Hi Dottie, It is a good idea to Subscribe to both the KELLEY and the KELLY List. In early 1800's and before spelling was not a high priority. Few people could read or write. The Militia Captain and the Tax Collector determined how your name was spelled. In the 1800 Tax List for Jackson Co., Ga. the "Kelly" families were all listed as Kelley. When their District was included in Clarke Co., Ga in 1802 they were all listed as Calley. In the 1802 Tax List for Clarke Co., Ga., 3 of thes families were listed as Calley and 2 families were listed as Kelly. In the 1806 List some of these same families were listed as Kelley. My Greatgrandfather Oliver Perry Kelly, born in 1833 had 6 sons. In public records four of them were listed as Kelly and 2 were listed as Kelley. Their descendants retain that spelling today. None of them know why. The way the Tax Collector chose to spell your name doesn't change your DNA. If you haven't recruited one of your Male Kelley/Kelly relatives to participate in the Kelley/Kelly Surname DNA Study I would encourage you to do so. Kelly who married a Nancy Williams born about 1827 in Kentucky? This couple had two children Sarah Margaret b. about 1846 and William L. born about 1846. Jeremiah (John)died before 1851 and that is all I know about the Kelly family. I do know more about Nancy Williams family, however. Dottie in Calif.
