Hello Mary: A while back I joined your researcher list on your website whenever I began my search in Kent County Ontario where my Grandfather was born. Subsequently, I traced James KELLY [My G-Grandfather] back to Burritts Rapids, Oxford-on-Rideau township, Grenville County, Upper Canada where he was born to Thomas & Hannah KELLY in 1838. Perhaps I need to update with you! <grin> On your website I discovered "My Kelly's" mentioned in the section where you abstracted marriage records from the Ontario Marriage Films of KELLY Marriages performed in 1873; 1874; & 1875, held at the L.D.S. Library & this is where I came up with the marriage records of Maria KELLY (1875); Martha KELLY(1873) & Jerusha KELLY (1874). Is this Maria KELLY: Cert. # 007 325...of KEMPTVILLE possibly the Maria Fleming you mentioned? She was also listed as a witness at her sister, Martha KELLY's marriage to Edmund FULCHER on 09-01-73 Cert. # 007 325...of KEMPTVILLE. You state that your KELLY family was a Catholic Family living in a predominately Protestant area. I have wondered about this for some time. Thomas KELLY [Born somewhere in Ireland in 1801] is listed on the 1871 Census of Ontario as being of the Church of England; Anglican faith. With the exception of three (3) of his children, who were listed as Methodist, I am not sure if the other children were Protestant; or not. If they were all of the same faith, it puzzles me why the children were not buried in the same Christ Church Anglican Cemetery in Burritts Rapids as Thomas and Hannah KELLY. I have been unable to locate any of the other fourteen (14) children's burial sites or gravemarkers. Is it possible that your KELLY's and mine are inter-married or even blood relatives, despite their religious convictions? Most of our KELLY's lived in the same general area. Perhaps the family was divided in its faith. Loren Kelly
Hello Shirley: As I indicated, my grandfather Nathan Tompkins KELLY was born in Blenheim, Kent County, Ontario, Canada on 24, August, 1867 to James KELLY and Rebecca TOMPKINS KELLY. His mother Rebecca TOMPKINS KELLY was the daughter of Nathan TOMPKINS who was the son of Israel TOMPKINS [A United Empire Loyalist]. So I am a descendant through my grandfather's Maternal TOMPKINS LINE. My TOMPKINS' family line came OUT of New York. Israel TOMPKINS was from Stillwater, New York and I am attempting to trace his ancestors [Beginning with his parents-Who are unknown to me]. He was a well-known United Empire-Loyalist of English extraction and a native of America. >From "BEERS COMMEMORATIVE" published Toronto, 1904; "The paternal grandparents {of Reuben A. Tompkins}, Israel and Rebecca (Brown) Tompkins were of English extraction, but natives of New York, and were well known as United Empire Loyalists. Mr. Tompkins was in the British Army, and was captured while carrying dispatches. He settled in Canada. One of his cousins, Hon. Daniel D. Tompkins, served two terms as Governor of the state of New York." >From the "SECOND REPORT OF THE BUREAU OF ARCHIVES FOR THE PROVINCE OF ONTARIO"; Toronto, 1905, by Alexander Fraser, it states: "N. C. February 9. (49) 1091. Claim of ISRAEL TOMPKINS, late of Saratoga. Claimt. says: He was at Isle au Noix in the Fall of '83. Is a nat. of A. Lived at Stillwater. Joined Genl. Burgoyne. Served all the war. Produces Major Jessup's Certificate to his services. Had a Cow and a calf on the lands of John Aurie. Claimt. had the land on shares with him. Had Corn & Flax 7 c sown. Claimt. came away before harvest." This is found on page 1108 of this report. >From "Biographical Sketches of Loyalists of the American Revolution" bu Gregory Palmer on page 867 it states: "TOMPKINS OR TOMKINS, ISRAEL AO 12/109/294 Of New York, A native of America, Tompkins lived at Stillwater. He joined Burgoyne at Fort Edward and served in Jessup's Corps for the rest of the war. Tompkins settled afterwards at Sorel Quebec and estimated his loss at 18 {Pounds} Sterling." >From "American Loyalist Claims, Vol. 1"......Abstracted from the Public Record Office Audit Office Office Series 13, Bundles 1-35 and 27 by Peter Wilson Coldham, F. A. S. G. states: "TOMPKINS, ISRAEL (X), Saratoga, Albany Co., N. Y. With five other men, escaped to join Burgoyne's Army at Fort Edward; served in