    3. If any of this looks familiar please write me! I need to do more research in courthouse records to find more details on the daughters of Elias and Dora. All I know to date: 1) My gggfather Elias Kemp (b 1834 Mar; Maryland [or England?]) married Dora Ingles (b 1839 May; Germany[Na]) on August 7, 1857 in Iron County, MO. I have no idea who his parents or siblings were. In two different census' he is listed as being born in Maryland and the other in England. They moved to Bonham, Fannin County, Texas between 1876--1880. 3. I've been attempting to determine the origins of a fairly large Kemp family in Harpswell, Cumberland County, Maine. Timothy Kemp is found in Harpswell, along with his wife, Hannah Snow, in the mid-1790's. Estimated date of birth for Timothy would be about 1775. Further research has shown that a Silas Kemp was listed as being "driven from Harpswell" by the British in July 1777. It is thought, but not proven, that this Silas Kemp was born 11 Nov 1741 in Groton, Middlesex County, Mass., the son of Hezekiah Kemp. Anyone having information on either Timothy or Silas Kemp, please let me know. I'm always glad to share what I have. This is a major missing link in my quest to document all Kemp's in New England before the 1790 census. Bob Young, Secretary Kemp Family Association [email protected]

    2. Howard Kemp Jr.
    3. Hi everyone, I am a new member to the list and am looking for possible ties to my family from Virginia. Here is my line going backward from my grandfather, most are from Carroll County, but Franklin County fits in too. James Martin Kemp b. 3/3/1892 d. 6/28/1972 m. Bessie Mary Norton WIlliam Shadrach Kemp b. abt 1857 m. Keturah Nicholas James R. Kemp b. abt 1833 m. Elizabeth Jennings William Kemp b. 11/24/1794 m. I believe Catherine Housman. In "Pioneer families of Franklin County" I believe he is listed as a son of Thomas Kemp. However the book lists his brother Walter as married to Catherine Howsman, and William as married to Arilda English. On the marriage license for James R. his parents are listed as William and what looks to be Catherine. If anyone can shed any light on this as to whether I am following my line correctly or have strayed. The license for James R. says he was born in Franklin County, but it is possible I have picked up an incorrect William as his father. Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide to a rookie. Howard E. Kemp, Jr.

That page will be reached from my front page at: http://members.aol.com/ntgen/ In addition, I am adding "Research Sources, Notes, and Questions for each of my names. Under Family Histories. All of my New England names and the Kemp ancestry is under "Mom's Side". There I will put notes and questions about smaller issues that may not necessarily effect lineage, or lingering questions. You can reach that from my home page by Heritage > Family Histories > Mom's Side. I have setup a Kemp section, even though my immigrant only apparently only lived a few years in the Colonies before passing away and having one child. If you have other New England connections, you might find something of interest there for: Baldwin, Backus, Knight, Rogers, Spencer, Richardson, Tracy, George Partridge, Ralph Partridge (not related), Green, Carter, Kemp, Seabury, Knowlton Those of you who have web pages might think of a way you can counter these incorrect genealogy links that get started. Got to start trying to counter them somewhere. In fact, what I may do is to also list web pages in a table of web pages on a certain relationship to show which ones are wrong and right, or one or the other, as the case may be. 3. Greetings Norris... I am the "expert" for the Kemp Family Association on the Kemp's of New England. The only child of William and Elizabeth (Partridge) Kemp was a daughter, Patience. Due to the fact that older sources are being continually cited, erroneous information on this family continues to be perpetuated. Last year, I wrote an article for our newsletter, "The Kemp Files", on this family, correcting all the lineages. A good number of sources were cited as well. If you'll send me your regular snail mail address, I'd be happy to send a copy of this article to you. Bob Young, Secretary Kemp Family Association

