    1. Cemetery destruction in Indiana
    2. Hello everyone, I am sending this out to all the listgroups that I receive, because I feel that it is very important that everyone knows about this. Maybe if enough people respond to their state governments, we can stop this needless destruction of our ancestors graves. Thanks, Jennifer Tullis On Mon, 31 Aug 1998 [email protected] wrote: Dear family members, fellow family historians, genealogical researchers, and friends, Rarely have I been so moved to take action as I am this evening. A fellow family history researcher, Berdine Payne, forwarded to me an e-mail which contained a newspaper article describing the unfortunate fate of the historic Rhodes pioneer family cemetery in Wayne Township, Indiana. The Clydes, Weales, Gibsons, and many of their allied families have ancestors who lived and died in Indiana. This story effected me even more so as a result of that realization. The Indianapolis Star & News article by Bill Shaw (Aug 22, 1998), "THE DEATH OF A CEMETERY - WAYNE TOWNSHIP GRAVEYARD DESTROYED FOR WAREHOUSE...." explains how the demolition of the cemetery occurred. Duke Realty Investments, Inc. purchased the 21.2 acres of land where the final remains of forty-three members of the Rhoads, Foltz, Shute and Rude families lay. Thirty-five graves of the one tenth acre pioneer cemetery contain remains of children. The article explains that a cemetery was not in the plans for their development of the site. In a callous display of disrespect for the dead and of complete disregard for Hoosier heritage, Duke Realty Investments, Inc. proceeded to systematically demolish the cemetery in preparation for the construction of a massive warehouse. Bones removed, tombstones destroyed, stately trees knocked down, hill leveled. All traces of the cemetery obliterated. Legally! Indiana state law allows property owners to demolish the cemeteries on their land. It allows them to "Throw away the tombstones, plant corn, or build a warehouse on the graves." Is nothing sacred in the quest to satisfy corporate and stock holder greed? I urge you to visit the Weales Family History & Genealogy Web site to read the full article and to take action. Use the resources shown on the Web page and in this message to let your voice be heard. Please write the Governor of Indiana and the members of the Indiana General Assembly and let them know that Indiana laws must be changed to protect our national and state heritage through the preservation of cemeteries and family plots. Let them know what you think about Duke Realty Investments, Inc. and others actions to obliterate the final resting places of our families. Please forward this to your family, friends, and anyone else who may take an interest and action. I also urge you and them to write your state's elected officials and let them know that you don't want what happened to Rhoads Family Cemetery to happen in your state. Become informed and take action: read our national and state laws; read books; investigate Web resources such as Tomb With A View newsletter; join a local cemetery preservation organization; get involved with Save Texas Cemeteries, Indiana Pioneer Cemeteries Restoration Project or similar organization; and share your thoughts on this issue on the Spinning Weales message board. I sincerely thank you for your time and I wish us all luck in being heard on this issue. 1. Reunion in England !!
    2. Robert Young
    3. The Kemp Family Association is pleased to announce its first International Reunion. This exciting opportunity will be held April 9-12, 1999, at the Christ Church College in Canterbury, England. This first ever chance for our international members to get together and share family history has been arranged through the generous efforts of K.F.A. member Shelagh Mason, who lives in Canterbury. It will be held in conjunction with the Reunion of the Stead/Steed One Name Study Group. Christ Church College has a very compact campus, by University standards, which means all facilities are within a maximum 5 minutes walk from each other, and usually a lot less. The College is situated just outside the City Walls, close to many sites of great historical importance, and is easily reached by road and rail. A walk into the city takes a mere 5-10 minutes, where many attractions await, not least of which is the Cathedral, the seat of the Church of England for the World. The College itself is built on some of the land belonging to St. Augustine’s Abbey, which celebrated 1,400 years of Christianity in 1997, and is next to the old monastery, now the King’s School houses of residence, and a former home of king Henry VIII. A vast range of accomodation is available in and around Canterbury, from B&B’s at about £25 per person, per night, to 4 star hotels at £180 per night. Accomodation is also available on the campus of Christ Church in recently modernized student rooms, which have en-suite showers. The rooms are single and are small (We must stress this to our overseas visitors who may not be used to the small room sizes that most University students endure), but the plan is that the only time you spend there is to sleep and shower. Each room comes with tea and coffee making facilities (but no fridge) and the usual towels and soap. The cost of B&B at the College is £26.25 per person per night, single accomodation only. The accomodation block is situated equidistant between the refectory and the seminar rooms in the recently refurbished and extended Old Sessions House that we will be using. There will also be a Reunion Buffet on Saturday Evening - strictly informal. The College also provides meals at a reasonable cost, and several are planned to be included in the schedule of events. Canterbury itself is well served with the usual range of Pubs for bar food and meals, together with cafes and restaurants for a diverge range of tastes. A number of Excursion Tours will also be offered, on a strictly first come basis, and at a slight additional cost. These tours will include the Canterbury Cathedral Archives, the Cathedral itself (not the usual tourist type tour) and a side trip to the quaint town of Wye, ancestral birthplace of John Kemp, Archbishop of Canterbury in the 15th Century. We will also have use of the College’s Computer Suite. There will be a wide variety of programs, databases, family trees, CD’s, and internet access available, as well as a color flatbed scanner, high resolution color printer and B&W laser printer. On Sunday, the joint Reunions will have a series of lectures available, including Irish Ancestry, Non-Anglican Resources, and Emigration. In addition, a number of genealogical groups will have displays. Groups invited include the Kent Family History Society, The Society of Genealogists and The Guild of One-Name Studies. The Kemp Family Association will also have a display at this meeting. Further information will be mailed shortly to all KFA members outside the U.S., as well as a notice being included in the newest issue of the Kemp Files (due to be mailed next week). A deposit of £20 per person (or equivalent) will be required with your reservation. If you just can’t wait for a brochure, you can contact the KFA Secretary on the Internet at: [email protected]

