burford@theriver.com I am posting this to the list for all of you that have Giles KELLY bca 1833 in KY listed as son of Michael and Susan PATTERSON, Grayson Co, KY. Some of you folks have a transcript of the 1850 Grayson Co. KY census, and probably tons of family group sheets, that are listing Giles KELLY bca 1833 KY, his siblings, Elijah KELLY bca 1830 KY, and Catharine KELLY bca 1835 KY as being the children of Michael and Susan PATTERSON. (dwelling #313). They are not PATTERSON'S. They are Elizabeth KELLY'S bca 1799, KY, children. Elizabeth KELLY is listed immediately above them on the census. The two little lines to the right of their first name indicate that their surname is the same as the surname immediately above it. When looking at the census, those two little lines (ditto) under the surname above them mean 'same as above'. These ditto marks were used by the enumerator for the 1850 Grayson Co. KY census to keep him from having to write the same name and place of birth multiple times. This is why it is wise to do your own research, and whenever possible verify, verify, and verify your sources of information. Rosie
