I have a book on The Clans and Families of Ireland. Here is what it says about Kelley's Kelly comes from the Irish O'Ceallaigh, based on the popular personal name Ceallach, which may mean either 'bright-haired' or troublesome'. The popularity of the name meant that it was incorporated into permanent surnames in between seven and ten different places, including County Meath, north Wicklow, the Antrim/Derry area, County Sligo, Galway/Roscommon, north Down and County Laois. The most prominent of these families are the O'Kellys of Ui Maine, or Hy Many, an ancient territory taking in east Galway and south Roscommon, also known simply as "O'Kelly's Country". Their pedigree takes them back to Maine Mor, first chief of the area bearing his name, who lived in the fifth century. His descendant Ceallach (died c874) was the twelfth chief, and it is from him that the surname derives. His great-great-grandson Tadhg Mor, who died at the battle of Clontarf in 1014, was the first to use the name in true hereditary fashion. Despite the loss of most of their possessions in the catastrophic wars of the seventeenth century, a loss shared with most of the rest of the Gaelic aristocracy, the succession to the position of head of the sept has continued unbroken down to the present incumbent, Walter Lionel O'Kelly of Gallagh and Tycooly, count of the Holy Roman Empire, known as the "O'Kelly", and recognized as such by the Chief Herald of Ireland. Today, Kelly and O'Kelly are almost as numerous in Ireland as Murphy, and are to be found throughout Ireland. Individuals of the name have been prominent in all speres of Irish life. The best known modern Irish sculptor was Oisin Lelly (1915-1981), Charles E Kelly (1902-1981) was one of the founders of Dublin Opinion, the most famous satirical magazine to appear in Ireland, and James O'Kelly (1845-1916) had a remarkable career as a war correspondent and Member of Parliament. They were both in the area by at least the early 1730's. They have never been tied together that I can find, but I have had the supposition for awhile that these two Kelly's were related, primarily because of their close intermarriages with the early Gorsuch famiy, the same other surnames consistently found in their lineage, same tract of land names, and a witnessing of James Kelly's will by Nicholas Kelley who was the son of William. Also, I am directly descended from James Kelly and the spelling of our last name as far back as I have ever seen on gravestones and other family documents is "Kelley". The descendants of James and William Kelley can be found in Baltimore, Frederick, Carroll, and Harford Counties in Maryland (and possibly others). Their descendants have been found in: Huntingdon County PA, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa and others. The most common surnames found have been: Gorsuch, Logsdon, Fryfogle, Mallonee, Tracey, Mays, Peregoy, Corbin, Merryman, Lane. I am directly descended as follows: James Kelly m. Prudence Logsdon (dau of William) Thomas Deye Kelley m. Charity Gorsch (dau of Lovelace) Thomas Kelley m. Catherine Fryfogle John Gorsuch Kelley m. Mary Jane Mallonee John Thomas Kelley m. Mary Jeffrey Arnet Leo Kelley m. Sophie Jeanette Mays My recent Kelley family lived at the intersection of Greenspring Avenue and Kelley Avenue off Broadway Road in Baltimore County. The land owned in that area by the Kelley family can be traced back to our first known ancestor, James Kelley who married Prudence Logsdon. If any of this sounds familiar, please email me. My grandmother, Sophie Jeanette Mays Kelley provided me with a fair amount of info back to John Gorsuch Kelley, but I have reached some absolute dead ends. Thanks!! Polly Ann was a daughter of Jesse Hair and Diery/Dicey Wilson and Georgia Ann was a daughter of John Hair and Eliza E. Butler. John and Jesse were sons of Elija Hair and a wife of unknown name who was probably an Owens. They had a half brother, Elija Hair, Jr., who was a son of Elija Hair and Celia/Silah Owens. John and Jesse were in Baker County, Georgia, in 1845 and moved one at a time to Gadsden County, Florida... and John moved to Liberty County, Florida, then back to Gadsden County, and eventually both moved to Decatur County, Georgia. I don't know where any of them were born, or where Elija, Sr., lived after 1840. Elija, Jr., was living in Jackson County, Florida, when he and John both served in Company L 1st Florida Reserve Infantry in 1863. Apparently Elija, Jr., died in that service, and his son Elija III remained in Jackson County till he crossed into Alabama and I lost track of him there. Anyway, to the point as to Kelleys... John Hair's daughter Georgia Ann Hair married Archibald "Arch" Kelly in Decatur County, Georgia, on 3 January 1889. I have photos of two of their three daughters, Ethyl and Evelyn: http://sofkee.org/haire/Ethel&EvelynKelly.htm Does Archibald connect up to Andrew Jackson Kelley (I know... I caught the difference in spelling "Kelley" vs "Kelly"... but these Hairs appear at various times as "Hair" "Hare" or "Haire". I've learned that spelling is often a difference without a distinction. FYI: Genealogy <http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2008/07/genealogy-resou. html> Resources, by State Genealogists constantly pore over old records. Of course, the biggest provider of old records in the U.S. is the U.S. government. The government even maintains a listing of significant record collections available for genealogists. The list also mentions many state and local archives. You can view the listing at: http://www.usa.gov/Citizen/Topics/History_Family/State_Genealogy.shtml. While the listing is online, most of the records listed are not yet online. You will normally have to visit the repository listed in