Our 126 Test Results represent 82 unique, unrelated, KELLY/KELLEY/O'KELLY Families. This means that when Surnames were adopted in Ireland about 900 AD that 82 different Families adopted the Surname KELLY (Gaelic Equivalent). DNA Testing is the only practical method to determine from which KELLY Clan we descend. Since there are a large number of Unique KELLY Clans we are going to have to get a large number of participants to find matches for those of us who haven't yet found a match. Studies done by Geneticist at Trinity University in Dublin. indicate that Murphy and Kelly are the two most popular Surnames in Ireland. However, DNA Studies carried out by the University indicate that the large number of people with Surname Kelly is due to multiple family founders as opposed to a single patrilineal line with a large number of descendants. Please contact your fellow KELLY/KELLEY/O'KELLY researchers and encourage them to participate. There are 62 of us who are still without a match. I've "rescued" two old photographs both identified as members of the MATHER Family. The first is a photograph of Susan MATHER SNOW. The photograph was taken at the Lesure & Prouty Studio in Brattleboro, Vermont. It appears to have been taken in the 1890's with Susan likely in her 50's at the time it was taken. The second is a photograph identified as William MATHER which was taken at the Lesure & Dunklee Studio in Brattleboro, VT and is dated 1890 with William appearing to be in his 50's or 60's at the time. There is also some handwriting on the back of William's photograph was I am not able to read however it appears to be "VT" along with some additional letters. Based on limited research and thanks to a MATHER Family Researcher I was able to gather the following information regarding these siblings from the MATHER Family: Both are children of Dan MATHER and Almira MILLER. Susan J. MATHER b. 11 Dec 1828 in Marlboro, VT, married Flint W. SNOW on 5 Apr 1854 in Marlboro. William MATHER was b. 22 Nov 1833 in Marlboro and died 1907 in Brattleboro, VT. William married Demaris Starr KELLEY on 7 May 1856 in Marlboro and together they had six children including, George W.; Ida Almira; Clarence E.; Clara B.; Minnie J.; and Freddie S. MATHER born between 1858 and 1875, all in Marlboro. Susan and William's siblings included, Eunice; Almira; Helia Ann; Marietta; Mary M.; Hannah; Miller Dan; and David MATHER all born between 1819 and 1836 in Marlboro. I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
I'd like to thank all the wonderful people on the Rootsweb lists that I belong to. With your help, a birth record for my Lizzie Kelley was found for Hadley, MA (thanks Monica!), and I got some good information on other records to search for. I guess most of us know that the US censuses aren't perfect, but they sure are pretty important. Good luck to all of you. ~Patsy~ ----- Original Message ----- From: PatsiGen To: Kelly List ; kelley@rootsweb.com Cc: Kerry List Sent: Wednesday, February 06, 2008 1:03 PM Subject: NY Birth Records Hi all. I'm hoping someone could help me on the next step I should take to try to find a birth record. My KELLY ancestors all emigrated from Glenflesk, Co. Kerry between the years of 1870 and 1883. I believe one of the first ones to arrive in America was DENNIS KELLY (also went by KELLEY). He married Ellen McCARTHY from Mineville, NY, and their only daughter, Lizzie, was born in June 1888, according to the 1900 US Census. This census also says she was born in New York. So, I believe Dennis was in New York, and met his wife in NY. Dennis and his family eventually moved to Hadley, Massachusetts. Dennis died in June 1898, and his will stated that his daughter would be sent to Mineville, NY and be under guardianship of her uncle, Rev. FLORENCE MCCARTHY. Sure enough, Mineville is where I found his wife and daughter in the 1900 census mentioned above. Ellen and Lizzie were living with the Rev. Florence McCarthy. Lizzie's birth year was confirmed to be around 1888 by the fact that her father died in June 1898, and she was "11" in the June 1900 census. I had sent a request for her birth certificate copy to the New York State Department of Health Vital Records Section early in 2007. I paid for a 3-year search. I've just received word that they could not find her birth record. One of my questions is, would it be unusual for a child not to have registered birth