He was the son of William Simpson and Anna Marie (Amelia) Kemp who were married in Montreal, Canada in 1851. Witnesses: George Kemp, John Simpson. William was b Scotland abt 1815, d 1875 in Montreal. Amelia was b abt 1829 in England, d 1878 Montreal. There were 14 years after William and Anna Marie were married for them to have other children before they had Henry. And maybe they had children after Henry was born. I'm looking for any of them and their progeny. Henry Gordon was orphaned at 13 and no doubt went to live with other family members (maybe Robert & Elizabeth Simpson, Upham, Kings, New Brunswick???) Also looking for information on William and Anna Marie prior to their marriage. Thanks! Paula

Parents are named as James and Mary KEMP but do not seem to have resided in the parish either before or after this event. Thank you in advance if you can help.
My Greatgrandfather, Charles Nicholas Kemp was born in Seneca County Ohio near Tiffin. His parents names are listed on his death certificate as John and Susan (Knecht) Kemp. He married Margaret Melinda Spawr November 19, 1868 at Lexington, Illinois. They had 6 children; Harry Grant, Etta Mae, Charles Herbert, Mary Belle, Frank Johnathan, and Margaret Ethel. The family lived in Nebraska for a few years and some of their children remained in Nebraska. After the death of Margaret Melinda died in 1921 in St. Edwards, Nebraska, Charles eventually returned to Illinois and lived with his son Frank until his death in 1938. There has been some question about his parents names. I have information that his Mother's name was Susan Knecht, Susan Souder, Susanne Souder and Susanna Souder. Any information would be greatly appreciated in solving this puzzle. I will be glad to share any information I have on the Kemp family. Thank you. Sandy Carter
Hi, David: Sorry to say, I don't find an Ira or Elijah Kemp among the Albany-area John Wolf Kemp descendants in my records. That information is far from complete, however, so I'll keep my eyes peeled for Elijah and Ira as I learn more. Best wishes for good hunting in the meantime, Steve

Steve, I would sincerely appreciate that and look forward to your response. I will forward the last couple of census listings that I have to see if it helps make a connection. Maybe I can help a little: I just talked to my mother who said her mom (Maggie would be her mom's aunt) told her many years ago that the COOK's in Zion, IL (Lake County) were related to her (as were EVANS in Zion). Zion, is just north of the town I live in, however, after going through a phone book (dated about 5 yrs ago), I found over 40 COOK names. If you have family first names that seem to repeat, let me know, and I'll see if they appear in Zion. More now, than ever, I'm sure the Maggie COOK you found is mom's mother's sister. Barbara

Hi David: My Kemps started with gr-gr-gr- grandfather Johan Wulf Kaempff, who located near Albany in the 1750-60s. He and the next two generations were at various times in Rensselaer, Albany, Schoharie, Schenectady and Fulton counties. In the early 1800s one an- cestor married into the Flower(s) family of Greene County, so there was a con- nection to that area. My records are rather spotty: the Kemps seem to have moved around a fair amount, and didn't have a strong denominational affiliation, so christening and marriage rec- ords are hit-and-miss. I'll check what I have, however, to see if there's mention of an Elijah in my great-grandfather's generation (b. 1828). Worth a shot, though there are quite a few unrelated Kemps (of English ancestry) in the same area. Will let you know in the next few days. Best regards, Steve Hicks

All, I took advantage of the national day of mourning earlier this week by visiting one of my ancestors in Arlington National Cemetery, Ira Kemp. Ira Kemp was born on approx. 18 August 1843 and died on approximately 06 July 1864. He was the oldest child of Elijah Kemp and Anna Wheeler. For reference, Elijah and Anna's fifth child, Judson Arthur Kemp, is my generation's great-great-grandfather (Elijah, Judson Arthur, Ira Judson, Harold James, the four Kemp boys). So, I believe this makes Ira my great-great-great-uncle, or something like that. Anyway, Ira fought in the Civil War where he was a private in Company L of the 2nd NY Mounted Rifles in the Union Army. During the battle of Petersburg, VA, on June 17, 1864, he was shot in the left knee. The leg was amputated but complications set in and he died on July 6th, just 6 short months after he enlisted. He was interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Section 13, Grave 5471 on July 8th, 1864. I've attached a couple of photos of his gravesite. This was an older portion of the cemetery and was beautiful on this clear and cool Washington DC day. It was very peaceful and a horse drawn caisson was waiting nearby for another funeral. Thanks to those who in the past have helped me locate this information! Still looking for information on Elijah Kemp!!! I have him in both Wyoming and Greene Counties in the 1830s and 1840s, but that is as far back as I can go on the Kemp side. Happy New Year! Warmest, David =========================== LCDR David S. Joseph was the son of Lydia McElwain (sister of Frances' mother-Elizabeth McElwain Orr)& David Russell. I went to high school in Columbia, TN and worked at Maury Co. Hospital for 18 years in the operating room. I moved to FL in 1984. The information my aunt had says that John & Alexander Orr went to Maury Co. and were cabinet makers. I find a Joseph Orr b KY there also. Is this their brother? He's married to Mary Alderson and is listed as a merchant on the census. I haven't been able to find John Orr after 1880 census. Do you know where he is buried? Do you have any information on his children? His first wife died in child birth and the child was raised by his wife's family. He then remarried and had 2 sons. He and this wife divorced and I haven't been able to track down these children. My email may have been full. I've had company and haven't checked it in a few days. Perhaps you could try it again or give me your address. I'm so glad to find someone with some of the answers to my questions on this line.

I have quite a bit on the Orr family, and some on the McElwain family - there are some Orrs still living in Mt. Pleasant,TN and I occasionally correspond with one of them. I was born and raised in Columbia, TN, which is about 15 miles from Mt. Pleasant. My ancestry gets a bit convoluted as Thomas Kemp is my double great great grandfather. He was the father of my great grandmother, Jane Kemp Perry, and also the father of my great grandfather, William Thompson Kemp. Jane was the product of his first wife, Jane was born in Baltimore and lost her mother at the birth of her sister, two years later. Thomas moved to the Nashville area, met and married Frances Orr, lost her (to cholera?) when their son, Wm. T. Kemp was a small child. Years later, the son of Jane Kemp Perry (William Kemp Perry) went to Texas to visit his mother's half brother, met his cousin, Frances Loretta Kemp, and married her. They had different grandmothers but the same grandfather, which wasn't considered odd back in those days and in the South as cousins tended to marry cousins. Most of the Kemp family is buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Columbia, Tennessee. I have information on the Texas branch - William T. Kemp's son, Joseph Kemp, became quite wealthy - if you go online and just put in his name, it will bring up a good deal of information about him and his partner, Frank Kell. Joseph Kemp was my grandmother's brother. Glad I could be of some help in your research of the McElwain's. Offhand I can't remember but I have another McElwain in my family on the Texas side - I have little or no information on her other than the name - and don't know if she was related to the Logan County McElwain's at all - I doubt it. Marye Ann Perry Thompson Oh, incidentally, the Jos. Russell (attorney you mentioned) is a distant cousin of mine as well - I believe he married into either the McElwain or the Orr family.
