Author: k_courts Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.kemp/1770.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Patrick, Last night I was on the internet until two am researching the Kemp family, and I found some more information that may help you locate my Kemp family. I know that I am descended from Daniel L. Kemp, who was born in 1801 in Virginia, at this time county unknown, and I know that my DAniel Kemp worked as a wagonmaker, and my Daniel L. Kemp was married on the date of August 29, 1825 to Letticia Roach in Fauquier County, Virginia, these are the children that I found besides my great great grandmother, my g g grandmother, Sarah Letticia Kemp, born January 1, 1834 in Virginia, but she could have been born in Ohio, then I found that Mary Viriginia Kemp, born in the year of 1836 in Muskingum County, Ohio and Mary was married to Abram Samuels, then there was Daniel L. Kemp and Thomas B. Kemp, and both, Thomas and Daniel L. Kemp, fought in the Civil War from Jackson County, Virginia. Now, more to help you find if I am the missing link, I have found in my grandmother's papers a reference made that said the Fitzhugh - Kemp family that moved to Louisiana. One time when I was in high school and had to write a paper on the Civil War for American history in talking about President Lincoln, my grandmother told me that "that she did not like Prsident Lincoln as he had made all her family in Virginia go to war." NOw in thinking about it, they must have lost all their property and everything and the Fitzhugh brothers came to Louisiana for a new start. I will go over to St. Martinville and New IBeria and round up all the legal information on my Fitzhugh Kemp land ownership etc. for you. I can tell you that there are only three descendants of both, GEorge Nicholas and his brother, Theodrick Bland Fitzhugh, and they are Virginia Murray Rolston, who is deceased, Sallie Beth Koeing, who is living in Denton, Texas, and Me, Kitty Courts. Virginia Murray Rolston had two daughters, Virginia, who was called Ginger, and she is about 50 yeras old, and Kathy Rolston, who is an attorney in Houston, Texas, and I know that Kathy Rolston from her first marriage to Mr. Crump in Baton Rouge, La. had two sons, John and Ben Crump and those two boys may be still living in Baton Rouge. I know that her younger daughter, Virginia, "Ginger" Rolston, was first married to Keith Hodgeson, and then she is remarried but I do not know the name of the name but I know that they are living in Gonzales, La. GEorge Nicholas FItzhugh married Sarah Lettica KEmp and after the close of the Civil War, they moved to Louisiana, first to St. Martinville, La. and then on to New IBeria, La. where George N. and his brother, Theodrick Bland, Fitzhugh lived across the street from each other. Geoprge Nicholas Fitzhugh and Sarah Letticia Kemp Fitzhugh had one daughter, Katherine, who was called Kate, and she was born on December 1, 1853 in Ravenswood, Virginia and Kate Fitzhugh was married to Joseph Pearce Russell, a ntaive of LIverpool, England, in the year of 1877 at New Iberia, La. and they had two children, Fanny Fitzhugh Russell who was born in 1878 and died as an infant, then years later they had my grandmother, Heneritta Sarah Russell, who was born on the date of October 21, 1891, she was married on the date of November 26, 1913/14 to Dr Frank Field Courts, and she died on March 9, 1993 at New Iberia, La. and she is buried in Rosehill Cemetery in New IBeria, La. and Heneritte Russell Courts had two children, Katherine Sarah Courts, born March 13, 1915, married to Clarenc D. Ferrero on September 4, 1937, and died July 13, 1974, and Frank Russell Courts, born September 16, 1919, married January 21, 1950 Ruby G. Deslatte, and Frank Russell Courts has one daughter, Katherine Ruby Courts, and I have two daughters, Jacqueline Christine Johnson, born March 29, 1979, married August 12, 2006 Thomas A. Marsh, and Jennifer Lynn Johson, born June 1, 1982. I will send you the Theodrick Bland Fitzhugh line in Louisiana after I go dig it out of the file. Hope this helps you connect your missing links I am so glad to have found someone to work with on these lines. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: k_courts Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.kemp/1770.