There is an E Kemp listed who is a female. Also Nelly is a nickname for Eleanor and Ellen. There is no "color" marked. 1860 United States Federal Census Name: E Kemp Age in 1860: 32 Birth Year: abt 1828 Birthplace: Alabama Home in 1860: Fort Bend, Texas Gender: Female Post Office: Richmond Household Members: Name Age E Kemp 32 F Alabama C Kemp 8 F Texas T Kemp 4 F Texas The only other Kemp in Ft Bend was a C H Kemp, born in MD in 1809. There are 3 Kemp families in Milam, TX in 1860 but I don't know how close that is to Brazos. Do you get the Family Tree magazine? If not they mention a search engine which might be helpful: www.afrigeneas.com -- it's free. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The last 3 children were born in TX before 1860, so you'd think that they would be in the 1860 TX census but I haven't found them yet. There is an E F Kemp (slave owner) in Fort Bend, TX in the 1860 slave schedule census. Take a look at http://www.afrigeneas.com/library/slave_schedule2.html and see if it is of any help to you. It's definitely a puzzle. There's always DNA testing, if you want to go that route. But I will keep looking, I like puzzles. My Kemps are from upstate NY.
