    3. Just want to remind everyone, since reading Greg's message, that this list IS for the KELLY surname, as well as KELLEY, O'KELLY and even KELLIE. This list was created in January 1996 for KELLEY and any spelling variation, as described in the RootsWeb surname list. In my own family we have the name spelled both ways (KELLY and KELLEY) and some records even have the name spelled both ways on one record. Greg, you may just find your connection right here on this list. Happy Hunting! 1. Why so many KELL(E)Y's in AL and GA?
    2. Firewalker
    3. I have noticed during our posts that a great many KELL(E)Y's moved from their place of birth, origin, or immigration point to GA and AL. It seems an overwhelming amount moved to a few certain counties. Please correct me if I am wrong. Based upon the time periods, history and places, why would all of these KELL(E)Y's move to those places? Was there some overwhelming reason such as jobs, land, etc. that would cause them to move there? If so what was it? I know this was a route of migration during the 1800's and on over to Texas, but could it be just that? I guess I am eluding to the fact could they all be related or connected in some way or another? It seems so many and so many remain unconnected. Are we overlooking an obvious connection somewhere? Sorry....just brainstorming here. Although I cannot find a connection somewhere I know this will aid everyone. I pray that each of you find your dead end KELL(E)Y's...... Mike Kelly firewalker@gibralter.net

    3. Hi All, I have newspaper clipping for "NOTICE OF PETITION FOR ADMINISTRATION in District Court of Iowa in and for Delaware County May Term 1915" in which a number of Kellys are listed as possible beneficiaries of the estate (in any event less than $1,000 in 1915) of Catherine (Morrisey) Cummings who died on December 31, 1910. 1. Most Wanted: Charles James Kelley, WI 1856
    2. Jim Kelley
    3. ISO: ancestors and any related information on the family of Charles James Kelley, born Aug 31, 1855 (or 56), probably in Wisconsin. No info before this time. He married Ida U. Burlew (or Berlow). They married in Fair Haven, Huron County Michigan in Oct 1876. They had the following children and according to census data, all were born in Wisconsin: Charles O.(b.Oct 1879); Frances G. (b. Aug 1881); Emily J. (b.Apr 1883); Levelia-aka "Hattie" (b. Feb 1885); Walter W. (b. Jan 1887); Fred J. (b. Aug 27, 1888 in Wood County); and Eva (b. July 15, 1891). They lived in and around the central Wisconsin area including Wood County and Juneau County. and then, sometime between 1900 and 1910, Charles, Ida and several of the children moved to Oregon. The father of Charles James Kelley is "reported" to have been Owen Kelley. It was also popularly believed that Owen had lived in the Milwaukee area and that he may have had a medical practice. (WI state historical society and medical society do not have him listed as such, however), but he could have had Ireland, Michigan, or New York roots as his wife's (Ida) family had come from Prattsburgh,Steuben County, NY. The ancestors of Charles James Kelley remain a mystery - after almost 15 years of looking. If you find them, please tell them their descendants are looking "high and low". :) Regards, Jim Kelley "on the prairies of Kansas" Jim Kelley kelley@twsuvm.uc.twsu.edu

    1. KELLY, Pvt. George W., Co. H, 10th Indiana Cavalry, U.S. Civil War
    2. Greg Reeves
    3. Hi List! I'm new to your list and intend only to stay briefly; I have no ancestors (that I know of) with the KELLEY surname... However, I *would* like very much to converse "off-list" w/ anyone who might have a Private George W. KELLY," Co. H, 10th Indiana Cavalry (125th Volunteer Infantry)" during the U.S. Civil War in their family. Here's why: I suspect that Pvt. KELLY served alongside my 2nd Lt. Thomas B. REEVES, Co. C, 10th Indiana Cavalry, late in the U.S. Civil War. Both were captured, paroled, and were on the Sultana steamship when she exploded on the Mississippi River on 27 APR 1865. Unfortunately, both men died in the disaster that's now dubbed, "The Titanic of the Mississippi." FYI, Indiana's 10th Cavalry was organized at Columbus, Vincennes, Terre Haute, New Albany and Indianapolis, Ind., between 30 DEC 1863 and 30 APR 1864. That means (basically) that any "George W. KELLY" born between 1825 and 1845 in the southern half of Indiana, U.S.A. *may* be the soldier I'm hoping to learn more about... I know from NARA records that my Tom, and two other 10th IN Cavalry officers were imprisoned at Andersonville and I suspect that Pvt. George W. KELLY, Co. H, may have been as well... Consequently, I'd like to hear from ANYONE who can answer any/all the following questions: 1. When was "Pvt. George W. KELLY, Co. H, 10th IN Cavalry" captured? 2. Where was "Pvt. George W. KELLY, Co. H, 10th IN Cavalry" captured? 3. Where was "Pvt. George W. KELLY, Co. H, 10th IN Cavalry" imprisoned? 4. Do any photos, letters, diaries, etc. remain from George W. KELLY's life? My bottom-line is this: I'm trying simply to "re-create" the details surrounding Tom's last 6 months of life and am hoping to correspond w/ descendants/relatives of any/all Tom's 10th Cavalry comrades... Again, I subscribed to your KELLEY list for this purpose alone and will again be "unsubscribing" later today so anyone w/ any information should contact me directly at: greg@rapidnet.com. Thanks! And thanks for you'all's indulgence! Greg Reeves SULTANA-L, ANDERSONVILLE-L, and REEVES-L Listowner GGG Nephew of Lt. Tom REEVES: http://www.rapidnet.com/~greg/Tom greg@rapidnet.com

