Hi everybody, Anybody a Lorenzo Dow Kelley who was born about 1846? We found one, he's not ours, so thought we'd post what we know in case someone else can claim him. We do have a Lorenzo Dow Kelley in our family, who has a father named John, but this one isn't ours. We had thought he might be and my cousin visited the national archives to copy his military and pension records. He was several pages into the pension record when he realized that the names he was looking at didn't mesh with the rest of what we knew. He says he kept the pages he copied and will send them to me to send on to anyone else who might belong to this guy, if I can find someone. The Lorenzo Dow Kelley whose papers were copied was 18 years old when he joined the 10th IN Volunteer Infantry, Co. B. He died of measles in 1864 in either Evansville, IN, Jeffersonville, IN, or Louisville KY. He is identified as dying in the hospital at each of these places on various documents. His father, John P Kelley was in Wisconsin at the time of his son's death, so an uncle, Henry Wert, picked up his personal effects. Later, his aging father applied for a pension based on his son's sacrifice, being so poor he was on county welfare at the time. In those documents it is said that John P. Kelley was born about 1815, was married in Ohio in 1840, lost his first wife in 185i5 and remarried in 1856. He fathered 4 other children besides Lorenzo Dow Kelley, and died in 1897. If these papers can help you with your research, let me know, and I will be happy to ask my cuz to pass them on to me, so I can pass them along to you.
