    1. Web Mistress Needs Help in CT
    2. Linda Dolby
    3. The Judson Connection / Kemp Family Association Web Mistress is ever so frustrated .. Lost Info ... Have just returned to Texas from a trip to New Haven, CT and have discovered that the piece of paper we wrote down the critical info on death connection for DAR membership is missing. Staff at City of New Haven Vital Records Dept would not copy line item on death because book was too big, so we wrote info down and cited vol and page - now we cannot find that notation anywhere in our papers. Would be ever so grateful if some kind soul who is going to the City of New Haven Vital Records Dept at City Hall would look up: Henry Charles Parmelee died Oct 18 1869 New Haven - found in index but I misread page # however my husband tried several combinations and did find the entry (old handwriting is sometimes hard to read) Need the volume and pg # of the actual entry from the big book which says he died and is the son of Henry Parmelee & Rachel Peckham. Would also be grateful if you could write down info on that line. Thanks so much from the New Haven Co. GenWeb Coordinator ... just cannot believe we lost the info! Next, lookups are required for all the above persons to determine lifetimes and possible relationships. Apologies for the false start, but I have been looking for Hannah E. HOUSE for about 7 weeks. Just finding something seemed worthwhile sharing with the lists. I am currently seeking U.S.Civil War records from the National Archives of the USA for Theodore SHARP. The turn around time should take about 3 months, or by November 2000! I suspect there may be a Palatine connection between the HOUSE/SHARP families via Pennsylvania. Their families may have been part of the Palatine emigration, so beautifully discussed in The Trail of the Black Walnut. One of the terminal places of that migration was Brantford, Norfolk, Ontario, CANADA. I have some photographs of a visit of the SHARPs to Pennsylvania in the early 1900s, but I am still looking for them since my move from Pennsylvania. As I recall they are marked, so it might turn up something. Again, any further information about her family, especially the KEMP Family of Pennsylvania, would be greatly appreciated.

His family is listed here in the 1871 census: RG10 2263, folio 42, page 12, entry 66 Holmbush, StAustell, Cornwall Eliza Kemp/head/wid/43/Tin miner/b Cornwall, StAustell Mary Jane Kemp/dau/unm/19/Tin mine girl/b Cornwall, StAustell WilliamKemp/son/unm/16/Tin miner/b Cornwall, StAustell Alfred Kemp/son/14/Tin miner/b Cornwall, StAustell Alfred Kemp went to Australia sometime between 1871 and 1880 with Mary Charlotte Oliver, daughter of Richard Oliver and Mary Mitchell, from St.Blazey. A marriage certificate was never found. They had 2 children there. Alfred died in Australia in 1882 and Mary Charlotte came back to Roche, Cornwall, with her 2 children to her parents house, she died in 1885. We don't know what happened to Eliza, Mary Jane, or William listed in the 1871 census. A death certificate for Eliza was not found and I couldn't match up any William's or Mary Jane's with information from Australia....... Does this match up with anybody? Thanks in advance, Sincerely, Bill Kemp, Fl. USA.

    1. Re: Second Christian Name ?
    2. Dear Bill, It all depends on the family. My ancestors in VA and KY nearly all had double given names, from about 1700 on.But some families did not follow that custom. Very often, second names were family names, such as the mother's maiden name, so can be quite helpful. Betty Sullivan ----- Original Message ----- From: William O. 1. Second Christian Name ?
