Audrey: Go figure! Ha! :-) I too had similar assumptions about my Great Great Grandfather, Thomas Kelly, whom I discovered buried in an Anglican cemetery in Burritts Rapids, Oxford-on-Rideau Township, Grenville County, Ontario. Then I also confirmed that he was of the Church of England [Anglican] Protestant faith through the Ontario Census of 1871, instead of Catholic and that he was also of Irish origin; instead of being born in Canada. My understanding is that the Irish [Church of England or Anglican] Protestants were super United Empire Loyalists. They were very "Loyal To The Crown" & supported the British Empire anywhere in the world. Someone informed me that many Irish Protestants were given land around the Grenville-Leedsville County area following the War of 1812 because of their loyalty to England. Reportedly, they were brought in to maintain the balance of Americans & loyal Canadians. The fear was that the Americans who lived in the area would attempt to take over this area & it would possibly become part of the states. I was informed, that in those days, the border was easily crossed and both Americans & Canadians lived on both sides & claimed loyalty to the other country in which they were not residing. The border was supposedly not clearly defined and farmers from both countries lived on both sides & claimed the land was theirs and therefore part of the other country, when in fact it was not. The area that Michael Grant resided in was not too far north of New York State and he was probably one of the Irish Protestants, similar to my Great Great Grandfather, Thomas Kelly, who was encouraged to settled in the area by the prospect of affordable land [I am sure they were given a sweet deal]. My question would be are there any additional records or historical information that could help us trace Thomas Kelly & Michael Grant back to Ireland? If anyone else on the list has any further information regarding this I would like to see it posted. I am also posting this to several other lists in hopes of acquiring further information. I hope this helps you in your search. Loren Kelly, Kelly Motto: "God Is A Tower of Strength To Me!" My Loyalist Ancestor: Private, Israel TOMPKINS, U. E. Hello. I am new to the list, and am searching for information on my great uncle Matthew Kelly. He was born April 24, 1894 and worked for the railroad he is listed as having deceased Apr. 1981 in ILL. At one time he lived in Elkins, WV. He was adopted by Loyd and Martha Kelly, and appears in the 1900 census of Roane County with them. Great Uncle Matthew was born to Elijah and Mary Runnion. He was adopted out after Mary committed suicide. He has 2 sisters named Lydia Jane and Effie May. I have been diligently seeking information on him for several years. I WOULD DEEPLY APPRECIATE HEARING FROM ANYONE WHO IS DESCENDED FROM THIS FAMILY AND CAN PROVIDE ME WITH INFORMATION ON MY LOST UNCLE. THANK YOU, Juanita

I posted this a few weeks ago and have gotten rid of some info and have expanded on some as well.. I am inquiring about inquiring about my ancestors. The earliest facts I have are of a Peter Kelly and Mary Rowan from County Mayo, Ireland. Peter Kelly was born abt 1810-1815 and Mary Rowan was born abt 1815. They had three children: 1) Michael James b. January 6, 1845 Ireland d. August 10, 1907 Minneapolis, Minnesota. Married Anna J. Walsh on February 4, 1865 in Wisconsin, possibly Broadhead. Located in Green County Wisconsin. They had 9 children. Ellen M. born in Broadhead, Wisconsin. Michael Walsh(welch), James B Kelly, Mary agnes, Anna, Thomas, George P, Edward M., and adaline Cecilia were borth in Fertile Twp, Worth county, Iowa during the late 1800's. I am unsure as to the origins of Michael Walsh (welch) ??? could possibly be from a previous marriage ???.. 2) Ann(a) B. abt 1850 Pennsylvania d. abt 1865 3) James b. abt 1858 Illinois Married Helen ???? well that is the info that I have as far back as I have. i would like to go back farther into my irish roots if possible and clear up some of the dates. If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Chris Kelly

