May I suggest you send your browser to the "Making of America" site at: http://www.umdl.umich.edu/moa/ and do a search on KEMMERER! There is an interesting reference to Whitney & KEMMERER, Coal Shippers and Wholesale Dealers (1885) I have no idea who THIS Kemmerer is, but he has connections to PA. Their coal came from the Buck Mountain Vein in the Lackawanna District. Their shipping office was located at Mauch Chunk, at the head of the Lehigh Canal. Shipping radiated from Philadelphia. They also offered coke from Connellsville, manufactured from Basin Coal. I hope one (some) of you recognize part of this. It's too good to go to waste! Carl Sachs (Kemerer by marriage) Manheim PA
Carl & group~ Mahlon KEMMERER was from Mauch Chunk, PA then went to Wyoming. Kemmerer, Wyoming was named for him. Kathy In a message dated 98-05-03 16:34:21 EDT, you write: > You mention Wyoming . . . was Mahlon from PA and active in WY, or > was he from WY and active in PA?? > > Carl Sachs
Kathy, Diana, et. al., THE NEW CASSELL'S GERMAN DICTIONARY gives the definition of the German noun "Kammerer" as "president of the exchequer (see also Kämmerer)." If someone were going to abbreviate this for convenience, it would probably come out "KAMM" if the person were German; but would possibly come out abbreviated as "KAME" if Anglicizing as well as abbreviating. It is important to remember that for decades after the American Revolution English law prevailed in many everyday practices. English law applied to changing names into the 19th Century. It was very lenient, allowing that changes became effective by "useage and custom." My ancestor, who bought a farm in 1802 in Mifflin County for 600 pounds Sterling, also changed his surname from "ZULAUF" to "SULOUFF" in the first decade of the 19th Century. Our frustrations over our ancestors changing their names comes from our rigid way of thinking about names, and such frustrations should not be blamed on our ancestors' lack of discipline. They were following the rules. It's just a fact that the rules were different back then. I do not know when the courts began trying to impose order on the rather common practice of people changing their surnames -- or having them changed involuntarily by public servants and ministers. I would like to learn more about the history of laws in Pennsylvania regulating name changes if anyone reading this knows the answer. (Large clip) ................................................... > ... 2 Elizabeth Kaemmerer b: August 04, 1774 ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Hello Jayne, I am a descendant of Elizabeth Kammerer. I have this verified by information in an old German Ahnentafel composed for my 3rd great-grandmother, Nancy Bender. Here are the details as I have them: Elizabeth Kammerer, b. abt 1770 to parents Peter Kammerer b. abt 1740 and wife Katherine (nee unknown). Peter is believed to have travelled to America in 1751 with brothers Christian and Dietrich aboard DUKE OF WURTTEMBURG. Elizabeth Kammerer m. in Lancaster to John Bender b. abt 1765 Lancaster Co. John Bender moved his family from Lancaster Co. to (now) Juniata Co. about 1800. A daughter of Elizabeth & John Bender, Nancy Bender b. 2/18/1795 in Manheim Twp., Lancaster Co., m. John Sulouff b. 1/4/1792 in Newberry Twp., York Co. They were married in (now) Juniata Co. and lived in Turbett Twp. They are my 3rd great grandparents. It appears from the portions of your message I copied above that perhaps my Elizabeth Kammerer is the same person as your "Elizabeth Kaemmerer b: August 04, 1774," daughter of Peter Kaemmerer. My estimate of Elizabeth Kammerer's birth year as 1770 was made entirely from the date of her daughter Nancy's birth in 1795. My question is, do you think it possible that your Peter Kaemmerer married twice, once to Juliana and once to Katherine; or alternatively that the names Katherine and Juliana are the first and second names of Peter Kaemmerer's only wife? Can you turn up any other evidence to confirm or deny either possibility? Also, please advise the nature of your evidence for the six children you name for Peter & Juliana Kaemmerer, of which Elizabeth is last? If it is from church records would you kindly tell me what church and where found? I have another unrelated question. I see you have "Hardy" in your name. I have a Thomas Hardy married to Mary Jane Sulouff b. 1836 in Juniata Co. PA. I estimate Thomas would have been born between 1830 and 1840. Thomas moved his family to Monticello (White Co.) Indiana, where Mary Jane died 12/28/1878. I am searching for any information on the parents or children of this Thomas Hardy. Do you have any suggestions that might help me? I have a lot of information on Mary Jane Sulouff's ancestry and will be thrilled to exchange information if I ever find someone