    1. Re: Edward & Robert Kemp
    2. Robert Young
    3. I have quite a bit of information available on both of these families. Edward and Samuel Kemp are believed to have been related - possibly uncle/nephew. In 1658, both men signed a petition to the General Court for permission to trade with the Indians. In Edward Kemp's will, he referred to Samuel as "Kinsman". The existence of Rabert Kemp, however, has been recently called into question. Many who accept the uncle/nephew relationship between Edward and Samuel further consider Robert Kemp to have probably been the brother of Edward. There is a listing in the church records of Dedham, Mass., stating that "Robert Kemp and wife" were admitted to the church. In the "Great Migration Newsletter", published by NEHGS, Volume 4, No. 1, page 5, the editor makes note that it was most likely Edward Kemp being admitted to the church in Dedham, with the "error" being attributed to the Rev. John Allin, pastor of the church at that time. It is appearing more likely that Robert Kemp never existed, and that Samuel Kemp most likely arrived from England sometime in the 1656-1658 time frame. Yet another area that has been being explored is the relationship of the Foster's - i.e. of Samuel Foster, who married Edward Kemp's daughter, Esther, and of Sarah Foster, who married Samuel Kemp. The father of Sarah Foster, Andrew Foster, is known to have died in Andover 7 May 1685, at the ripe age of 106 years (Andover VR's). Sarah Foster is supposed to have been born in 1642 (according to the Foster Genealogy), which means that Andrew was 59 years old. It is believed, but not yet proven, that Samuel Foster was Andrew's son by a first marriage, and accompanied his father to New England. Both men appear in records at about the same time, and the close affinity of the Kemp's and Foster's lends more credibility to the issue. Lastly, there has never been found anything to prove the last name of Ann Foster, Sarah's mother. At various times, she has been given the name "Roach" or "Alcock", but proof is lacking. Also, there are a number of genealogies out there (especially with WFT) that still show Sarah Foster as the daughter of Sgt. Thomas Foster of Billerica. This has been provenn false, conclusively, but because it appears in the 1904 "Kemp's of New England", it continues to surface. Bob Young, Secretary Kemp Family Association [email protected]

    1. Re: Tree Plotting......
    2. Hello Judy. > I was very interested in this subject {an enquiry about plotting out > family trees rather than hundreds of sheets of A4 or letter-sized > paper] --did you get any American answers? The answers I saw were for > the UK. Yes - may I suggest you check out: http://www.familygraphics.com/ They are set up for Reunion and thus Mac users - but I'm sure there must be others out there - it's just that I haven't found them! An interesting site - I suggest those outside the US/CAN also check out the site to see what IS available. In the UK it is very expensive to have your family tree plotted, not printed (we are talking in colour). A "large" tree can cost over 400 pounds, so I was told. This is done from scratch in CAD. Why, oh why is there no service for IBM compatibles that can accept gedcoms and then plot them out on continuous paper a metre wide?!!!!!! Regards to you all from a chilly and wet Canterbury. 1. Kemps in Brighton, England and Cornwall
    2. Andy Kemp
    3. Hi, I am looking for more information on a Kemp family which seemed to be based in and around Brighton, England. If anyone has any advice to help, I would be very gratefull. This is a breakdown of some the family members. Richard Kemp- born 1804 in Sedlescombe (a Private in the 10th Hussars and lived in Edward Street Brighton) married Anne Eutheme ? they had a son called Richard Kemp (my great great grandfather)born 21st April 1827 (again led a military career which explains why his children were born all over the country) -died 27th dec. 1909 He moved to Cornwall around 1880 with his 2 youngest children-(Robert and Thomas) He may have had brothers and/or sisters but I have no records of them. he married Mary Ann Cutbath They had 6 children- George Kemp- (it looks possible that this is the Kemp that worked alongside Marconi at Poldhu in Cornwall) Alfred Henry Kemp- born July 1857 in Birmingham Mary Ann Sarah Kemp- born October 1859 in Hounslow, Middlesex moved to Cornwall and married William Tucker Arthur Wheeler Kemp- born August 1851 at St. James in Norwich Robert Richard Kemp- born 18 september 1871 in Marlebone, London later moved to Cornwall Thomas Cutbath Kemp (my great grandfather)- born 21st Dec 1873 and lived most of his life in Cornwall. Joined the Navy and died on 4th feb 1924 in New York Thanks Andy Kemp Danetree 48 Vesper Road Kirkstall Leeds LS5 3NX 0113 2753701

