Just got this Obituary in the mail today......Could be my John but after talking to someone at the Cemetery they were able to tell me that his wife Leila is buried next to him. Maybe a "second" wife? And his daughter was "Margaret" The John I am looking for had Daughter named Mae. Could that be short for Margaret? I was thinking Mae was short for "Mary". Strange... his wife's name was not mentioned in the obit. THE DAILY TIMES: CHATTANOOGA, TENN THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1923 (page 3) John L. Kelly, aged 64 years, pioneer resident and well known business man, died in a local hospital at 2:25 yesterday afternoon, following an illness of only about three days' duration. His body was removed to O'Donohue's mortuary and prepared for burial. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Margaret, of this city; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Mitchell; a nephew, John Mitchell, and a niece, Mrs. Ray Dowling, all of Gadsden, Ala. Mr. Kelly was a native of this city, and for many years had been engaged in the plumbing business with Reuben Harris, on Chestnut Street, under the firm name of Kelly-Harris Plumbing company. Funeral services will be held at SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic church at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning, with the Rev. Father Francis T. Sullivan officiating, and interment will follow in Mount Olivet cemetery. The following close friends of Mr. Kelly have been requested to serve as pallbearers, and will meet at O'Donohue's mortuary at 8:45 tomorrow morning: L.M. Pindell, Alex Scott, Fred Frawley, Ed Hale, Charles East, Ralph Allison, Pat Neligan and Reuben Harris. The body of Mr. Kelly will remain at O'Donohue's mortuary at Fountain square, until the hour of the services.

