Looking for information on this Kelly line of Paterson, N.J. Peter Kelly arrived in US, probably New York City) from Desertmartin, Ireland c. 1848-49. He was born in 1827 and died in April,1880. On his death certificate, his father is listed as Terrence. He worked in the steel mills in Paterson and later became a grocer. Peter married Margaret McGoldrick, daughter of Timothy and Mary McGoldrick, on November 19,1854 at St. Johns Cathedral. He became an Alderman (city councilman) in Paterson in 1870. He resided on Mill Street, as did most of his children in later years. Peter and Margaret had six children: John Francis Kelly, b. Mar. 3, 1859, d. April 13, 1908 was a professional baseball player between 1879 and 1884. He played for the Cleveland Blues, Baltimore Orioles, Phil. Quakers, Cinncinatti Outlaw Reds, and Washington, Nationals. He was known during his baseball days as: "Father John," Honest John," and, "Kick" Kelly. He came back to Paterson and opened a saloon, the Main Street Cafe, which he later operated with two of his brothers. John was single when he died. Margaret Kelly, b. 1865 in Paterson and d. April 15, 1916 in the City. She married James J. Curran who became Paterson City Comptroller. They had three children: James Jr., Grace, and John. Thomas Edward Kelly, b. Jan. 17, 1867, d. July 1907 in the City. "Tommie Eddie" had his leg amputated due to an accident as a child, when a train ran over it. He wore a wooden leg. He was into a third term as a City Alderman when he died of Tuberculosis. He operated the Main Street Cafe with John. He had recently married a Miss Wall. They had no children. Joseph Kelly is my grandfather. He was born in Feb. 1871 and died in Jan. 1917. He married Ellen Faulkner, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Faulkner, on July 1, 1896 at St. Johns Cathedral. Joseph was, like his father and brothers, politically active and headed the Joseph Kelly Association. He worked in the silk trade in Paterson, and later joined his brother in operating the Main Street Cafe. He was the sole owner of the saloon when he died. In his obituary, he is called, "The Boniface of Main Street." Joseph and Ellen had two children: Lillian and Margaret. Lillian married Louis B. Moore in 1924. Margaret married J. Albert Bailey a few years later. Peter Kelly Jr., b. in 1874, was the youngest son and Martha Kelly, b. in 1876, the youngest daughter of Peter and Margaret Kelly. I have no information on them. A family cousin, John Joseph Kelly and his family, still resides in Desertmartin, Ireland.