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am a direct descendant of William Fitzhugh, the immigrant, who was married to Sarah Tucker. So we are probably related distinctly. I know that my Fitzhugh family lived in Fenton, Fauquier County, Va. and then resettled in RavensWoods, West Virginia. I remember my grandmothr telling me that the plantation we live on here between the towns of New Iberia and Jeanerette, was named Ravenswoods Plantation after the Fitzhugh plantation in West Virginia and the Fitzhugh home in England. I have seen the surname of Diggs connected with the Fitzhugh family, but I have never pursued it. Ironically, here in New Iberia, La., many, many years ago in the early 1900's there was an Episcopalian minister, Rev. Robert Diggs, who lived here in New IBeria, La. and he had four daughters, Katherine, Edie, Elizabeth, and Roberta Diggs, and my family was very close friends with all the Diggs girls and their husbands, and it is a coincidence that we could have been related and never knew it until e! veryone is gone. Also, last summer I read and made copies of the book entitled, William Fitzhugh and his Chespeake World. I am so glad to have found someone to work with me on this endeavor. I have a lot of genealogy on the Fitzhugh family, but very little on the Kemp family. Several years ago, I started doing research on the Kemp family, and someone wrote to me telling me that my Kemp family was probably from Ohio. (At that time, I didn't pursue due to the fact that I was raising two young children, and working on graduate degrees) I do know that George Nicholas Fitzhugh was born ion the date of October 29, 1813 to Henry Fitzhugh and Heneritte Fitzhugh, (two Fitzhugh intermarried) and his brother, Theodrick Bland Fitzhugh, was born on the date of March 1, 1818 in Fauquier County, Va, George Nicholas Fitzhugh was married on the date of February 1, 1849 to Sarah Lettia Kemp, who was (I think from what I found on the internet and a mention of a Daniel Kemp in my grandmother's old papers) was Daniel L. Kemp and his wife, Letticia Roach, and she was born on the date of January 1, 1834 in Fauquier or Jackson County, Va. George Nicholas Fitzhugh and Sarah Letticia Kemp had one daughter, who was named, Katherine Fitzhugh, and she was born on the date of December 1, 1853 in RavensWood, Va. I know that my Fitzhugh family had moved to Ravenswood, West Virginia. NOw, from my research I have concluded that George Nicholas Fitzhugh and his wife, Sarah Leticia Kemp, along with the other Fitzhugh family members must! have removed from Fauquier County, Va. to Ravenswood, West Virginia. After the close of the Civil War, both, George Nicholas and his brother, Theodrick Bland, Fitzhugh removed to Louisiana thinking they could live cheaper the farther South they went without their slaves, they were on a boat head to Ala. when some man told them to go to Louisiana cause you could pick your dollar bills off of the sugar cane leaves, so to Louisiana they came. They first settled in St. Martinville, Louisiana on a portion of the Charles Durand plantation and then eventually removed to New Iberia, Louisiana where they lived across the street on East Main Street from each other. Also, I remember my Grandmother Heneritte telling me how Grandmother Letticia Kemp Fitzhugh dug up her orange lilies and replanted them in her yard on Main Street. Removing to Louisiana were George Nicholas Fitzhugh and his wife, Sarah Letticia Kemp, and their daughter, Kate, and Theodrick Bland Fitzhugh, and his wife, Susan, and their children, who were Mary Diggs Fitzhugh, who was born on February 16, 154 in Ravenwood, West Virginia, Theda Bland Fitzhugh, who was born on August 4, 1861 in Ravenswood, West Virginia. Glad to have made your contact and happy to be working with you and looking forwad to getting to know you and your family, I deeply appreciate your assistance, thank you very, very much. kitty courts PS My private email address is MsNovelist@hotmail.