I though this info may be of interest. I found it in "GENEALOGIES OF VIRGINIA FAMILIES From the William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine" Vol III. Pg 251 - KELLY OF WESTMORELAND CO. - Bible Record of Thomas Conway Kelly b VA Dec 25. 1799: This record was submitted by his son J. Y. Kelly Attorney at Law, Georgetown, KY. Alexander Kelly and wife Elizabeth had son James Kelly b 12 Mar 1737. James m Susan Wilson b 3 Oct 1741. Children were John Kelly, b 3 Apr 1761, Spicer Kelly, Donathan (may be A.D.K.), Molly (may have married Joseph Wilson, Sr.), James Y. Kelly b 12 Sep 1765, Alexander D. Kelly (may have been Donathan) James and Susan first son, John Kelly b 3 Apr 1761, m 1st wife Jane Payne b 31 Aug 1760. Children were Fanny, John P., George P., Peter C., Jane P., Alexander D., William T., Elizabeth Kelly. John m 2nd wife Dinah Conway b 11 May 1773. Children were James W., Susan W., Richard P., Thomas C., Spicer W., Mary Ann, Henry W. Kelly. James and Susan also had son James Y. Kelly b 12 Sep 1765. James m Nancy Neale. Children were Susan Kelly m Boulware, Sally m Sheeley, James Kelly, Nancy Kelly m George P. Kelly, Elizabeth Kelly m V. Rogers, Penelope Kelly m Thomas C. Kelly, Spicer and John Kelly who died in Louisiana in 1837 and supposed to have been in the war of Texas Independence, when Santa Anna was captured year 35, 6 or 7. He enlisted in Louisville KY. J. Y. Kelly also provided the following information with the bible record. "My father said and I so recorded it that : Alexr Kelly emigrated at an early day from Wales and settled at Jamestown, VA (either he or his parents); his son James who married a Wilson settled in Westmorland County, VA, and died in that county. I have the impression that I have heard my father speak of Alexr once living in Maryland, but am not certain. James Y. Kelly, son of James and Susan Kelly, emigrated to KY about 1800. I learn that he was living in KY from a letter dated 25 July 1802 from Alexr D. Kelly to him; also in 1825 a letter written by one Spicer Wilson to his "Dear Nephew." So I presume Spicer Wilson married a daughter of Alexr & Elizabeth Kelly. Alexr D. Kelly writes under date 20 July 1825 to his brother James Y. Kelly, stating that they were the only two left out of a numerous family." Hope this helps sort out some of those Kellys. Some of the above is ambigous, but interesting. Jean- Wonder how far flung that Kelly clan was? I am working on one branch close to the branch you cite. Kathy Kelly referred me last year to the LDS information about the christening of three sons of Patrick and Mary Kelly at St. Paul Protestant Episcopal Church in Baltimore. They were: Benjamin b. 1731, Mordecai b. 1734, Patrick b. 1742. Kathy suspected Patrick had a brother named Benjamin whose son, Patrick was christened at the same church in 1749. Another family, sons of Thomas Kelly, moved from Baltimore to Montgomery County, MD, then to Christian County, KY, about 1810. Their names were Benjamin, Joseph and Thomas. Mordecai Kelly married Mary Hines in Baltimore 19 Nov 1757. Beal Kelly was among the first settlers of KY, moving from MD to VA and finally to Boonesborough in 1778. Beal's Revolutionary War pension file says he was born in Baltimore 11 Dec 1756. According to the Clark County Tax Lists, Beal is still in the Boonesborough neighborhood in 1804. Mordecai Kelly got a 500 acre grant on Stoners Creek in (then in Fayette, later in Clark) in 1785. Mordecai, Greenberry and Beal appear together on the 1796 Clark Tax list. That was Greenberry's first appearance on the list. Greenberry is on the list again in 1797, then in 1804 through 1809. In 1814, he reappears, living with Mary, the widow of Mordecai Kelly. The 1820 census of Robertson County, TN, shows Beal, Greenberry, Benjamin and John Kelly in the same neighborhood, with Kenady a short distance away. The Beal of Boonesborough, Clark and Robertson was the same man. Your Greenberry, b. 1781, would have been too young to have been on the 1796 and 1797 Clark tax lists, but he could have been the Greenberry living with Mordecai's widow. Are you confused? I am! He is in Panola County, MS where my ggrandmother Mittie Lee Kelly was born in 1872. The other children I have are E. C. (female) and Della. Lawrence & Martha (Smith) KELLY in Northumberland County, PA. 1775-1800 They are first found in White Deer Township - Tax records 1775 & 1780. Later in Buffalo Twp., Turbutt Twp., and Chillesquaque Twp. John Sr., George A, Letty and Christopher KELLY and their families left Franklin County, Georgia making a hazardous crossing of Creek territory to the community of Hazel Green in northern Madison County, Alabama in 1813. John Sr's family consisted of John Jr., George, William, James M. and Hampton W. KELLY. George A's family included wife Sarah Ann KELLEY and son Russel J.. Letty KELLY married R.F. LEE. Christopher's family at time of move included wife Elizabeth ALLEN. They had children Allen, Larkin A., Alphonso and Russell. Descendants of Larkin and Russell can still be found in the Madison County area. James M. KELLY married Anna AMONET and moved to Marion County, TN in 1828. Some descendants moved to MO, AR and TX (early 1900s).........Ed

KELLY brothers John Sr, George A., and Christopher received head right and bounty claims in Franklin and Washington Counties from 1783 thru 1810. They were apparently in the Rev. War. They had a sister Letty and may have had a brother William. John Kelly Sr. had children John Jr, George, William, James M, and William Kelly who migrated to northern Alabama in 1813. Christopher married an ALLEN and also went to Alabama. Does anyone recognize this family? They may have come from Newbury SC. I need to identify parents, etc. ........Ed

Hello, If you have a KELLY ancestor that lived in Eastern half of Pennsylvania before 1784, I would like to hear from you and learn more about your ancestor. Maybe my family is connected to yours. My forth great grandfather is LAWRENCE KELLY born about 1740 in Pennsylvania and married MARTHA SMITH on April 8, 1767 in Pennsylvania. From 1775-1800 they lived in Northumberland County Pennsylvania. I do not know where they were living before 1775. I do know they were in the eastern half of Pennsylvania. Possibly Lancaster, Cumberland, or York County. If you feel there is a possibility that your KELLY ancestor maybe from the same location and time please contact me.