--part1_0.f90a839b.25a126dd_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I have decided to forward this post that I posted to several mailing lists to which I subscribe with additional information listed here. My Great-Grandfather, James KELLY, eventually moved to KENT COUNTY from GRENVILLE COUNTY, Ontario. In the Archiva Net Index to the 1871 Census of Ontario, I found him on the 1871 Census of Ontario living in Kent County as follows: "Age 33; Birthplace: ONTARIO; Religion: Methodist; Origin: IRISH; Occupation: FARMER; District: KENT (002); Sub-District: Harwich (D); Division: 2; Page: 8; Microfilm reel: C-9891; Reference: RG31 -- Statistics Canada!" This means he migrated from Grenville County, Oxford-on-Rideau Township, Ontario [Where he is on the 1861 Oxford-on-Rideau Township Leebee Census living with his father Thomas Kelly at the age of 23] sometime between 1861 & 1871 [A 10 year period]. The "Kent County, Ontario Marriage Registers 1857-1859; Volume One (1)" lists: "James KELLY, age 22 of Harwich, born Canada, s/o Thomas & Hannah, Married 04, May 1862, Rebecca TOMPKINS, age 21, of Harwich, born Canada, d/o Nathan & Rebecca. Witnesses: Richer TOMPKINS of____________.; Eliza TOMPKINS of____________. Rebecca TOMPKINS KELLY was the daughter of Nathan and Rebecca TOMPKINS. Nathan TOMPKINS [born~1796 & died~04, May, 1879 (84 y/o)) -- Rebecca TOMPKINS (born~1797 & died~02, May, 1879 (82 y/o)]. Both Nathan & Rebecca TOMPKINS are buried in Lot # 346 of Evergreen Cemetery, located in Blenheim, Harwich Township, Kent County, Ontario, Canada. Nathan TOMPKINS was the son of the aforementioned Israel TOMPKINS (born 1767, N.Y.-died-?) & at sometime (unknown) relocated from Augusta or Wolford Township in Grenville County to Kent County. Nathan TOMPKINS is found listed in the Archiva Net Index to the 1871 Census of Ontario as follows: "TOMPKINS, NATHAN; Sex: Male; Age: 75; Birthplace: ONTARIO; Religion: Wesleyan Methodist; Origin: ENGLISH; Occupation: FARMER; District: KENT (002); Sub-district: Harwich (D); Division: 3; Page: 72; Microfilm reel: C-9891; Reference: RG31 --- Statistics Canada. Nathan TOMPKINS served in 1828-2nd Reg't Grenville Militia, O.C. 5, November, 1818. From a list of Veterans of the War of 1812 who gathered to receive their pensions from "Veterans of 1812" on Page # 4: V. 12--5: At Chatham, the following veterans answered to their names:---Nathan Tompkins --- Am 79; was in Captain Burritt's Company as a private; Col. Fraser commanded; enlisted in Rideau in 1812; was at the taking of Ogdensburg and several skirmishes; was not wounded; have no medal or papers; was discharged at Prescott in 1813." Nathan & Rebecca TOMPKINS had the following children [There are probably more]: 1.Alexander TOMPKINS (born~30, May, 1830; Perth-Lanark County) On the 1871 Census of Ontario, he was listed as living in Harwich Township in Kent County. 2.Rebecca TOMPKINS (Same As Above-My Great Grandmother-Married James KELLY) 3.Phoebe TOMPKINS (Information Unknown-Baptized on February 12, 1825 in Marlborough 4.Elizabeth TOMPKINS (born~1830 in New York; died ~January of 1892} James KELLY [born~09, September, 1838 in Burritts Rapids; died~07, February, 1922 (Age 83) in El Dorado, Kansas] & Rebecca TOMPKINS KELLY [born~abt. 1838; died~abt. May of 1923 in El Dorado, Kansas (Age 82)] had the following children: 1. Electah Hannah KELLY PRESSNELL [born~14, February, 1862 in Kent County, Ontario; died~13, March, 1915 (Age 52) in Findlay, Ohio.]. 2. Nathan Tompkins KELLY {My Grandfather) [born~24, August, 1867 in Blenheim, Harwich Township, Kent County, Ontario, Canada; died~06, December, 1934 (Age 67) in Artesia, New Mexico]. 3.Orpha Jane KELLY BRANDENBERG [born~06, June, 1875 in Kent County, Ontario; died~09. September, 1917 in Findlay, Ohio]. 4. There may have been another son, John KELLY [Information found in family bible--Possible date of death was 23, January, 1899]. The United States Census of 1900 in Findlay, Ohio, lists Nathan Tompkins KELLY & James & Rebecca KELLY as attaining the status of naturalized U. S. citizens in 1879. Sorry to post this to both lists, but my great grandfather, PATRICK KELLEY, came from Ireland as Patrick KELLY. Somewhere along the line he changed it to Kelley. I'm looking for relatives and family info on his siblings. Patrick came from Iron Mills (Glenflesk, Killarney) Co. Kerry, in 1879 (to US). His brother, JOHN, settled in Summit Co. Utah, and then Chicago, IL. His brother, DENNIS, settled in Hadley, MA. I have been told recently, by my fathers cousin of Ireland, that the other siblings went to Salt Lake City, Chicago and Milwaukee, WI. The others, which I have no info on other than names and birthdates, were BERNARD, MARGARET, and JEREMIAH KELLY. If any of the above sounds like a link to me, please get in touch, and we can compare notes. Thank you.

I have just made a major upgrade of my web pages, at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~joneall/ The principal addition is in the "standard" genealogy section, where I've put up family journals for my most important families, all Quaker ones to a great extent, the families O'Neall, Ellis, Kelly and Hutton. Each one is accompanied by a bibliography of sources. To reach these pages directly, go to http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~joneall/ All these files were generated by the genealogy data base program I have found most useful and versatile, The Master Genealogist (or TMG). I have also added a list of links that I have found particularly useful and interesting . Explanations are given of the method for seeking approval from living people before posting them (or leaving them out). I would be happy to exchange any further information on the families posted, as well as to enter into contact with other descendants of these families whom I may not already know. I am also open to correction. ;-) I would like to take one (more) occasion to thank all those who have helped me with this (unfinished) project. Their names are all on the relevant bibliographies. Parents: THOMAS & HANNAH (Rel-METH) WIT: WM & CATHERINE ROSE!}" My Great Grandfather, James KELLY & his family, including my Grandfather [Nathan Tompkins KELLY - At the age of 14.], immigrated to the United States from Canada in 1879 & eventually wound up in Findlay, Ohio, where my father [Luther James KELLY] was one of the first born generation of Americans in my Kelly-Line. And as they say; the rest is History. Back in July of this year, I received an e-mail from Dorothy Howe SURI, who e-mailed me regarding the fact that she was a fifth generation descendant of Naomi KELLY Howe Morgan, born February 8, 1845 in Burritts Rapids, Grenville County, Ontario, Canada. At that time, I was unaware of that my Great Great Grandparents had a daughter named Naomi, born at about this time. I suspect that this Naomi KELLY may be the same Naomi KELLY that is related to Dorothy Howe SURI. However, I misplaced her e-mail address & have been unable to contact her. If anyone knows Dorothy Howe Suri's [Dotsuri] e-mail address, or if you can assist me in contacting her please e-mail me.