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have both the KEMP surname and FITZHUGH's of Ravenworth's in my gedcom. I also have the DIGGE's family line (who married into both the Fitzhugh's and Kemp's). My KEMP's came from both Massachetts and Virginia and I have come across hints that they eventually migrated to Lousianna and North and South Carolina. If we can find the link between your lines and what I have, we may be able to prove that the southern KEMP's ARE related to those from the Northeast and before that England (which I have covered back to 1200's). Your family line could be the missing link I have been searching for! I have many KEMP's who migrated to Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Utah, California, Arizona, South Dakota and Texas. Do you have ANY hints as to where your George Nicholas FITZHUGH was born? You also mention the SAMUEL's any help there on where they came from? Sometimes tracing back another interconnecting family line can help break down those walls we all encounter. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. We have a test kit on the way to an Australian Kemp and an English Kemp is sending for his right away. We hope to soon have a Maryland Kemp and a Texas Kemp enrolled. The more Kemps we can test, the better the chances that we will all have success. Since this project is already ongoing, we qualify for a group rate. You can purchase a kit for yourself or for someone else (if cost might be an issue for them). You only need one volunteer from each known family line. If you don't know if you are related to other Kemps in a geographic area, you can try to get that branch to find a volunteer also. You can belong to two surname and one geographic project - with the same test. Good Luck! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Great grandmother Maria Christiana Kemp was born in Hoxton, Shoreditch in 1840, the youngest of the seven children of James Kemp and Sarah Susanna Martin. James Kemp, a house painter and glazier, was born in Shoreditch in 1793, and married Sarah Susanna Martin at St Giles, Cripplegate, in 1833. Sarah Susanna was born 1814, bpt St Leonards, Shoreditch, the daughter of Mintam Martin and probably Sarah Osborne. Mintam's parents were possibly Mintam Martin and Susanna Mary Connell. These couples were married at St Giles, Cripplegate in 1803, and 1779 respectively. Sarah Susanna Martin and James Kemp's known children are: Louisa Frances b 1833 married a Berry Sarah Ann b 1836 Mary Ann b 1838 James Frederick b 1840 Joshua George b 1843 Henry Edward b 1845 Maria Christiana b 1850 Maria Christiana married Thomas Greenwood in 1874. She was living in Stepeny. The Greenwoods lived in Bethnal Green and the Mile End Road area before moving out to Edmonton/Enfield in 1880. The men appear to be associated with Billingsgate fish market. Joshua Kemp I found in 1901 in Leyton, living with a Martin aunt, without either wife or children. He was a muffin and crumpet baker and lived with his family in Newington after his marriage. James the son has the middle name Frederick, but I do not have his marriage or descendants. Louisa's marriage I have not found, but she her child are with her mother in Bethnal Green in 1861. Her married name was Berry. Sarah Susanna was widowed and married Henry Robertson at Christ Church, Hoxton, Shoreditch, in 1856. Their son George was born in Shoreditch in 1857. On the 1861 census Maria Christiana Kemp appears erroneously as a Robertson. Hope you can get back another generation and we can make a connection. Cork, Ireland would like to have DNA testing done to determine if several families are related - one came to Baltimore, Maryland in 1819; one went to Jamaica, West Indies, New South Wales and Australia; one went to Ontario, Canada; one went to England; and we don't know where the others went! How do we go about this? How much does it cost? Who determines the results, etc.? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have discovered,by accident, that in 1821,Elizabeth gave birth to Lydia,in Bath, this makes them 15.Lydia isnt on the 1841 census of Bath. However there is a Lydia Kemp who arrived at Port Phillip Australia in 1840,followed by Richard and Elizabeth Kemp and family,on the Andromache in 1848,namely Fanny Harriet,Louisa Agnes,William Richard,James,Mary Ann,Harriet Lucy,Elizabeth, and Robert William. If you know of this tree, can you please tell me if James is in fact James Haywood Kemp born Bristol 1830/31,and any details of origins of this tree.Thank you regards John.