order to view the record(s) in person. Some have been microfilmed and some of these records are now appearing on the various online sites: footnote.com, WorldVitalRecords.com, Ancestry.com, etc. ___ The previous article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright by Richard W. This is the information that my cousin and I collected. My Great Grandfather Andrew Jackson Kelley was born October 21, 1843 in Decatur County, Ga. and died January 3, 1895 in Baker County, Ga. Buried in Kelley Family Cemetery, Miller County, Ga. He married (1) Mary Ann Elizabeth Parker about 1865 in Miller County, Ga. She was born about 1846. He married (2) Polly Ann Haire about 1875, daughter of Jessee Hair and Diery. She was born about 1840 (?) in Ga. and died unknown and buried in kelley Family Cemetery, Miller Co., Ga. Notes for Polly Ann Haire: name in cemetery survey is Polly Ann Haire Kelley. Maiden name probably was Polly Ann Haire, and she was married to a man named Pate before marring Andrew. However the Baker County 1850 census spells the name, "Hair". In George W. Kelley's obituary in the newspaper, there is reference to his surviving brothers, Jackie Kelley of Lakeland, F. and Jesse D. Pate, of Colquitt. This Jesse can only be a half brother, ie, a son of his Mother by her previous marriage to a man named Pate. Wayne Cook's family history shows Polly Ann as having a child named Dice Pate, married to Willis Cook? The Family Group sheet from Nellie C. Davis spells the name as Polly Ann Hair Pate. Children of Andrew Kelly and Polly Haire are:George Washington Kelley, b Nov. 17, 1876, Baker Conty, Ga.;d Aug. 30 1953, Baker County, Ga. Buried in the Kelley Family Cemetery, Miller Co., Ga. (2) Milbry Ann Kelley, b Feb 18,1880; d May 23, 1946. (3) Andrew Jackson Kelley, b May 12 1884, Baker county, Ga. SSN 263 03 3320; d May 29th 1973, Lakeland Fl. There seems to be two different A. J. Kelley/Kelly's in the Decatur County area. The marriage index list an A.J. Kelley marrying a Mary Dollar on Jan 7 1869, and marring Elizabeth D. Brock on Sept.8 1887. This is just a flag for researcher;s to be aware of. Also, there is an A.J. Kelley buried in the Old Morris Hill Cemetery in Decatur cny, with date of birth of April 25the, 1840, and date of death as Mar. 20, 1919. I hope this helps you. We did our research around 2002 to 2005. If there are any adjustments I need to make, please let me know. Thanks Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Just happened across this - maybe it will help someone: "A Portrait and Biographical Record of Boone and Clinton Counties, Indiana", A.W. Bowen and Company, Chicago, Ill. KELLY, James, a wealthy and prominent citizen of Michigantown, Clinton county, Ind., and one of the oldest settlers, is of sterling Irish descent. His grandfather, James, came to America anterior to the Revolution. At the outbreak of that heroic struggle he cheerfully forsook his farm, and for eight years bore arms against Albion, the perfidious, in the war for American independence; when the war of 1812 was declared, his patriotic blood was again aroused and he was among the first to volunteer in the defense of his adopted country, and died in battle in 1813. His son, David, was but six years old when he lost his father, and, according to the law of the time, was bound out, and learned the baker's trade in Cincinnati, Ohio, then a backwoods village, composed of a few log cabins. After completing his apprenticeship, he married Nancy, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (SHAFFER) WHITEMAN, of Virginia, and of English descent. In 1829 Mr. Kelly came to Indiana and settled in what is now Clinton county, which he later assisted in organizing. To the union of David and Nancy KELLY were born eleven children, viz: James, Catherine, Henry, Elizabeth, Rebecca, John Jacob, William, Mary, and two that died in infancy. James KELLY, the subject proper of this sketch. was the seventh child born in Clinton county, and the third in Michigan township. His birth took place August 6, 1832, and this township has been his residence until the present hour. He was reared on his father's homestead and farming has been his vocation ever since. His education was acquired at one of the most primitive of log schoolhouses, an uncouth structure as compared with the modern brick of today. It had a clapboard door, a puncheon floor and greased paper for window-lights, together with rude slabs for seats. A huge fireplace occupied one end of the room, the chimney being constructed from mud and sticks. They burned small saw-logs in this fireplace-some five or six feet in length and a foot and a half in diameter, which it took all the large boys all the noon to roll on the fire. The master made the pens from the quill of a goose, and this was one of his principal tasks, as the old pioneer fathers insisted that their children should all write well. The teacher boarded around from house to house, not having any permanent abiding place. July 25, 1858, Mr. KELLY married Miss Sarah, daughter of James and Jane SCOTT - early settlers and prominent residents of the township. In 1859, Mr. Kelly settled on his present farm, comprising 270 acres, to which he has largely added and which he has so improved as to make it unexcelled by any other in the county. The children born to Mr. KELLY by his wife Sarah were named Thomas J., John S., James S., and India M. Mrs. Kelly died on December 24, 1869, and May 25, 1871, Mr. KELLY married Christina J. FISHER, daughter of David and Christina (SHIELDS) FISHER, and by this marriage the following children have been born: William D., Laura J., Ellis 0., Daisey M., Omer T., Arta R. Mr. and Mrs. Kelly are members of the Christian church, and in politics he is a populist. pages 741-742.
