Hi Jan, I don't know about ever having heard this before but it fits for our family, the elder relations being very adamant that it can be only Kelly's who are related, no "e" would ever be included in THEIR family name. Anyone else notice that? Or have others found it both ways? Jo
Hi everybody, The other night, I was sharing some family geneaolgy records with an elderly family member. We happened to be looking at the 1850 Federal Census listing for Montgomery County, IN and I was showing the listing for an ancestor, John Kelley. I know it is the listing for him, because 3 of his children are still living in the household and 3 others are in the farms on either side of him. Our branch of the Kelley's has always spelled the last name with 'ey' at the end. However, on the listing it was just 'y'. I had noticed this the first time I saw it but didn't think it was a big deal since all the rest of the info matched. I just assumed that the census taker who came to the door spelled the name the way it sounded to him. My elderly relative, however, was quite upset, and absolutely sure that no matter how much of the other information matched, this gentleman could not be 'our John Kelley'. Why? Because the last name was spelled without the 'ey'. I am told by my relative that to spell Kelley with just the 'y', indicates that the bearer of the name was an Irish Catholic, and that the 'ey' ending indicates that he/she was a Protestant Irishman, and no self-respecting protestant Kelley would allow the name to be spelled with just the Y. Is my elderly relative imagining things? Or am I the only one who has never heard this before? I am trying to locate information on John Kelley in NC from the time he arrived in America (1771) until he crossed the mountains into Greeneville, TN (approx. 1790). During this time, I have been told, he taught school, married Anna Hunter and had three sons: John(b. 1776), Joseph and Andrew. Later records indicate a wife named Margaret and ten other children: Samuel (b.1793), Elizabeth, David (b.1795), Joshua, Daniel A.(b.1805), Jabes (b.1807), Ross (b.1810), Cynthia, Margaret, Polley. Of the first three sons (by Anna), John Kelley, Jr. remained in Greeneville,TN; Joseph's location is unknown; and Andrew moved to Kentucky. The remainder of my Kelley line looks like this: 1. John Kelley(b.1750) m. Anna Hunter 2. A. John Kelley Jr.(b.1776) m. Ellender Harrison B. Andrew Kelley m. Dolley Coleman 3. Wylie Kelley ( son of Andrew Kelley) m. Eliza Ann Kelley (daughter of John Kelley, Jr.) 4. Oliver Madison Kelley (b.1846) m. Emily Camilla Susong 5. George Stuart Kelley (b. 1882) m. Beatrice Harned 6. Emily Eliza Kelley (b. 1922) m. Leo Perry Underwood 7. Jerry Lynn Underwood m. Doris Sue Smith

I'm looking for information on the Shelby James KELLEY family. Shelby was born 1/28/1886 in Hazel Dell, IL. He died 10/23/1955 in Bozeman, MT. He married Letitia Isabella GIBSON on 6/4/1905 in Charleston, IL. She was born 4/18/1886 in Fairview, IL and died 12/20/1967 in Bozeman, MT. They had 4 children, Marion, b. Indiana or Illinois, Archie, b. in Sheridan, MT, and Martha & Dallace, both born in Twin Bridges, MT. All I know about Shelby's family is that he had a sister named Goldie and another named Bonnie (she married a Horton and had a daughter named Ruth). There is also some relative who lives in Indiana named Flora and there's also a half brother named Ray. Letitia was called Belle and her father was Fred GIBSON. He married Susannah Jane COLLINBAUGH in Smithboro, IL. She was born 3/30/1866 and died 7/26/1892, I think, in Smithboro, IL. If I read my notes right, she was buried in Pleasant Bethel, North Corrthington, Green County, Owen Cemetery. Susannah's father was Johann Georg COLENBAUGH, b. 6/30/1823. He married, in 1849, Matilda MOSER. They had Ebon, Alonzo, Mary Ellen, Louisa, Audrey, Amy, Hila Ann, Jessie Alice, and Fletcher in addition to Susannah. The COLLINBAUGHS, formerly the KALMBACHS, are from the Black Forest in Germany, arriving in USA in 1832, with 7 children and $200. They stopped first in OH, then went west to IN in a wagon Johann's father built.. I guess you can probably guess what comes next! I'm looking for information on Shelby & Belle's parentage and families. Margie Helena, MT

