Jerry Kelley was born Aug. 7.1846 in Detroit, MI, died Jan. 17.1917 in IN. His parents, according to his account, came as immigrants thru Canada, to Detroit, then to possibly a place in IN, then on to Ottumwa, Iowa, where Jerry enlisted Civil War. We have war records. We have no identification of his parents. Interestingly among his children, first born was Lafayette, Dec 14,1873-May10 1890. No offspring. Wondering where that name came from, both Jerry and Lafayette. Then I read mention of a Lafayette in the Benjamin line. Was that only significant because of the Frenchman, or was it in the family? Still wondering if Jerry might be a Jeremiah, but the trail has grown cold. Do these names/dates match any out there? Shirley Kelley
Sorry I'm behind a bit as I started answering this then got side tracked for a week or so. The 1850 census for Marion in Putnam County Indiana (page 466) has a Jerry Kelley age 4 born in Michigan. His parents are James Kelley age either 28 or 38 and Mary age 28 or 38 (I can't read the handwriting easily)--both parents born in Ireland. Others in the household are William age 14, born in Ireland, and Ellen age 1, born in Michigan. Sorry James and Mary Kelley are such common names:( IN 1860 Jerremiah Kelley age 13 (born 1846) is found in Floyd in Putnam County Indiana. His birthplace is given as Indiana but errors in birthplace and date are common in census records. He appears to be living in the household of David Wilkinson, a farmer age 33. There are several other Wilkinsons in the household. There is no occupation given for Jerremiah suggesting that he is a relative or some kind of ward and not a hired laborer. I didn't find him in 1870 but in 1880 he is with his wife Mary and their son Lafayette age 6 in Posy County, IN.