who knows something about Thomas Hardy's family. Nelson R. Dear Dianna~ Boy, that Elizabeth REINHART really looks familiar to me. I'll do some digging to see if I can find out anything for you. It was not uncommon to find many different spelling variations of our name. Some of our ancestors couldn't write. So they might have been at the mercy of census takers who didn't really care or were spelling phonetically due to strong heavy German accents. After that, some might have just kept the spelling because they thought that was correct. I have also seen first names abbreviated quite often. Was Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbia Twp., Lancaster Co.? Thanks Claudia~ I'm sure going to be anxious to see the notes on your family that your grandmother gave you. You are so lucky. I'm sure you'll find some VERY interested folk here. Kathy
Dear Friends, I have been researching my KAME line for many years and have lots of descendents of my "last" ancestor, John KAME aka Johannes KAHM. He married Elizabeth REINHART at Trinity Lutheran Church in 1806. The first record I can find mentioning this name is John KAM on the 1779 Supply Tax List of Lancaster Boro (too old to be my Johannes/John?) My John KAME lived in Columbia, Lancaster County and his 4 children were all born there. They are: Jacob KAME b:1809 m: Sarah MILLER John KAME b: 1811 married 1) Mary HIPPEY 2) Mary HOGENTOGLER (HOUGENDOUBLER) Elizabeth KAME b: 1814 m: Philip HUFFMAN Catherine KAME b: 1817 m: John M. FISHER A very gracious lady (Thank you, Audrey!) went to Silver Springs Cemetery to take pictures of all KAME tombstones for me. She reports finding a stone for Abraham S. KAMM in the midst of the KAME stones. Family legend says that Sarah MILLER KAME was told she should "change her name back to the original family name" but she would not as "grandfather was dead, she married him by that name (KAME) and he had never used the original name." A woman of principles, darn her. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks for taking the time to read this! Dianna German Anderson
Kathy; I spent 4 days with my grandmother, and taped all the sessions and conversations. We have, over the course of several years, gone through boxes of ancient photographs and identified most of what she had. I just haven't transcribed the tapes to written text yet. Grandmother recently fell and broke her hip, and is in rehabilitation at the present time. In the last few years she has had both knees replaced, now total hip. She is not in the best of condition at the moment, but I am continuing to move forward as time allows. She has 2 books on "Kemmerer," I guess I need to pull them out and get serious about this project! <smile> Your rootsweb mail project is certainly motivation to do so! Anyway, grandmother has given me everything from her wedding book, to high school diaries that include how/when she first met grandfather Charles R. Kemmerer. I will post information as I weed through it. Thanks for all your dedication and hard work! Claudia

Jayne~ Your Peter might be the immigrant who came on the ship Duke of Wirttemberg Qualified 16 October 1751. Sailed from Rotterdam, Germany. Capt. name was Montpelier. Peter sailed along with Dietrich KAMMERER & Christian KAMMERER. I believe they were all brothers. No ages were given. Christian was my ancestor. Gets confusing working on this line because Christian (b. 1734) had sons named Christian (b. 1770) & Dietrich (1768); Dietrich had a son named Christian (1818). All lived in Campbelltown in Lebanon Twp., Lancaster Co., PA They also lived in Warwick Twp., Lancaster Co, PA My family then moved on to Killinger, Upper Paxton Twp., Dauphin Co, PA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If this Peter is yours, then his parents were possibly Georg Adam KEMMERER (senior) born 11/5/1713 (died 2/18/1752) in Graben, Karlsruhue, Baden, Germany & Eva Margaretha SCHMIDT born 10/16/1720 (died 1/1/1770) same location. Georg & Eva Margaretha's children were: Christian 9/9/1734 (my ancestor) Johann Christoph 11/14/1739 d. 10/8/1758 Johann Georg 5/26/1741 wife Catharina Barbara SUESS Eva Elisabetha 2/19/1744 husband Johann andreas SUESS Valentin 10/30/1746 George Adam (junior) 6/13/1748 Friederich 4/26/1751 Peter Dietrich All members of this family (above & below) were born in Graben. Georg's parents were Hans Wendel KEMMERER born /31/1682 died 7/6/1735 & Magdalena WEIDMAN born 2/26/1691 Another child of Hans Wendel: Maria Elisabetha 1/1/1710 Hans Wendel's parents were: Johann Christoph KEMMERER born 1652 died 6/23/1724 & Margaretha Barbara WENZ, daughter of Hans Jakob WENZ & Maria PFEIL born 6/20/1656 died 11/24/1691 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~` Whew! That's it for me for tonight. Hopefully, this is your family. Kathy