Looking for information on this Kelly line of Paterson, N.J. Peter Kelly arrived in US, probably New York City) from Desertmartin, Ireland c. 1848-49. He was born in 1827 and died in April,1880. On his death certificate, his father is listed as Terrence. He worked in the steel mills in Paterson and later became a grocer. Peter married Margaret McGoldrick, daughter of Timothy and Mary McGoldrick, on November 19,1854 at St. Johns Cathedral. He became an Alderman (city councilman) in Paterson in 1870. He resided on Mill Street, as did most of his children in later years. Peter and Margaret had six children: John Francis Kelly, b. Mar. 3, 1859, d. April 13, 1908 was a professional baseball player between 1879 and 1884. He played for the Cleveland Blues, Baltimore Orioles, Phil. Quakers, Cinncinatti Outlaw Reds, and Washington, Nationals. He was known during his baseball days as: "Father John," Honest John," and, "Kick" Kelly. He came back to Paterson and opened a saloon, the Main Street Cafe, which he later operated with two of his brothers. John was single when he died. Margaret Kelly, b. 1865 in Paterson and d. April 15, 1916 in the City. She married James J. Curran who became Paterson City Comptroller. They had three children: James Jr., Grace, and John. Thomas Edward Kelly, b. Jan. 17, 1867, d. July 1907 in the City. "Tommie Eddie" had his leg amputated due to an accident as a child, when a train ran over it. He wore a wooden leg. He was into a third term as a City Alderman when he died of Tuberculosis. He operated the Main Street Cafe with John. He had recently married a Miss Wall. They had no children. Joseph Kelly is my grandfather. He was born in Feb. 1871 and died in Jan. 1917. He married Ellen Faulkner, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Faulkner, on July 1, 1896 at St. Johns Cathedral. Joseph was, like his father and brothers, politically active and headed the Joseph Kelly Association. He worked in the silk trade in Paterson, and later joined his brother in operating the Main Street Cafe. He was the sole owner of the saloon when he died. In his obituary, he is called, "The Boniface of Main Street." Joseph and Ellen had two children: Lillian and Margaret. Lillian married Louis B. Moore in 1924. Margaret married J. Albert Bailey a few years later. Peter Kelly Jr., b. in 1874, was the youngest son and Martha Kelly, b. in 1876, the youngest daughter of Peter and Margaret Kelly. I have no information on them. A family cousin, John Joseph Kelly and his family, still resides in Desertmartin, Ireland. To any who may have information on this line, particularly Peter Jr. and Martha Kelly, the Currans, McGoldricks, or ancestrally related Desertmartin Kellys, I would appreciate a note. Terrence D. I found the following information at: Houston, Missouri: Our History http://train.missouri.org/~chamber/ho00005.htm EMMETT KELLY, SR., the world famous clown: Houston is the hometown of Emmett Kelly, Sr., who was known as "Weary Willie", the world-famous clown. Emmett Kelly, Sr., was born in Sedan, Kansas, on December 9, 1898. His family moved to a farm east of Houston when Kelly was six-years old. He attended school in the Ozark community, east of Houston. When he was twenty-six years old, Kelly's first professional appearance was the the "Old Settlers Reunion" in Houston. He died in his Sarasota, Florida, home and is buried in Lafayette, Indiana. In honoring Houston's famous son, the Houston Area Chamber of commerce hosts an annual Emmett Kelly Clown Festival. Emmett Kelly's son, Emmett Kelly, Jr. (who took over the stage as "Weary Willie" upon his father's retirement) and grandson Joey Kelly, come back every year to make special appearances and join the activities of the festival. The festival is always the first weekend in May. The festival's tenth anniversary was in 1997. This inquiry is a little offbeat, but in my search for my illustrious "Kelly" ancestors am ready to snatch at any little bit of information that I may garner from any quarter. My grandmother always contended that our Kelley's/Kelly's were related to the famous clown Emmett Kelly from the Ringling Brothers circus, but all the info that I have been able to find has been very sketchy and non informative at best. If anyone can tell me where I may look for more extensive Genealogical info would be most thankful. By the way my Kelly's are ggrandmother Emily Alice or Alice Emily born 1880. Mothers name was Elizabeth Holder. Found in Du Quoin Illinois. That is about the extent of my information. If someone can point me in the right direction................Please respond directly to rldalton@email.msn.com. Barbara
Here is the latest fragment concerning Willis KELLY, whom I have discussed previously. I now know that he married Dordana (Dardania) CAPRON in Uxbridge, Worchester County, Massachusetts, with marriage intentions filed with the city clerk on Nov. 21, 1795. Willis and Dordana were parents of Miranda, Willis C., Patty, and Elam. Miranda married a COOK, Patty married a KNOTT, and Elam married Sarah Holland. Willis later divorced Dordana, and married Charity Hollingsworth in South Carolina and had six more children before moving to Union County, Indiana. However, that is a whole other story which I have previously posted. I would be pleased to communicate with anyone having interest in this family. Jim Kelly JKelly4425@aol.com

My great grandmother Adeline Christine Kelley had a younger sister Bridget that lived in the Bangor/ Hampden area of Maine -- born in 1880. She may have married an Adrien Pinette of Patten, Maine in November 1912 in Bangor, Maine. Hoping to find additional information.
