    1. [KELLEY] Miles Kelly - convict servant
    2. b. a. KELLY
    3. In 1757, Miles Kelly, newly arrived in London from Ireland and poor, according to his testimony, was convicted by the Old Bailey of stealing a coat. His punishment was transportation to America. His passage was on the ship Thetis, which arrived in Annapolis in December 1757. I don't know if he survived the voyage, and if he did, what happened to him after landing. I've read about convict servants and know that they were sold to local merchants, but none of the literature offers direction or advice on how to research these convicts. I believe this man may be my ancestor based solely on his name. My great-great grandfather was Miles Kelly who was born in 1807 and died 1901 in Jones County, Georgia. He married Martha Emerson in Jones County in 1833. His father, Samuel Kelly, came to Jones County in 1826. Family lore has it that my ancestors came up the Savannah River to Raytown in Wilkes County, Georgia. Martha Emerson's family was in Maryland before coming to Georgia, so there may be a link between them and the original Miles Kelly, but I haven't found any connection. I need advice and help on how to find out what happened to the original Miles Kelly once he landed in Annapolis. Thanks, Barbara Kelly BAK226@yahoo.com ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RaymondKelly91 Surnames: KELLEY, KELLY, O'KELLY Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.kelley/5049/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Greetings to All, We now have 153 participants.132 Test Results are posted on our Website. 66 participants have a 12 Marker Match with another related participant. This consists of, 2 Groups of 7, 2 Groups of 6, 1 Group of 5, 3 Groups of 3, and 13 Groups of 2. We have 66 participants with no match. Our 132 Test Results represent 87 unique, unrelated, KELLY/KELLEY/O'KELLY Families. This means that when Surnames were adopted in Ireland about 900 AD that 87 different Families adopted the Surname KELLY (Gaelic Equivalent). DNA Testing is the only practical method to determine from which KELLY Clan we descend. Since there are a large number of Unique KELLY Clans we are going to have to get a large number of participants to find matches for those of us who haven't yet found a match. Studies done by Geneticist at Trinity University in Dublin. indicate that Murphy and Kelly are the two most popular Surnames in Ireland. However, DNA Studies carried out by the University indicate that the large number of people with Surname Kelly is due to multiple family founders as opposed to a single patrilineal line with a large number of descendants. Please contact your fellow KELLY/KELLEY/O'KELLY researchers and encourage them to participate. There are 66 of us who are still without a match. I will happily reimburse the cost of the DNA Test for the participant who matches my haplotype. 1. [KELLEY] Kelley family in Anniston / Birmingham AL in 1900-1910
    2. Mike Kelley
    3. Hello, I am searching for links and information about my Kelley line from AL in 1900 and before and after. Both spellings are commonly mixed in our family records from that time. My ggf ( George W. Kelly, born in Georgia in 1858 ) lived in Birmingham with my gf, his brothers and sister and ggf's recent new wife (4 years) Nannie in 1900 census. They had lived in Anniston in 1896 and 1898 (City Directory). The next year, 1901, my gf, George Singleton Kelley, moved to Anniston and married Miss Curtis Carter. My father Arthur and perhaps one more child were born there in the next few years, 1903 for Arthur. George Singleton Kelly (my gf) died before 1910, and I cannot find his death record or obit. My ggf, George W Kelly, is in the 1910 census as an inmate in Birmingham, Jefferson County Jail. Listed as a widower. That is the last record I have found of him. The rest of his family from the 1900 census has disappeared as well. They include GW, his (recent) wife Nannie, son George S (my gf, born 1881)., daughter Nancy E.( born 1884) and son Henry D. Kelly. Henry was born in 1892. Their actual mother was born in AL, as were all three of them. I am seeking traces of any of those mentioned, death notices, obit for any of them, incarceration and release information on my ggf, and any clues about the death of my actual ggm, name and all information unknown about her except that she was born in Alabama and so were her children. Her youngest child was born in 1892, so she must have died then or shortly thereafter, probably in Anniston or Birmingham. Thank you for any clues or information about any of these persons. I'm hoping to expand my circle of family knowledge. I have a City Directory for Anniston for 1931 and a list of cemetary occupants from Etowah County if anyone needs look-ups from there. Just drop me a line with whatever info you have. Thanks, Mike Kelley ...can't afford the gene DNA test, but hoping to be able to someday soon...

Boy, that's an old post! It was done way before I had any concrete information on my mother's family. To answer your question: all I know is that it was in "downtown Glasgow" and my father gave me the impression that that my uncle was an "unsavory character". My dad passed away Dec 26, 2002, so I can't ask him for more details. ---------- To correct some info in my post from 2000: My mother's parents were Daniel Kelly and Ellen/Helen Duff McGlone. Daniel was the son of James Kelly and Margaret Butler, both of whom immigrated from Ireland. Daniel married Helen Duff McGlone in 1916 in Gorbals, Glasgow. Daniel passed from Grave's Disease in 1936. I believe Helen passed away either in the mid 50s or "shortly after the war" (WWII). I seem to remember being told both, but the mid 50s *could* be construed as "shortly after the war". As yet I have been unable to locate a death certificate for her. There was no "Daniel Duff". I was unaware of Scottish/Irish naming conventions at the time of my original post. The Duff name came from my great-grandmother, Christina Duff, who married Felix Wilson McGlone in 1881 in Linlithgow, West Lothian.