Maj. Jessup's Corps until the capitulation, when he came to Canada and served with Corps until their reduction. Was honorably discharged though he has not got his certificate. Memorial 25 Feb. 1786 Sorel. Claim; Cow and crops. (AO 13/16/68-70)" >From L. D. S. microfiche #6010866, "2000 Loyalist Names and Families from the Haldimand Papers," by Keith Fitzgerald states: "Israel Tompkins alone from New York, farmer, leased lands. Member Kings Rangers, Rogers Rangers. Israel Tompkins' wife, Rebecca BROWN TOMPKINS was born about 1770." >From L. D. S. film # 1430819 CLP from Rg 1 L3, Vol 511. T misc/30, 1788 -1794, reel c-2842, states as follows: "The petition of Rebecca Tompkins of Augusta, daughter to Jesse Brown, humbly showeth that your petitioner was a soldier in Major Jessup's Corps of Loyal Rangers and joined the royal standard prior to the year 1793...undated." The folder says: "The petition of Israel Tompkins wife...county of Grenville." Further research shows that Israel Tompkins had a patent in the township of Augusta in Grenville County, Ontario, Canada that was dated July 15, 1797 on Concession 9; Lot 2; 200 acres. On 01, May, 1802 he is found living in Wolford Township in Grenville County, Ontario, Canada and is found to be living there up through the 1817 Census of Wolford township. After 1817 Israel TOMPKINS seems to disappear. I am unsure of where Israel TOMPKINS is buried or this date of death, but I do know it was some time after 1817 [He would have been approximately sixty years of age at this time.]. I do not know who his parents; siblings; or other relatives [Other than his cousin Daniel D. Tompkins] might be. Regarding Israel TOMPKINS date of birth: My G-G-G- Grandfather, Israel TOMPKINS, was about 25 on January 1, 1783 at Riviere du Chene, according to a Muster Roll of the Loyal Rangers {Edward Jessup, Major Commandant} which is taken from the "Rolls of the Provincial {Loyalist} Corps, Canadian Command American Revolutionary Period," prepared by Beacock Fryer and Lieutenant Colonel William A. Smy, C. D.; page 82 #6. This would make his date of birth approximately 1758. At this time he was 5' 9" tall and had 5 years & 3 months in service from America and was a private in Jessup's Corps of Loyal Rangers. Isn't it interesting how whenever you attempt to research your paternal line that you find out so much information about other lines. In this case, I was fortunate to have a Loyalist in my grandfather's maternal line. He left quite a paper trail from the Revolutionary War [1777] to about 1817. Now I wonder how I will: 1. Find the gravemarker & date of death of Israel TOMPKINS & 2. Find the ancestors (Beginning with the parents} of Israel TOMPKINS. I hope this answers your questions about Israel TOMPKINS. I will share this with several other lists to see if I can get any responses. Loren Kelly
Hello Shirley: . Thanks for your help. According to "Who's Where, A Guide To The Cemeteries of Rideau Township," edited by Jim Kennedy and produced by the Rideau Heritage Board of Publication, Township of Rideau, in 1980, Thomas KELLY [My Great Great Grandfather & the father of my Great Grandfather; James KELLY] is listed as being buried in Christ Church Anglican Cemetery Burritts Rapids with his wife, Hannah BROWN KELLY. The transcriptions on the tombstone reads..."Thomas KELLY...Died...28, April, 1891 at age 90 years, and Hannah KELLY...Died 15, March, (YEAR IS BLANK?) at age 78 years!" Why the year of death for Hannah is not on the gravemarker {It is smooth as if it was never chiseled} is a mystery to me. Thomas KELLY's place of birth was listed on the Ontario Census of 1871 as Ireland. He would have been born about 1801 somewhere in Ireland. Since he died in 1891 would I be able to get a copy of his Death Record from the Archives of Ontario? If so, what would the cost be in U.S. dollars? Also what would these records contain? Are there any other Canadian records that I could acquire which would help me discover where Thomas KELLY's birthplace was in Ireland and who his parents were? According to the 1861; 1871; & 1881 Leebee Oxford-on-Rideau township, Grenville County Census Thomas & Hannah KELLY had the following 15 children: 1. James KELLY [My Great Grandfather & their eldest son-Born in Burritts Rapids