I am looking for an adoption record for my great grandfather, Harlan Bradbury Kelley. Harlan was born on August 2, 1897, in Wolfeboro, NH, son of Frederick A.W., and Lavinia Kelley. However, something happened to the family between 1897, and 1900; in the 1900 census, Lavinia is back living with her family (the Rodericks) in Swampscott, MA, son Harlan is still in Wolfeboro, NH, where he is being raised by a woman named Lizzie Drew (later Lizzie Berry), and Frederick is nowhere to be found. The Federal Census for 1900 lists two-year-old Harlan as a boarder with a woman named Lizzie Drew, a widow, who later married a man named William Berry. He is listed in the 1910 census as a boarder of William and Lizzie Berry. (Conversely, his parents are living in Waterlivett, NY, as listed in the 1910 census). Lizzie Berry adopted Harlan on April 2, 1918, when he was 20 years old, probably for reasons of inheritance. Query--can any one offer any ideas or assistance as to how I might be able to obtain a copy of the adoption record? Obviously, all persons involved have long since gone on to the Great Beyond!!