    2. William O. Kemp
    3. Hello, I would like to find out more information on my Kemp family. Did families have second christian names in the 1850's? This is the only one that I have found and I guess I may never know why? William married with the Kemp Coom surname in 1850 and by 1856 when another child was born he was listed as only Kempe. I had a researcher help me to find this information. See the marriage listing below: 27 July 1850, the parish church, StAustell, Cornwall William Kemp Coom Eliza Avery Full Full Bachelor Spinster Miner - StAustell StAustell Richard Kemp Richard Avery Miner Miner Banns Joseph Tamblyn, Samuel Treverton William's surname is Coom, with Kemp being a second Christian name. But look at his father; he is identified as Richard Kemp rather than Richard Coom...... This family had Mary Jane, b.1852, William, b.1854/1855, and Alfred James, b.1856, all in Kinver's Row and Holmbush, St. Austell, Cornwall. Just wondering if anyone else has run into this situation? I haven't been able to go any further back with this...... Any advice?? Thanks in advance, Bill Kemp

You have been added to the subscriber list of: [email protected] By default, copies of your own submissions will be returned. ** WELCOME to LAWS-UK GENEALOGY & LOCAL HISTORY List. ** (LAWS) Please ! ! READ this message, PRINT it, SAVE it!! WHO IS THE LIST OWNER? The list owner is John P Laws who lives just outside Lincoln, England. H can be contacted on the following e-mail address: [email protected] This is a discussion area for anyone who has an interest in Genealogy, General & Local History related to the Families of: LAW, LAWE, LAWES, LAWS, LAWSE, McLAW, McLAWS World-wide WHAT IS THE AIM OF THIS LIST? The aim of this list is to help each other by sharing information and knowledge, advising where one can locate, or offer to help search sources, in England & abroad. TO WHICH MODE AM I SUBSCRIBED? You are subscribed in MAIL mode - this means that you will receive a copy of all e-mails posted to the list as and when they are sent ie you will receive several individual messages per day. The amount can vary from about twelve to forty messages, although the average is approximately twenty. CAN I CHANGE MODES? Yes, you can change to DIGEST mode - this means that you will receive a daily 'digest' which is made up of all the individual messages sent to the list during the previous 12 hours(approx.). This is especially recommended for busy folk (you will receive all messages in full, but they will be incorporated into a single larger message). CAN PROFESSIONAL RESEARCHERS/INDEXERS SUBSCRIBE TO THE LIST? Yes, but PLEASE note, however, that whilst professional genealogists, indexers and record agents who have genuine family interests in the area covered are most welcome to join us, they must on NO ACCOUNT use the list as a means of touting for business or obtaining information from other subscribers to further their own ends. In short, if someone sends a message to the list with a query that you may be able to help with in a professional capacity, you may reply to that person PRIVATELY offering your services on condition that you mention your professional capacity and details of your charges at the outset. However, you MUST not try to help that person simply by posting their specific query on individuals to this or any other list though you may enquire about available sources etc. You must NOT send a message to the list advertising your services although you may include the URL with a one-line description for your Website in your signature. ANYONE MISUSING THE LIST FOR PERSONAL FINANCIAL GAIN WILL BE UNSUBSCRIBED WITHOUT EXPLANATION IF I WISH TO OFFER HELP FOR EXPENSES ONLY, CAN I SEND A MESSAGE TO THE LIST? Yes. It is perfectly reasonable to ask for travelling, photocopying, postage costs etc if you are able to help anyone so that you are not out of pocket. CAN MESSAGES BE SENT TO THE LIST IF I HAVE NOT BEEN SUBSCRIBED? The short answer is NO!. This is to protect you from spammers, nuisances etc. However, the list is not moderated. Any message sent to it is automatically bounced back out to everyone on the list. While I in no way want to stifle free discussion, as list owners we reserve the right to step in if a flame war erupts that becomes tedious for other subscribers, or if someone becomes unseemly (excessive use of profanity, for instance). Again, anyone causing upset to other subscribers will be removed from the list. FILE ATTACHMENTS AND HTML These are forbidden on Rootsweb Lists and will be rejected by Rootsweb. ****** Some mail packages generate a phantom attachment automatically ****** when the "reply" option is selected. SO - check the options on your mail reader, and ensure that **** the "HTML attachments" Or "RichText" option is switched OFF ***** **** messages are sent in "plain/text" format**** Also ensure that the "HTML attachments" option is switched OFF If you are unsure whether the settings on your mail reader are correct, send a trial message TO THE LISTOWNER who can advise. Recently Rootsweb have introduced an HTML Filter which should accept messages in HTML and turn them into plain text before forwarding them to the List. However it is inclined to produce some "gobbly-de-gook" so it is better to use plain text in the first place. VIRUS WARNINGS If you receive a Virus Warning from another party, PLEASE DO NOT forward it to the list under any circumstance. The majority of these warning are hoaxes (even if they do appear to come from a reliable source) and can cause a lot of unnecessary alarm. I would suggest that you firstly check the following web sites http://www.kumite.com/myths/home.htm http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html http://www.ncsa.com/services/consortia/anti-virus/alerthoax.html