on 09, Sept., 1838] 2. Susana KELLY [Born about 1841 in Upper Canada] 3. Mary KELLY [Born abt. 1842 in U. C.] 4. Sarah KELLY [Born abt. 1843 in U. C.] 5. Elizabeth KELLY [Born abt. 1845 in U. C.] 6. Naomi KELLY [Born abt. 1847 in U. C.] 7. Kezeth KELLY [Born abt. 1848 in U. C.] 8. Maria KELLY [Born abt. 1851 in U. C.] On 22, March, 1875 married John ROSE 9. Sophia KELLY [Born abt. 1851 in U. C.] 10. Jamima KELLY [Born abt. 1853 or 1855 in U. C.] 11. Jerusha KELLY [Born abt. 1855 or 1856 in Burritts Rapids] On 04, February, 1874 married James Albert ROSE 12. Martha KELLY [Born abt. 1857 in Wolford township, Upper Canada] On 09, January, 1873 married Edmund FULCHER 13. William KELLY [Born abt. 1859 in U. C.] 14. Thomas KELLY [Born abt. 1859 or 1861 in U. C. 15. Albert KELLY [Born abt. 1863 or 1866 in Ontario] The aforementioned children are not buried in Burritts Rapids Christ Church Anglican Cemetery. I wonder where they might be? Possibly, they may be buried in Merrickville; Kemptville; or another cemetery in Burritts Rapids. But where? Are there any descendants still alive residing in or around this area? The eldest son of these 15 children born between 1838 and about1866 {A 28 year span of time} was my Great Grandfather; James KELLY. He married Rebecca TOMPKINS [Daughter of Nathan TOMPKINS {Veteran of the War of 1812} who was the Son of Israel TOMPKINS [A well-known United Empire Loyalist]. James KELLY and Rebecca TOMPKINS were the parents of my Grandfather; Nathan Tompkins KELLY who was born 24, August, 1867 in Blenheim, Kent County, Ontario. Nathan Tompkins KELLY (At about age 14); James KELLY & Rebecca TOMPKINS KELLY immigrated to the United States in 1879 and ended up in Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio where my father; Luther James KELLY [First Generation American], was born in 1907. I am also forwarding this information to several other lists in order to extend my research. I hope this answers your questions. Loren Kelly

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear on how to write to the Massachusetts Sate Archives for an index search in the Boston port passenger lists. You need to know the immigration year- I addressed my letter to 'Dear Sir or Madam" and then I provided as much information as I knew on my ancestors that may help them to identify the right people. I did that by giving their full names, birth years and their ages at the time of immigration, what country they were emigrating from, and why I thought they might have come through Boston. I kept it very simple. Just write to the address I sent in my previous post. There is no fee involved.
(I'm sorry that I've decided to post this to 4 lists.) Someone, on one of the lists I belong to , told how to request a lookup in the card index of the State Passenger List for the Port of Boston at the Massachusetts State Archives. I followed their instructions on how to request the lookup, knowing the year of immigration, and I provided as much pertinent info as I could . I sent my letter in on 2/20/00 to the Massachusetts State Archives, 220 Morrissey Blvd., Boston, MA 02125, and I promptly received an answer on 2/29/00. I want to thank the person who sent in the instrucions on writing to the MSA. I'm sorry I've misplaced your message, and can't thank you directly. The MSA sent me a listing of all the KELLY's of the same first names as I had listed in my letter and with the same immigration year. Their Query form lists the name, age, sex, date, ship name, occupation, birthcountry, residence , list number, and 'arrivewith'. The researcher told me to contact her if I saw a match (I didn't) or if I required more information. There was no charge for this. I have posted the 10 that I received from MSA below. A star (*) means no info provided for that category. I don't have any other information than what I have sent here. I hope this will help someone with their research. The year 2000 is a Census Year. Most of the census will be taken by mail, so after you have filled out your census form why not make a copy of it and file with your important papers. Then your family will not have to wait 72 years to learn about you." Got this from another list and thought this was an excellant idea...just thought I'd pass it on!!!!!
