Seasons Greeting to All Kelley Kin!! What a great idea to post "most wanteds". I am looking for the parents of John (Red) Kelley who was born in GA Mar 29, 1805. He married Martha Ann Franklin (dau of Esom Franklin and Martha Tolbert) born 1815 in GA. (Would love any info on her parents as well). John died on Sep 12, 1883 and Martha died in 1887. They moved to Traveller's Rest in Coosa County, AL and then settled in Eldridge, Walker County, AL. They had 14 children - David, Elizabeth, Esom, James, Philemon (Buck), John, Benjamin, Tolbert, Louis, Christopher, Francis, Martha, George and Nancy. My great grandfather was Benjamin. Hi Sue and All, You are very lucky to have these clippings, because they contain information that might enable you to pinpoint this Kelly family in the census. Since Howard Kelly was 10 years old when he was killed in 1908, he should show up in the 1900 census of Brooklyn as a 2 year old in the household of his father, James Kelly, perhaps even at 208 Halsey St. Also, knowing that the Beil family lived very close by may facilitate the search. I would use the Soundex and look for James Kelly as head of household, then I would try to find the family in 1910. Also, since you have the date he died, you might find an obituary for him in one or more of these newspapers, and that might give more family information. If you live near a large library, see the book entitled Newspapers in Microform. It may list early 20th century newspapers. Good Luck. Let us know what you find. Charles Walker

Same incident Hand written (April 25th, 1908) World SURGEON IMPERILS HIS LIFE FOR DUTY Crawls Under Heavy Car, Upheld by Citizens, to Save Boy's Life Howard Kelly the ten-year-old son of James Kelly of No. 228 Halsey street, Brooklyn, was killed at 6 o'clock last night by a Putnam-Halsey car operated by Motorman Patrick Snyder. The boy was on roller skates, and it appears that when in front of No. 1897 Halsey street and while skating in the same direction as that in which the car was proceeding, he turned in front of the car in an attempt to crossed the street. The car at the time was speeding, as is usual in the middle of the long blocks in that part of Brooklyn. The street was crowded, and without waiting for a wrecking crew some of the pedestrians lifted one side of the car by sheer strength, and more of them braced the other side so that it did not fall while Ambulance Surgeon Sammis crawled under the extricated the body of the boy, meanwhile taking a chance that the strength of those who sustained the car would not fail. The accident occurred during the height of the run hour and traffic was tied up for more than an hour. With a score of other boys, young Kelly was roller skating on the asphalt. One of them suggested a game of "snap the whip," and Kelly was one of the smaller boys at the end of the line. The big boy at the head on the line swung the others about just as the car, in charge of Patrick Snyder, came along. Howard Kelly was "snapped" directly in front of the car, the fender hit him and he was ground to death beneath the wheels and forward truck. Reserves from the Gates avenue station were called out to drive back the big crowd that quicqly collected. More than a hundred men got about the car and helped raise it from the body of the boy. The motorman was arrested on a charge of homicide.

Two Little Companions Witnessed the Affair-Women Passengers Become Hysterical While playing with his little companions in the street yesterday afternoon, ten-year-old Howard Kelly, who lives with his parents at No. 228 Halsey street, was knocked down and run over by a Halsey street car and was instantly killed. The outside wheel of the car ran over the middle of the little chap's body, breaking the spinal column and mangling the body terribly. The motorman was arrested on a charge of himicide. >From the account of the accident given by the boy's playmates, James and Myron Beil, seven and ten years old, respectively, who live at No. 203 Halsey street, the accident occurred shortly before 6 o'clock on Halsey street near Marey avenue. The threes boys had been rolloing hoops and, just before the car came along, they were in the gutter, struggling over the possession of a hoop. Howard succeeded in getting it away from the others and darted acrossed the tracks with the Beil boy in full chase. West-bound car No. 2526 was coming along at what witnesses describe an ordinary rate and Howard darted directly in front of it. He went down between the fender and the forward truck went over him before Motorman Peter Snider of No 696 Hancock Street stopped the car. The boy's body was clear of the rails when he was lifted out. Officer Harry Thompson was on post half a block away and he ran to the spot when he saw the crowd and placed Snider under arrest. The accident was witnessed by a number of people, but no one attempted to molest the motorman, who was much distressed over the accident. Some of the women passengers in the car became hysterical when they were told the little fellow was dead. Snider was arraigned in the Gates avenue court to-day on a charge of homicide and was held in $2,000 for examination on May 10. Bonds were furnished by the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company.

The name O'Kelly, Kelly, Kelley, Kellie and O Ceallaigh is the second commonest surname in Ireland and approximately half a million people worldwide would bear the name. Many of the Kelly would have descended from Maine Mor, King of Hymany. His kingdom covered an area of two hundred square miles in the Counties of Galway and Roscommon.