    1. Re: Kemp's in AL.
    2. REVELAND
    3. Judy, I recently saw your query on the Kemp mailing list and thought I would share my KEMP line from Lamar Co., AL. The only common name I see is Pleasant, but you never know. My ancestor is probably a contemporary of yours and I thought there might be a possibility they were brothers. I will copy an article I submitted for the Lamar Co. Heritage book. Let me know what you think. (the article) Edward Jefferson and Tabitha Kemp Edward Jefferson Kemp was born about 1806; his wife, Tabitha, in about 1809, both natives of South Carolina. They were probably married sometime before 1835 in South Carolina. By 1839/40 they had moved west to Alabama and may have first settled in Coosa County, where an Edward “Camp” is found listed in 1840 when the Federal Census was recorded. The Kemp family found their way to Fayette County perhaps as early as 1844 when an “E. J. Kempt apprehended a horse thief.” They are clearly there by 1850 when the Federal Census was recorded for Beat 5, 16th Division. After once settling in west central Alabama, the Kemps never left the general area. In 1860 they were living in the Millport Post Office area of Fayette County and in 1870 they are found in the neighborhood served by the Big Pond Post Office of the newly formed Sanford County. Finally in 1880, when they were both in their 70s they are found living in Township 16, Range 16 of Lamar County. It is difficult to know just which of his given names Edward Jefferson Kemp generally used since he is found in public records as E. J., Edward J., Jefferson, E. Jefferson, and Jeff. To further complicate identifying him, his surname has been recorded as Kemp, Camp, and Kempt. Tabitha may have gone by the nickname, Bitha, a nickname used by a granddaughter named for her. It is also possible that she was the daughter of Polly Wilson who was 83 years old and living with the Kemps in 1870; Polly reported her nativity also as South Carolina. Edward Jefferson and Tabitha Kemp became the parents of at least seven children as follows: Starling Kemp was born about 1836 in South Carolina. He and his wife Emeline, were the parents of at least ten children: Pleasant W., born about 1863; Silas W., born about 1864; James M., born about 1866; Electa, born about 1867; Frances L., born about 1869; Mary J., born about 1872; William A., born about 1874; Willis L., born about 1876; Edward J., born about 1878; and John H., born about April, 1880. Mary Caroline Kemp was born between 1839 and 1942 and died between 1880 and 1884. She married December 20, 1858, Martin Van Buren Smith, son of Hiram and Winnie Smith. Their family included Mary Jane, born March 11, 1860, died September 20, 1938, and married William Wesley Jackson; Winnie A., born about 1862/1863 and married Thomas Welch; Henry F., born about 1866; Missouri C., born August 7, 1870, died May 8, 1947, and married a Ward; William Perry, born July 27, 1872, died April 14, 1970, and married Lizabeth D. “Betty” Fortner; Rachel T., born about 1874; Sarah C., born about 1879; Lincoln, born after 1880, married a Wilson; and, Tabitha “Bitha,” born after 1880 and married Dave Owen. Martha J. Kemp born about 1840. Francis Kemp born about 1843. Robert J. Kemp born about 1846 and died before 1860. Jameson K. Kemp born about 1850 and married Amoritta R. about 1856. They became the parents of Elva M., born about 1857 and died before 1880; Silas W., born about 1872; Nancy J., born about 1876; and Thirsdy R., born about 1879. Missouri Ann Kemp, whose birth has been recorded as February 25, 1855, but based on her age reported on various records, could have been born in October, 1852 or June 29, 1850. She died on December 16, 1939. Missouri married James W. “Bud” Abbott on September 10, 1874. They became the parents of Sarah “Sally,” born about 1871 and married John Street; Ella C., born October 1876, married William G. Murphy between 1900 and 1907 and had at least Grover E., Mattie M., and Palmer L.; and, James Roscoe, born about 1878, married Sarah Abigale about 1896 and had at least Claudia, Lou, and Lindsey. Edward Jefferson and Tabitha Kemp’s death dates and burial locations are currently unknown. Written by: Delores Y. 3. Ted, My records show Pamela KEMP (not Pamelia) was born 21 Feb 1814 in Pepperell, Middlesex, Massachusetts, the daughter of Robert and Mary (??) Kemp. Source is Vital Records of Pepperell to 1850, page 56. Pamela Kemp was a direct descendent of Samuel Kemp, who was the progenitor of most New England Kemp's before the Civil War. 1. KEMP, Pamelia or Parmelia or Tryphosia, New York, 1810-1840
    2. There are two KEMPs lurking on my family list, and neither have been particularly eager to reveal their past. First is Tryphosia KEMP. She was mentioned in a family record as having been the mother of John BARTON. They were reportedly from Newfane, Niagara Co. New York. I have found no record of her. Second is Pamelia or Parmelia P. KEMP. She married Enos Larkin on July 19, 1834 in Troy, Rensselaer Co. New York. She was born Feb. 21, 1813, in Lowell, Middlesex, Mass. according to the IGI. By 1836, the family was in Lenawee County, Michigan, and then in Calhoun County, Michigna, where she died June 5, 1894. Seeking anyone with knowledge of either of these KEMP ladies to share information and research efforts. Ted Holden

    1. KEMP - BELGIUM/FRANCE
    2. Linda Nebrich Beilein
    3. I have been searching for my Great Grandfather John (Jean) J. KEMP for years. Finally, I found he was born 18 Aug 1830 in Dunkerque, France. However, his naturalization shows him as being born in Belgium. He applied for citizenship in 1856 and naturalized in 1860 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. His parents were John Baptiste KEMP and Ann LOONIS. In some of the census films from Buffalo, NY he states he was born in France, Alsace Lorraine and Germany. Sometimes his name is KEMPF and KAMP. He married Ann KAVANAGH in 1855 in Buffalo, New York. His occupation was a sailor. He came to the US in 1841 making him 11 years of age, but we cannot find who he came with or if he came alone. Years later, he was a Sailor on the Great Lakes. Any help would be appreciated. Linda Nebrich Beilein [email protected] http://www.buffnet.net/~lbeilein ICQ 7818295
