    1. Searching For Descendants of Thomas Kelly & Family of Ontario Canada
    2. Hello Listers: I am searching for the descendants of Thomas KELLY and his wife, Hannah (BROWN) KELLY. They are found on the 1861; 1871; & 1871 Leebee Census of Oxford-on-Rideau Township {Also called Oxford Township for short}; Grenville County; Ontario; Canada. Thomas KELLY was born about 1808, 1810, or 1811 according to this Census. His wife, Hannah (BROWN) KELLY was born about 1814, 1815, or 1818, according to this same Census. For some reason their ages vary from each of the three Censuses, as do their children's ages. According to the 1871 Census of Ontario, his birthplace was in Ireland. At that time, his age was 61 years of age and his religion was Church of England, Anglican. His occupation was listed as a Labourer. The 1871 Census has Thomas KELLY residing in Leeds & Grenville North District (070} & in the Sub-District of Oxford (E). (2)Hannah (BROWN) KELLY; b. abt. 1814; 1815; or 1818 in Upper Canada or Quebec. Their Children were as follows: 1. James KELLY; b. 09,Sep,1838 in Burritts Rapids, Grenville Co., Upper Ca. 2. Eh! Mary: Since I last posted with you, I have come across some interesting facts. I discovered Thomas Kelly living in Oxford-On-Rideau Township on the Leebee/Censuses & Assessments/Grenville County/Ontario/Canada/1840/1841/1842/1851/1861/1871/1881. {Located @ <www.ott.igs.net/~leebee> Thomas KELLY was found under the Leebee Assessments as follows: Year. James Kelly is, subsequently, found on the 1871 Ceunsus as a 33 year old farmer of the Methodist Religion living in Kent District; Harwich Subdistrict. Also prior research shows, according to the Index to the 1871 Census of Ontario - National Archives of Canada {Archiva Net} that Thomas Kelly was 61 years of age and his birthplace was ireland. This also lists his religion as Church of England, Anglican and his occupation as a Labourer. The District is listed as Leeds & Grenville North (070) and the Sub-District as Oxford (E) which is Oxford-On-Rideau Township. From this information I glean that Thomas Kelly's D.O.B. was about 1810 or 1811. Furthermore, it appears that Hannah Kelly's maiden name was Hannah Brown based on your data base of Kelley/Kelly Marriages performed in Ontario in 1873, 1874 and 1875, as abstracted from the Ontario Marriage Films held at the LDS {Latter Day Saints Church} Library. I discovered this from the following marriage that you abstracted.... "KELLY, MARIA on 3 22 75; Cert. # 004 644... of KEMPTVILLE {year/75..remarks..}..Age 21. (Residence - ) Born in ONT, married JOHN ROSE. Parents: THOMAS & HANNAH BROWN (Rel - METH) WIT: IAS ROSE, MERRICKVILLE, THOMAS KELLY, OXFORD." On this same data base I discovered the following marriages of Thomas Kelly's children: "KELLY, MARTHA ON 09 01 73; Cert # 007 325..of KEMPTVILLE {year/73..remarks..}..Age 20. (Residence -) Born in Wolford T, married Edmund Fulcher. Parents: Thomas & Hannah Kelly (Rel -) Wit: Wm Brown & Maria Kelly." "KELLY, JERUSHA on 2 04 74; Cert # 005 468..of MERRICKVILLE {year/74...remarks..}..Age 20. (Residence-MERRICKVILLE} Born in Burritt's Rapids, married JAMES ALBERT ROSE. Parents: THOMAS & HANNAH (Rel - METH) WIT: WM & CATHERINE ROSE." I find that Thomas KELLY appeared on the 1841 & 1842 Leebee Oxford-On-Rideau, Grenville County, Ontario, Canada, Census as well as the 1840; 1841; and 1842 Leebee Assessments. However, Thomas KELLY does not appear in the 1848 or 1851 Leebee Census; nor in the 1844; 1847; 1850; or 1851 Assessments. For about a seventeen {17} year period {From 1844 until 1861}, Thomas KELLY disappears from Oxford-On-Rideau Township, Grenville County, Ontario, Canada, but Thomas KELLY appears again with a wife and a family in the 1861, 1871, and 1881 Leebee Census. Where Thomas KELLY went for that period of time is a mystery to discover. Did he go to Kent County Ontario, near Harwich Township, where James KELLY eventually, settled, or someplace else in Canada or Ireland? The "Great Hunger" occurred during this time period in Ireland. In the mid-1840's the potato famine was going on in Ireland. There may be some connection. The 1881 Leebee Census lists Thomas KELLY as about seventy (70) years old and Hannah KELLY as about sixty-seven (67) years old. They had one child Albert KELLY {About age 15} at home. The 1891 & 1901 Leebee Census does not list Thomas, Hannah, nor Albert KELLY in Oxford-On-Rideau Township. I suspect that Hannah & Thomas KELLY are deceased and that Albert KELLY has moved away. Please update my listing, on Kelly Kanadian Kin, accordingly. Thank You! Loren G. Kelly, An Irish Canadian American, Living In Texas! --part1_8ec727aa.2504cdb9_boundary--