record? I realize that the census information is not always accurate, but because Ellen McCarthy can be found in Mineville, NY in the 1880 and 1900 censuses, I am sure Dennis must have met her in NY. I found a Dennis Kelley in NY in the 1880 census, but he lived in another county. The 1890 census records burned in a fire, so I cannot track Dennis' whereabouts after 1880, except that I know he lived in Hadley, MA next to my great-grandfather, his brother. Dennis was buried in Hadley, but Ellen and Lizzie's names are not mentioned on his headstone. I do plan to ask the Town of Hadley to do a search for Lizzie's (Elizabeth Ann) birth record, but I don't expect to find it there. I do not know what happened to Ellen and Lizzie after they were in the 1900 census (or when they went to Mineville in 1898). So, does anyone know of another way to go about this? Any ideas on how to find a birth record for Lizzie? Thanks, ~Patsy~ Researching KELLY and O'DONOGHUE of the Iron Mills (aka Old Forge) area of Glen Flesk. I am looking for an adoption record for my great grandfather, Harlan Bradbury Kelley. Harlan was born on August 2, 1897, in Wolfeboro, NH, son of Frederick A.W., and Lavinia Kelley. However, something happened to the family between 1897, and 1900; in the 1900 census, Lavinia is back living with her family (the Rodericks) in Swampscott, MA, son Harlan is still in Wolfeboro, NH, where he is being raised by a woman named Lizzie Drew (later Lizzie Berry), and Frederick is nowhere to be found. The Federal Census for 1900 lists two-year-old Harlan as a boarder with a woman named Lizzie Drew, a widow, who later married a man named William Berry. He is listed in the 1910 census as a boarder of William and Lizzie Berry. (Conversely, his parents are living in Waterlivett, NY, as listed in the 1910 census). Lizzie Berry adopted Harlan on April 2, 1918, when he was 20 years old, probably for reasons of inheritance. Query--can any one offer any ideas or assistance as to how I might be able to obtain a copy of the adoption record? Obviously, all persons involved have long since gone on to the Great Beyond!! Thank you all in advance. Sincerely, Erin Kelley erinsk@earthlink.net Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I don't have your Samuel at all, nor any of his children and not much in the way of places. Nothing on Hawkins, Caddell, Commodore, Hart, Looper, Roberts, or Castleberry either. I don't even have a William. John 1762- who married Ann Templeton possibly was born in North Carolina and may have died in either North Carolina or Kentucky. His first son John 1790- who married Elizabeth Bond apparently was born in Stokes County, North Carolina and died in Simpson County, Kentucky. His second son Joseph ca 1793- apparently was born in Virginia. He married a lady with the surname Garrison. His next two sons, Thomas ca 1794- and Robert 1797- apparently were both born in North Carolina and died in Missouri. Daughters Nancy and Minerva were born in North Carolina and Kentucky. I guess I'm not sure this is your family because the names don't match and no one seems to have gone to Alabama. I have eight children for the John Kelley and Ann Templeton marriage and the latest birth date is for daughter Minerva in 1809. If it's the same family, then perhaps it's the next generation which would match your dates better but I don't know any of their names either. Yes, these materials are a treasure trove - and I'm still trying to find a good home for them! Wish I could be of more help but since I'm not researching this line.... Wonder what notable events took place the year your grandparents married? The Internet has many websites with timelines and calendars of events. Wikipedia not only lists events for each century but also lists events for each YEAR within each century. Within each year, events are categorized by subject. Subjects highlighted in BLUE have links that lead to information. Subjects highlight in RED are waiting for someone to contribute information (which is how Wikipedia works). For example, here is the website for 1905: 1905 - Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1905 I was curious about any notable weather events that took place that year. I clicked on Meteorology: Category: 1905 meteorology http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:1905_meteorology which provides a link to the 1905 Hurricane Season.
