Hello cousins, I went back to the library today to see if I could find something I overlooked before. I am convinced that Henry's father, John, was the son of Nelson Kelly. Let me explain and you tell me what you think. In Laurens Co., SC. there is the verbal will of Edward Garrot (Garrett). Nelson Kelly, Stephen Mullins and Stephen Garrett appeared before Daniel Wright, the Justice of the Peace to validate the authenticity of the verbal will. Among those mentioned is Pleasant Sullivan who had married the daughter of Edward Garrett. The document said the daughter was dead and Pleasant was to get nothing, but his child, Garrett Sullivan, was to get 10 pounds are to be schooled. I found that Frances Garrett, born 11 May 1768 Laurens Co., SC. died 1 May 1788, married Pleasant Sullivan. Pleasant then married Milly Kelley, daughter of Nelson Kelly and had 9 children. I tried to follow Pleasant Sullivan, but couldn't find much. He is found as a buyer at the estate of John Hunter in Laurens Co., SC. Garrett is first found in 1806 in Laurens Co., along with John Hunter and other Garretts as a buyer at the sale of William Ball. I last found him at the sale of John Barksdall, still in Laurens Co., but I don't have access to many South Carolina records. It seems everywhere I found Nelson Kelly/Kelley, there was a John Kelly not too far away. As I have already mentioned, a John is found at the church where Nelson attended in Bedford Co., TN. John (the one I feel must be mine) is found (with Nelson) at the estate sale of Edward Garrett. Nelson bought at the sale on 25 January 1795 and John bought at the sale held on 16 March 1795. Before this, Nelson Kelly was in Wilkes Co., NC. That's where he lived when he enlisted in the Rev. War. (To remind you, my great grandfather, Samuel Odum Cleveland Kelly, is said by his daughter to have been named Odum and Cleveland because he was related to both families.) I found no Kellys on the 1787 tax list of Wilkes Co., NC, however, I hit paydirt with the 1782 tax list. There was a John Kelley who owned 100 acres, 1 mule or horse and 4 cows. There was also Nelson Kelley who owned 200 acres and owned 2 mules or horses. Living near John Kelley were Benjamin and John Cleveland and George Wheatly. Next to Nelson Kelley was John Cleveland. I mentioned George Wheatly because on 27 September 1782 in Wilkes Co., Louvisey Kelley married Edward Turner, Thomas Turner was bondsman and George Wheatley, CC.The only other Kelly marriage I found was Ann Kelly who married Hezakiah Dier on 4 June 1782. The Kellys must have moved to South Carolina after 1782 and before 1787, wouldn't you think? I have a letter which I received several years ago. She wrote that the John Kelly who died in Lincoln Co., TN. in 1818 had a son named Henry. (I'm more and more believing him to be my John.) When I first received the letter, I understood her to say that John had a son named Henry and that Henry married Catherine Buchanan. I've run across the Buchanan name several times but have never persued it. Could Catherine Buchanan be the mother of my John Nelson Kelly who was born ca 1822? She wrote that this John also had sons John H, and James H. Does anyone know of a John Kelly/Catherine Buchanan marriage and their family? Supposedly, they married around 1818, I think. Anyway, I do believe that my Henry Kelly (b.SC 1796) is the son of John Kelly (probably the one who died in Lincoln Co., TN. in 1818) and that this John is the son of Nelson Kelly. I also believe that Nelson had a brother named John Kelly, Sr. (of course), who is the father Mary Parham, Lucretia Stevens and Sally Tanner. The daughters were of Limestone Co. AL. John died in Georgia in 1807. Anything anybody can add to this would really be appreciated. I'd love to know your thoughts on this. Thank you, Jim.
