    1. KEMPs of Portsea
    2. Martin Willcocks
    3. Thanks, Jan: You're quite right, of course. However, the records I mentioned were the only Sarah KEMPs found in the IGI, four were christened at Portsea, the other two out of area at Brading and Selborne. The 1851 census gave Sarah's age and birthplace, but we cannot really deduce anything about her baptism records. I guess the first place to look is the marriage lines, which should give her father's name and occupation, as well as her age at marriage (would she lie there as well as to the census-taker?) The father's name could be William, Robert, James or George. Regards, Martin Willcocks Salt Lake City, UT, USA. P.S. I really appreciate the help I'm receiving from this list!

    3. Also, Christening/Baptism could take place several years after birth. Sometimes whole families of various ages, were Baptised at the same time. If you are in the US and are reasonably close to a FHC, get a film for the year in question for Portesea and start searching. If you can find her birth record it should tell you her parents. Have you tried Familysearch.com on line? Happy Hunting! 3. Hello all: I'm interested in tracking down ancestry of Sarah KEMP of Portsmouth, England who married Edmund SQUIRE on 8 Jan 1826 at St. Mary's Portsea. There are several Sarah KEMPs listed in the IGI, but of those born in Portsea, there appear to be four: chr. 16 Jun 1805 (parents: George & Sarah); chr. 26 Jul 1805 (parents James & Elizabeth); chr. 31 Oct 1806 (parents Robert & Hannah); and chr. 30 Sep 1808 (parents William & Jane). We know from the 1851 census that Sarah SQUIRE (married name) was 47 which would put her birthdate between 1 Apr 1803 and 31 Mar 1804 so she could not have been chr. before 1803 (which rules out a Sarah KEMP of Brading Hampshire) and her birthplace is shown as Portsea (which also rules out a Sarah KEMP of Selborne). Does anyone on the list have any connections to any of the Sarahs listed above or to another Sarah KEMP born 1803-4 in Portsea, Hampshire England? Martin Willcocks Salt Lake City, UT, USA (researching CLEMENTS, CONN, KEMP, SQUIRE, WILLCOCKS in Hampshire, England.)

Keep in mind that the ages given in the census records (both UK and US) are the ages that the individuals gave to the census taker. It is not uncommon for a person to "age" only 8 years, or over 12 years, between censuses. Bob Young, Secretary Kemp Family Association
