I haven't posted my KEMP query for a while, and thought I'd try again: I'm researching James W. KEMP born 1822 in Ohio; died September 11, 1885 in Alton, Madison, Illinois. He married Rachel HEATH on March 25, 1840 in Hamilton, Ohio. They had a daughter Marie Alice KEMP born August 23, 1850 in Alton, Illinois. On July 30, 1867 she married Augustus Frederick Charles GREDING in Alton, Illinois. Any help on this KEMP family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Nicole Smith [email protected]
Gordon, Welcome to the Kemp Newsgroup. I am the "resident expert" on the Kemp's of New England, with over 12,000 descendents of Samuel Kemp on file. In your posting, you have Samuel as being born circa 1637 in Billerica, Mass. You also show Edward Kemp as his father. My research has developed the following probable ancestral line for Samuel: Two Kemp's, probably brothers, came to the Mass. Bay Colony in 1637/8, settling in Dedham, Mass. They were Robert Kemp (and wife), and Edward and Ann (___) Kemp, along with their daughter, Esther. In early 1639, both Kemp men were admitted to the church in Dedham, however, only Edward was to attain Freeman status. Nothing further is known or documented about Robert. Edward was administered the Freeman oath, probably in Boston, in the spring of 1638. He was first recorded as being in Dedham on 13 Jul 1638, when a meeting of the Freemen in Dedham agreed to his terms to become the town blacksmith. It is highly likely that Robert Kemp was the father of Samuel Kemp, and that Samuel was probably born 1639 or 1640 in Dedham. It is also probable that on the death of his parents ( presumed because there is no further record of Robert or his wife), he became a ward of Edward, his uncle. In the spring of 1652, Edward removed to Wenham, Mass, along with his daughter and her husband, Samuel and Esther (Kemp) Foster. In November 1655, they again removed from town, this time to Chelmsford, Mass. On 17 May 1658, a petition for permission to trade with the Indians was presented to the Court in Boston, signed by Edward Kemp, Samuel Foster, AND Samuel Kemp. However, Samuel did not remain in Chelmsford for long, as by the end of 1658, he was in possession of a tract of land in Billerica. On 17 Dec 1668, Edward Kemp died, leaving some livestock to Samuel Kemp of Groton, "his kinsman". It is also noted that on 3 Sep 1667, Edward was granted the holding of a tract of land that was originally laid out to Samuel in Chelmsford. The linking of these two families does not end here. As you know, Samuel married in 1662 to Sarah Foster, daughter of Andrew and Ann (____) Foster of Andover (NOT the daughter of Thomas Foster of Billerica, as frequently reported). Sarah Foster's brother, Abraham, married a granddaughter of Samuel and Esther (Kemp) Foster, which now opens a great deal of conjecture about the relationship of the two Foster's. Anyhow, I hope you find this information useful. I'm still attempting to gather sufficient details and facts to put more credibility in these points of interest. I'd be happy to discuss them further with anyone who shares Samuel Kemp as an ancestor. Bob Young, Sec/Treas Kemp Family Association [email protected]

Hello, I'm new to the Kemp list, but have been monitoring your messages for a brief time. I've not seen any references to my line, so I thought I might post a query. My line is as follows: 1. Abigail Kemp, b. 17 Jan 1740 in Groton, MA, married in 1759 to William Brooks in Hollis, NH, died 1786. She was the daughter of: 2. Zerubbabel Kemp, b. 12 Oct 1705 in Groton, married 23 Nov 1737 to Abigail Lawrence in groton, and died 1744 in NH. He was the son of: 3. Zerubbabel Kemp, b. 23 May 1667 in Groton, married 27 Jan 1703/04 to Mary Lacey in Groton, and died 1762 in Groton. He was the son of: 4. Samuel Kemp, b. abt 1637 in Billerica, MA, married 23 May 1662 to Sarah Foster, and died (?). He was the son of: 5. Edward Kemp, b. abt 1611 in England. I would like to hear from anyone researching this line, and I'd be delighted to share my information. Gordon Kirkemo [email protected]