    1. Census Taker
    2. CENSUS TAKER It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked of her children... Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some .and write some .. though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. Author Unknown

    1. Terry W. Kelly
    2. I may have sent this in before, but as you know, hope springs eternal. I'm looking for information on my paternal grandfather, Terry W. Kelly (Terrence William Kelly, I believe.) He married my grandmother, Mary Fiskin, in Indianapolis, IN in 1892. There they had two sons, Hugh William (1893) and Francis Terrence (1895.) They next turn up in Cincinnati, Ohio where they had a third son, James Gordon (1901.) On the birth record, the father is listed as "butcher." Sometime shortly thereafter, Terry Kelly disappeared. My father, the second son, did not have any memory of his father. The other two sons died early leaving a son to James Gordon (James Kelly), and two sons and a daughter for Hugh (Richard, Robert and Ruth.) I would be greatly appreciative if anyone could provide any information on this illusive grandfather. Rosemary Kelly Schatzman

    1. David O'Kelley, OKelly, O'Killia etc. etc.
    2. I have been researching the line of Richard Kelley (m to Maria Gibbs in 1775) for many years and have been quite stuck. I have inquired to the Kelley/Kelly list several times without luck. I have gotten nowhere until I went to original (and hard to read/find) records themselves. Apparently I was the victim of false info and a 19th century coverup. You see, family tradition has it that Richard Kelley came to America on a ship from England, and that he was in fact English. Much painstaking probing has proven this story quite wrong. Richard was in fact born in Barnstable, Mass. to Benjamin O'Kelley and his wife Mary (a land record). As it turns out, Benjamin is the grandson of the famous (in Kelley/Kelly circles) Irish immigrant David O'Killia through his son Benjamin. As most of you know, the 19th century was quite intolerant of "the Dirty Irish" and I believe my ancestors chose to forget about their Irish roots. The story was concocted that they were in fact descended from Englishman. I believe that still later when my family genealogy was starting to be researched, the English story was uncovered, and a well meaning researcher attributed the "English immigrant" story to Richard since he proved to be quite an illusive stumbling block for info. (In fairness to my Irish descended ancestors, a lot of Irish families made up the same "English Descent" story for survival. Irish were banned from most establishments, and jobs were with held from Irish people). Since I am now researching David I have read several articles that have listed David O'Killia as the son of Mac Tiege O'Killia and Anna Daly of Galagn Ireland. Thanks to Mike Kelly of Australia - I can set the record straight: his parents are named John McTiege (son of Tiege) O'Kelly and Anna Daly of Galagh, Co. Gallway, Ireland. I now have John McTiege's pedigree back to Adam & Eve. Since I am fairly new to the David O'Killia arena, I am requesting any info on him and his descendants I can find. Land Holdings, Stories, Occupation, Books, articles, etc.. Any help would be appreciated. Please only reply with info or questions. Mike Kelley

    1. Re: KELLY-D Digest V99 #61
    2. Hi everyone! Now that I have more info on my Kelly's I thought I would repost my names: Dennis Kelly and his wife Margaret Ahearn Kelly came from Ireland to NY approx. 1870/71 with two children I am sure of, Ellen Kelly born aprox. 1862 and Michael born aprox. 1850. I believe there was another son in btw. Edward. Michael was killed in NYC July 12, 1871 at the Orangeman Day Parade. One newspaper account, I think the Times, says he was shot in the heart, the other, The Irish World says he was shot in the face. He was 21 yrs old and a laborer. That horrible incident was also known as the "Hoffman Massacre" and various other names. Fifty something people were murdered that day in NYC, mostly Irish. Ellen went on to marry Martin John McNamara aprox. 1881. They had eight children, 5 of which survived childhood. They were John b.1882, Margaret b. 1884, Martin b. 1886, Hanorah b 1893, and William b. 1895. After NYC they moved to Brooklyn where Martin John died in 1910 shortly before his 65th birthday and Ellen died in 1911 at the age of 49. That's all I have at the moment. If anyone is familar with any of these Kellys I would be glad to hear from you. Happy hunting! Cathy
