family #689 William KEMP - 48 ENG - Works in mine Rhoda -47 ENG John - 27 -Works in mines *(may actually be the John on the census listed above in 1860) *These are the children in question as to whose they are Francis -13 PA (was on the 1860 Census listed above) Emma - 11 PA (was on the 1860 Census listed above) James H. 10 PA Martha -5 PA -------------------------------------- 1880 US CENSUS - Francis KEMP - 21 PA - Mt. Carmel Boro, Northumberland Co., PA. Says parents were Prussia and ENG. This could be wrong though. He is married and has a daughter. Coal, 1st WD, Shamokin Boro, Northumberland Co., PA Rhoda KEMP - 54 ENG- has a check for widowed. - head Martha -14 PA -daughter James H. - 12 PA - son Coal, 2nd WD, Shamokin Boro, Northumberland Co., PA Jemima KEMP - 34 -PA -says she is married, not a widow. *Mistake on the birthplace of her parents. Says ENG ENG. THis should be Wales and Wales. John H. - age 10 PA. *Here again, a mistake on the birth of parents. Says PA, ENG That is backwards. Martha W. -age 4 PA. Parents: PA, ENG. That is backwards. Roda (Rhoda) W. - age 2 PA. Parents wrong again. ------------------------------------------- 1900 US CENSUS Shamokin Boro, Northumberland Co., PA Jemima KEMP - OCT 1846- PA widow *says parents PA, Wales. Martha- daughter- June 1875 - Single - *says parents PA, PA (wrong) Emma- daughter- June 1885 - Single - *says parents PA, PA (wrong) Alfred W.-nephew -Oct 1894 PA - Parents PA, PA Maude - nephew *wrong -Oct 1896 PA - Parents : PA, PA *on next census it says she is daughter. ------------------------------------------------------ 1910 US Census: 3 WD, Shamokin Boro, Northumberland Co., PA Jemima KEMP - 65 PA - widow Emma - daughter - 23 -single Alfred - son *last census he was her nephew) - age 17 Maude - daughter * last census she was called her nephew which was meant to be niece. So did she adopt them? Her husband was dead before these children were born, so they weren't her children with him. I don't know whose children Alfred and Maude were. NExt census Maude is Maude Hughes. -------------------------------------------- 1920 US Census: 1 WD, Shamokin, Northumberland Co., PA Alfred KEMP - and wife Ruth. CHildren:Alfred R., Jr., and Elizabeth. 4 WD, Shamokin, Northumberland Co., PA Emma KEMP - 34 PA - single - says parents PA & Wales (wrong) Maude Hughes - 24 - * says niece (not sister). Parents: PA Now I happen to know that Jemima's sister Hannah married David Hughes, they moved to Schenectady, NY between 1880 - 1900. They had two sons who would have been old enough to have children in the 1890's. Were they one of her sister's grandchildren? I will have to find out. It says they were Jemima's niece. *Jemima's husband William was in the military - Civil War. 1.) Civil War - Sargeant- Northumberland Infantry, 172 Penn. Inf., Co. D 2.) "US Soldier - Added Aug 13, 1890 - Wm. Kemp - Jemima KEMP - Widow - West Coal Twp., Northumberland Co., PA" Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