http://www.drsolomon.com/vircen/vanalyse/va005.html These are URLs which you can check to find out if the warning is genuine. You can only contact a virus from an e-mail attachment with an .EXE suffix or by opening a document in a word processor or other program which has a macro language - such as Word or Excel; this allows an embedded macro in the document to run invisibly. Alternatively by accessing a Web page which uses Java or similar; again, this is like a macro in that it can run a "useful" function, but can also be perverted to run a destructive action. YOU CANNOT COME INTO CONTACT WITH A VIRUS SIMPLY BY RECEIVING A PLAIN E-MAIL If, after having checked the above, you feel that your Virus Warning is genuine, then, and ONLY then, should you contact the *listowner* who will take the necessary action. PERSONAL MAIL and CHATTING If you have a personal message ( non relevant reply to question ) for the sender, please send it to their e-mail address, NOT the list server address. Any mail sent to the list will automatically be sent to everyone who subscribes. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I FIND A MESSAGE TO BE OFFENSIVE OR HAVE ANY OTHER COMPLAINT? Under no circumstances should you post a complaint to the list. In the first instance I suggest that you contact the listowner. There should also be a certain amount of tolerance towards those who are new to the Internet - we were all beginners once. SHOULD I INCLUDE A SIGNATURE AT THE END OF MY MESSAGES? If you are able to, use real names. Pointers to your Web Site and e-mail addresses would be helpful especially as some e-mail clients do not appear to show the e-mail address of the sender when receiving a message. However, please try and avoid including lengthy surname interests, especially if they are not relevant to the area covered by the list. HOW DO I POST A MESSAGE? To post a message to the list, send it to [email protected] HOW DO I UNSUBSCRIBE? Send a message to [email protected] and type unsubscribe in the body of the text and NOTHING else HOW DO I CHANGE TO DIGEST MODE? You will need to unsubscribe from mail mode (see instructions above) and also send a message to [email protected] and type subscribe in the body of the message and NOTHING else WHAT DO I NEED TO DO IF I CHANGE MY E-MAIL ADDRESS? You will need to unsubscribe under your old address and resubscribe under your new address ie send an unsubscribe message as above and then send a new message to [email protected] from your NEW address and type subscribe in the body of the message and NOTHING else SUBJECT HEADINGS When posting messages, it would be helpful if you could clarify in the SUBJECT heading, the County, Surname, Parish or subject you refer to e.g. MDX: LAWS Stepney SRY: LAW Walworth WIL: LAWES Salisbury ESS: LAWSE Brentwood ROX: MCLAWS Kelso For clarity please write all surnames (only) in CAPITALS AM I RESTRICTED TO THE SIZE OF MESSAGE I CAN SEND? Yes, for two reasons. Individual messages are restricted by Rootsweb to a maximum of 10kb, but more importantly, your message is far more likely to be read if it is brief. Please do not relate your whole family history - just give a few brief details so that anyone reading the message who may share your interests can contact you direct. You can then send all your additional info privately to that subscriber. SHOULD ANSWERS TO QUERIES BE SENT VIA THE LIST OR PRIVATELY TO THE ORIGINATOR OF THE QUERY? This depends on the nature of the answer! If you feel it would benefit other list subscribers then please do send via the list e.g. information on sources, books, particular towns/villages etc, but if it relates purely to a particular family then it is better to contact the originator individually. BOUNCED MESSAGES There are several reasons why your messages from the list may bounce ie Your ISP is down Your telephone company is down due to bad weather etc You have changed e-mail addresses without unsubbing from your old address and resubbing under your new You have gone away on holiday and your ISP is one that limits the amount of mail you can build up in your inbox (mail mode subscribers to AOL and Virgin take note!) You have not read and/or kept this Welcome Message and therefore you have no idea how to unsub/change modes/send messages to the list If you find that you have not received a message via the list in 12 hours, you may have been unsubbed. The Rootsweb Robot will automatically unsub you after a certain number of bounced messages so you may need to re-subscribe. WHAT SHOULD BE THE NATURE OF THE MESSAGES I SEND? Anything relevant to the area covered by the list or of national genealogical/historical interest e.g. repositories, sources, books, societies, web sites CAN YOU RECOMMEND ANY USEFUL WEB SITES? Yes, there are several sites that may be of interest, as follows: To submit & search Surnames for all your County Interests, & for County Web Pages, covered by this List, go to http://www.genuki.org.uk/ then go to England, then appropriate County. This will give you details with regard joining the County FH Societies and also Record Office addresses. All others of above at St. Mary's, Portsea, Hampshire. Grandfather: Robert Joice SQUIRE, m. Martha BOUND, 15 Aug 1802, Alverstoke, Hampshire. Robert Joice SQUIRE, m. Hannah RAYNER, 30 Jun 1806, St. Mary's, Portsea, Hants. Sarah SQUIRE was 47 in the 1851 census so was born abt. 1804, and daughter Julia was 24, so she would have need born abt. 1827, which fits the marriage date well. They lived at 33 Lion Place. Sarah was then a widow, government annuitant, and Julia was a dressmaker. That's about all I have found out so far. If anyone has any connections with the SQUIRE or KEMP lines or persons listed here, I'd be delighted to hear from you. Regards, Martin Willcocks Salt Lake City, UT, USA.
