In 1757, Miles Kelly, newly arrived in London from Ireland and poor, according to his testimony, was convicted by the Old Bailey of stealing a coat. His punishment was transportation to America. His passage was on the ship Thetis, which arrived in Annapolis in December 1757. I don't know if he survived the voyage, and if he did, what happened to him after landing. I've read about convict servants and know that they were sold to local merchants, but none of the literature offers direction or advice on how to research these convicts. I believe this man may be my ancestor based solely on his name. My great-great grandfather was Miles Kelly who was born in 1807 and died 1901 in Jones County, Georgia. He married Martha Emerson in Jones County in 1833. His father, Samuel Kelly, came to Jones County in 1826. Family lore has it that my ancestors came up the Savannah River to Raytown in Wilkes County, Georgia. Martha Emerson's family was in Maryland before coming to Georgia, so there may be a link between them and the original Miles Kelly, but I haven't found any connection. I need advice and help on how to find out what happened to the original Miles Kelly once he landed in Annapolis.
