From The Chronicle, Bound Brook, NJ Friday July 9, 1897 Baseball Somersets too strong for us The game at Somerville on Monday afternoon, between the Athletics and the Somersets, was an interesting one, notwithstanding the fact that Bound Brook again met defeat. This was expected by the Bound Brook contingent, but all things considered the boys put up a fair game. The morning game at Plainfield, under a boiling sun, had taken all the vim out of them, but they gave the spectators, who turned out in large numbers, value received for their money. Winn, of Plainfield, pitched a creditable game, but the five errors behind him were costly. He also gave free passages to first base to five batsmen. A home run, four two baggers and two singles, was the extent of the Somersets’ batting. McLaughlin was touched up for a three-base hit, five two-baggers and five singles. The score: 5 to 9.