    1. Upgrading
    2. John Kemp
    3. Dear all, This afternoon, I am going to attempt the following: a..... Increase my computer ram from 32 Megs to 64 Megs so that I can play about with some large scanned photographs. b..... Install a new 56k modem because my old 28.8k modem keeps locking up. c..... Upgrade to Windows 98. In view of these changes, I think that the chances of me ever appearing again on the lists are at the best pretty remote. If no one hears from me for a few days, then please address all e-mails to me courtesy of the local asylum (I remember what upgrading to the earliest version of Windows 95 was like). Ann has decided to go out for the afternoon taking our cat with her. The last time that I attempted a major upgrade, the cat sat with her paws over her ears for the rest of the day. Kindest regards, Ann & John Kemp Gloucester UK

I got confused 'cause of the two Elizabeth Partridges with different lineages, but yet their lines merge in my case.. so I'm related to both of them! Norris PS: Anyone doing New England genealogy can check the index of "Ancestors of American Presidents" by Gary Boyd Roberts to see if your end-of-line ancestors (or in-between) are there. Actually, you don't have to be of New England ancestry, but chances are "good" if you have New England ancestors that you've got a president or two in your tree somewhere. Kemp. Hi George: Grandaughter Patience Kemp was mentioned in grandfather Ralph Partridge's will. There is no mention of a William Kemp, Jr. I have been forwarded an analysis from another researcher that contended that both "William Kemp, Jr," and "Patience Thacher" are complete fabrications and in fact did not exist. Apparently these people were "manufactured" by early Thacher genealogies of the 19th century to justify a Patience Kemp, dau of Elizabeth, marrying Sam Seabury. However, I have not been able to get the citation for that document. I've heard from Bob Young on this list that an article was included in a Kemp newsletter about this situation, but I have not see what that says. PS: Did you know you were a cousin to Ulysses S. Grant? His lineage from Elizabeth Partridge is at my web page. Home page in sig. 2. George Gildersleeve
    3. My first query to this site. I'm descended from William Kemp and Elizabeth Partridge. You state Patience was an only child but my records show a son, William, b 1638 at Duxbury, MA. Will make the necessary changes with validation. My line is: William Kemp and Elizabeth Partridge Patience Kemp and Samuel Seabury John Seabury and Elizabeth Alden (m1697) Patience Seabury and Joseph Latham (m 1722) Abigail Latham and Isaac Griswold (m 1760) Abigail Griswold and George Dennis (Jr.) (m 1782) Emily Dennis and Ezra Ambler Boland (m ?) George Dennis Boland and Electa Maria Miller (m ?) Mary Maria Miller and William Gildersleeve (m 1873) Would like clarification on my data and also would like to be able to attain additional information re. Kemp. I have an extensive database but, as yet, haven't established a home page. I hope I will get this done this week. George Gildersleeve from within one mile of 117 degrees W and 43 degrees N

    1. Re: John Kemp of Harpswell, Maine
    2. Robert Young
    3. David, I have an extensive file on Kemp's in early New England. Timothy and Hannah (Snow) Kemp of Harpswell are one of my stumbling blocks. Timothy KEMP is believed to be a son of Silas KEMP. Silas was born 11 Nov 1741 in Groton, Mass, the son of Hezekiah and Dorothy (Adams) KEMP. Silas was listed as one of the "refugees" in Harpswell in 1778, seeking shelter after the British sacked and burned Falmouth, Maine. He enlisted in Captain Nehemiah Curtis' Company in Harpswell, 7 Jul 1779. He served for two months on the Penobscot Expedition, and was discharged 25 Sep 1779 in Harpswell. By 1790, Silas had removed to Addison County, Vermont. So many pieces of the puzzle point towards Silas KEMP as being the founder of the Harpswell Kemp's, but finding that elusive "proof" is a goal still not achieved. 1. Sincere Thanks
    2. John Kemp
    3. Dear all. May I offer my most sincere thanks to everyone who sent their good wishes to me when I had my recent stay in hospital. I am afraid that I am not yet up to answering each of you individually, so if you would accept this collective thank you. While I was in hospital, my son logged on for me, collected all the e-mails and printed out the well wishes. When I came round after the operation, feeling awful, almost wishing that it was all over as I felt so bad, a young nurse wondering what all the messages were, started reading them out to me. Suddenly knowing that there were all those kind people, most of whom I will never ever meet, offering me their thoughts and prayers made me feel so much better, it was unbelievable. Thank you all. Anyway, I was allowed home yesterday, which was our wedding anniversary much Ann's delight as we had at least part of the day together at home. Everything has gone according to plan with the operation and I should soon be back to normal, moaning about everything and anything. Thank you all so much, Kindest regards, Ann & John Kemp Gloucester UK
