There is a large number of descendants, many of whom are looking for J. J.'s parents. So far, we are stymied. We have a 12 marker DNA match with a descendant of a Samuel Kelly who was born in 1779 in North Carolina. There are a lot of non-Kelly matches too, so we are not certain of the significance of the match. In addition to James J. Kelly whom I introduced in an earlier post, my third great grandmother was Martha (Patsey) Kelly. Patsey Kelly married William Dorsey in 1826 in Burke County, NC. I am pretty sure she was born in South Carolina. William and Martha Kelly moved from Burke County through Macon County, NC and eventually ended up in Pickens County, SC. There are number of Kelly families in the public record. Some of whom even followed the same migration pattern. However, we have not been able to assign her to a Kelly family as yet. Martha and William's son Elisha encountered some sort of problem after the Civil War and changed his name to Harvey Kelley and moved from Pickens (or then Oconee) County to Cumberland County, TN. We have enough circumstantial evidence, family stories, and DNA matches to support this name change and move. However, we still have no idea what event precipitated it.