I just discovered a Kempe line. Need help. Sir Dudley Digges (b. abt 1583) of Chilham, Kent, England married a Mary Kempe (dau of Sir Thomas Kempe b abt 1530) I am assuming all of these were from the are of Kent, England because of the time period. I understand Sir Thomas Kempe is the son of Sir Thomas Kempe who is the son of Sir William Kempe who was married to Eleanor Browne. None of this is substantiated at this time. Any information would be appreciated. I am willing to share any information on my Digges line which came from England and settled in York Co., Virginia. Thanks! C. Hicks

Hi Jeanne, I am having modem problems and we cannot figure out what is going on. If I take my computer to my neighbors it will run at top speed. If I bring her computer here it will run at top speed. Both modems are the exact same kind. However, my modem will not go over 12,000 bps for me. We have had the phone company out here, rechecked all the settings and still cannot figure this one out. Usually I am on line at 9,600 bps which is craziness. I am still trying to find my Grandfathers family. I did learn John J. Kemp was born in Dunkerque, France not Alsace Lorraine. Hi Linda!!! Are you still on-line??? Jeanie
To reflect our International membership, I have given our KFA Web Page a new look. Hope it looks o.k. on your computer. At work it looked great! At home the background is faded. Always looking for input/update/ideas to any of the Web areas. Looking forward to seeing many of you at the 3rd Annual KFA Reunion this Fall in Massachusetts or at the 4th Annual KFA Reunion here in Dallas, Texas in 1998. My memory is getting terrible Bob, can not remember if I paid my dues or not. Drop me a note and let me know. Thanks, R. Young
Greetings to all of my Kemp cousins. I'm happy to see the Kemp list back up and running. Kudos to the folk at both the old "rmgate" and at "rootsweb" for resolving the problems quickly. This notice is to all who have sent in dues for 1997. You will have probably noticed that your checks have not yet cleared. I still have them, and I"m slowly going through the "legalese" necessary to open an account for KFA. It requires signatures of all officers on the forms, which means sending forms via US Snail to Indiana and Florida. I hope to get the account set up, and deposits made, within the next 2-4 weeks. In order to keep costs at a minimum, there are no acknowledgements being mailed. If you want to know if I received your check, please send me an eMail. For those who paid for 1996 subscriptions to the Kemp Files, you are due one more issue (for a total of four). It is currently sitting on my hard disk, and is being formatted. The first issue for 1997/8 will be out this summer. As always, I welcome any questions about KFA which you may have. I'm also still actively seeking contact with anyone who traces their lineage back to New England Kemp's prior to 1850. Best wishes, and happy rooting!! I sent in my KFA dues about 2 months ago and the check hasn't cleared the bank yet. Who do I contact to see if it arrived? Bruce Kemp
Do not hit reply button, but rather create new email to Jerome at [email protected] as Web Editor has posted this for our newest KFA member. --------------------------------------------- My name is Jerome Kemp. I was born in Manchester CT in 1957. My father is Alan Kemp, b. Hackenstack NJ in 1930, son of Jerome Kemp, b. ?? in Germany, d. 1944 in Danbury CT and Dorothy Partnoy, b. 1902 in Kishinev, Moldavia, d. 1991 in NY. Jerome Kemp, my grandfather who I never knew, had a brother, William Kemp, who married Dorothy after his brother's death. This is the Eastern European Jewish tradition if a bachelor brother remains. Apparently William and Jerome had a sister, whose name I believe was Pearl, who married into a family from NY named Orange--I've heard that her husband was a concert pianist. I have found traces of a family called Kempenich originally from a town in Germany called Emmernich and now apparently from Anniston Alabama, via the Museum of the Diaspora in Tel Aviv. Have you ever come across and Kemps of Jewish origin? If so, I'd be interested in hearing about them, as our family is tiny. There's a lot of silence and mystery around my father's family which i've been trying to crack for a while now. thanks Jerome Kemp [email protected]
This sounds like it has the making of an interesting story for the "Kemp Files". Does anyone have more information on Hal Kemp?? Bob Young, Secretary Kemp Family Association [email protected]