I have followed this lady (my ancestor!) to about a dozen web pages out there and none seem to have her lineage recorded, or if so, have it right! If you have a web page, you may want to re-evaluate where you have this lady, if she, or Elizabeth Partridge, or Samuel Seabury, are in your database. I've seen some sources of "Mayflower Gleanings" meaning that may be one place where the myth is being repeated. ________________ NEHGR April 1904, p. 101-107, discusses in depth this family line and the myths. The Laying of Two Genealogical Ghosts The final synopsis is this: "(1) Rev. Thomas Thacher and Elizabeth Partridge, his wife, had no daughter, Patience Thacher. (2) Elizabeth Partridge, dau. of Rev. Ralph Partridge, married 1st William Kemp, by whom she had a daughter, Patience Kemp, b. 11 May 1643. William Kemp d. previos to 23 Sep 1641, and hence subsequent to this date his widow was free to contract a second marriage; which in fact, she did, by marrying on 11 May 1643, Rev. Thomas Thacher, who subsequently, 2 January 1644-5, became the minister at Weymouth, MA, and remained there in that capacity until subsequent to the death, on 2 Jun 1664, of Elizabeth partridge his wife. Rev. Thomas Thacher was born in England 1 May 1620, and in 1643 was presumably about the same age as Elizabeth partridge, who like himself, was born in England (date of birth unknown), and came to this country 17 Nov 1636 with her father. Elizabeth Partridge, soon after her coming to this country, married first William Kemp, who had reached this country, previous to her arrival, 3 Jun 1635, on the ship James. Soon after his marriage William Kemp died, leaving but one child, Patience Kemp, and not leaving a son William Kemp, 2d, who never in reality existed at all. Elizabeth Partridge-Kemp, widow of the only William Kemp, shortly after her first husband's death, married on 11 May 1643, Rev. Thomas Thacher, and her daughter by her first husband, Patience Kemp, became the step-daughter of Rev. Thomas Thacher, and was received into his family, and brought up by him, and married from his home in Weymouth, MA, on 9 (or 16) Dec. 1660, to Samuel Saberry (Seabury), of Duxbury, MA. (3) Samuel Seabury did NOT marry Patience Kemp, dau. of William Kemp, 2d, (who never existed in the flesh), and of Patience Thacher (who also never existed), but married Patience Kemp, dau. of William Kemp, 1st, (the only William Kemp), and Elizabeth partridge, his wife, he being her first husband. (4) William Kemp, 2d, and Patience Thacher are two mythical indivduals, summoned into existence by early genealogists, in order that by their marriage they could give birth to a Patience Kemp, who was subsequently to marry Samuel Seabury. It was known beyond doubt that Samuel Seabury did marry a Patience Kemp, and so these hypothetical parents were manufactured for her." End Quote: Thanks for your support. Hi: I'm the person that asked the question. I found this at the library today. Those of you carrying this lady in your databases may want to re-evaluate how you've got her placed. (Not that a 1903 article is the last word, but I found no other reference since to counter, but I was working with an index a couple years old.) NEHGR, Vol 57, 1903, Pg 416-7, Author - Henry A. Parker: "Partridge - Kemp - Thacher - Seabury. Elizabeth, daughter of the Rev. Ralph Partidge of Duxbury, was married first to William Kemp, who was of Duxbury, Jan 7, 1638/9; proposed freeman March 5, of the same year; and who died before Nov 2, 1641, when his widow Elizabeth was granted adminstration on his estate. By her first husband, William Kemp, she had Patience, her eldest daughter, who, November 16, 1660 (town record), was married to Samuel Seabury, physcian, of Duxbury. The widow Elizabeth (Partridge) Kemp was married May 11, 1643, (Thacher's Thacher Fam.) to his first wife and the mother of his children. See Plymouth Col. Rec., and, in particular, the grant of land to Samuel Seabury "son-in-law" of William Kemp; will of Rev. Ralph Partridge, (Register, Vol 47, Pg 279), compare diary of Rev. Peter Thacher (History of Milton, pg 279). A comparison of dates leaves no doubt of this family connection as stated." ______________ Note: I have seen web references to Patience being a daughter of Thomas Thatcher, then that daughter marrying William Kemp, Jr, having a Patience Kemp, and that daughter marrying Samuel Seabury. That connection is impossible and couldn't have happened, since Sam and Patience got married in 1660. I have seen references to a Patience (Thatcher) Kemp, structured as the child of Thatcher/Eliabeth above, but without showing the marriage of the daughter Patience to Samuel Seabury, attributed to "Mayflower Increasings, 1996 Edition". Whether the author of that 1996 book is merely repeating the error of previous works ignorant of the above article, or knew about the article, explored it, and formed a disagreement is I don't know. 1. Patience Kemp m Samuel Saybury 11/09/1660 - Confusion??
    2. Norris
    3. Hi: Wonder if someone out there knows the REAL story about which Patience Kemp really married Samuel Saybury (if at all)on 11/09/1660 in Weymouth, Mass. This is primarily Plymouth Colony genealogy. I have seen some web pages, etc showing the Patience Kemp who married Sam Saybury was a child from William Kemp and Elizabeth Partridge. But, that doesn't seem to work as Elizabeth Partridge was actually married to Thomas Thatcher at the time. (Unless maybe Elizabeth married a Kemp before Thatcher and was widowed??) I have seen one web page that showed that Thomas Thatcher and Elizabeth Partridge had a daughter Patience in early late 1630's, early 1640's, and that daughter had a daughter who married William Kemp who married ole Sam Seabury. But, that doesn't work as she couldn't have been older than, say, eight years old at the oldest. I think I've seen a few other variations on this theme twisted around different directions and none make any sense. Who knows who the Patience Kemp really is that married Sam Seabury, or is the marriage record that they married a complete sham and some other lady had their seven children?? I am a descendant of this couple and would like for the real parents to please stand up! PS. I've also seen quite a few times where Patience (Thatcher) Kemp, showing as a daughter of Elizabeth (Partridge) Thatcher, is showing with the date of death of Patience (Kemp) Seabury, who died on 06/02/1664. At first blush, that would suggest that Patience was widowed and married ole George, and that Kemp was really her married name. Could that be what happened? Thanks for your support! Also how do I get on the MDFREDER mailing lists. I am not too good on the internet use. But if you will tell me I can do it. Sally Kemp Hagins