    1. Most Wanted Kelly
    2. Ernie Kelly
    3. My most wanted Kelly would be James Kelly, father of John McNeill Kelly, born 21 Jan 1875 in Clarkton, NC. A great uncle (John McNeill Kelly, Jr.) says James and his family were in Bladen County NC in both the 1860 and 1875 census, but were gone in 1880 and show up again in Georgia in 1890. James' children are thought to be (in no particular order): John McNeill (my line) William (founded/co-founded Consolidated Naval Stores of Jacksonville & was officer of Barnett Bank until his death at work in the 1930s) Donald Claude (Became MD and lived and died in Hartford, CT. Treated many children burned in fire in an orphanage) Jeannette (sp?) Mary Margaret James (middle unknown) Kelly died and was buried in 1910 in Valdosta, GA. John M. Kelly and family after that settled in the panhandle of Florida and in the West Palm Beach area. I have lots of information on the decendants of John McNeill and his wife Annie Holloway (b. Flora Home 7 May 1878), but have nothing on James, his spouse, siblings or parents. Anecdotal evidence has my Kellys marrying into the McNeills (lineage of James Abbott McNeill Whistler) in or near Brown Marsh Station (nowBladen County), NC in the mid 1800s. But I don't know whether they immigrated there or moved there from some other part of the US. I know the past four generations of Kellys have carried the McNeill name, and we've been predominantly Presbyterian, but I'm open to suggestions, corrections and comments. Can anyone direct me to a line of Kellys and McNeills or to something that would put me in close proximity to James, his wife and his past? Thanks! Ernie Kelly Orlando

    1. Most Wanted
    2. Congratulations on your great KELLEY list, Paula, and thanks for requesting our most wanted Kelleys. Its a lot of fun to get all the requests. But, I would like to again request this list to be sent to me in digest mode. How do I do that? As for my most wanted, it is JOHN KELLY (or may be KELLEY). He was born in Co. Kerry, Ire., the son of PATRICK and ELLEN (DONOGHUE) KELLY. He was said to be 10 years older than his brother, my great-grandfather, Patrick KELLEY. (Yes, the name was spelled differently.) Patrick Kelley was born in 1855, that would mean John was born @ 1845. John moved from Utah to Chicago, Illinois. He had at least two children, daughters, Lu (FANNING) and Florence (O'NEILL). My parents visited Lu and Florence in 1951, but we lost touch with the family after that. Looking for their descendants and any family information. Thank you. Patsy

    1. John Kelley/Hannah Moon: July 10, 1782; Guilford Co.,NC
    2. Hi Bill and Gayle, When I saw your Most Wanted Kelley I could not believe my eyes. Did you find a Marriage Bond or Church Record of the marriage of John Kelley and Hannah Moon? Who signed as Security, etc? I have tracked this family back in time from Wilcox Co.,Ala. to Georgia and to Guilford Co.,NC. I would appreciate any information you can give me on John Kelley in Guilford Co.,NC. He is my GGGgrandfather. I am including the File I have compiled on this Family. I anxiously await your reply. Best Regards, Raymond Kelly RAYMOND A. KELLY JR. 18703 Lakeshore Drive Lutz, Florida 33549 (813) 949-2017 February 6.1998 "The Family of John Kelley and Hannah Moon" I have compiled the following family group from public records, county history, and family tradition. * John Kelley, Born C. 1765 Married circa 1786(probably Guilford County, North Carolina) * Hannah Moon, Born C. 1765 Daughter of Richard Moon and Susannah Brown CHILDREN: Jesse Kelley: Born 1788, Georgia: Died 1834, Clarke County, Alabama Robert Kelley: Born 1789, Georgia John W. Kelly: Born 1790, Georgia: Died January 24, 1848, Wilcox County, Alabama Austin Kelly: Born 1790-1800, Georgia Asa Kelly: Born 1790-1800, Georgia: Died 1849, Wilcox County, Alabama Allen Kelly: Enoch S. Kelly: Born 1799, Georgia: Died October 10, 1850, Wetumpka, Coosa Co., Alabama D. Boston Kelly: Born 1800, Georgia Margaret Kelly: Born 1805, Georgia The family migrated from Clarke County, Georgia to the area that is now Clarke County, Alabama in 1809. "John Kelley was an early settler near Jackson(Washington/Clarke County) Alabama. He and hia wife were in McGrew's Fort" (Before 1812) (1). Jesse Kellay and Robert Kellay are both listed in the 1810 Census of Washington County, Mississippi Territory. "John was six feet two and a half inches in height. His brother Jesse Kelley, weighed three hundred and sixty five pounds. They came from Georgia. The family moved to Wilcox County after the War of 1812, settling east of Choctaw Corner in Dr. Southall's neighborhood." (2) John and Jesse Kelley are both recorded on the Tax Roll of Clarke County, Mississippi Territory in 1813. Jesse Kelley is listed on the Clarke County Tax Roll of 1814. John W. Kelly served in the Mississippi Territory Militia at Fort Claiborne from September 1814 until January 1815. Robert and Jesse are listed on the Clarke County Tax Roll in 1815. In the 1816 Census of Clarke County, Jesse Kelly is listed with a wife and six children in his household. Hanna Kelly is listed with no male in the household over 21, four males under 21 and four females under 21. I have found no further record of Hanna Kelly in Clarke County, Alabama. Unfortunately the 1820 Census of Clarke County, Alabama is not available. The brothers John and Jesse Kelly with their families are listed in the 1820 Census of Wilcox County, Alabama. The first public record I have found of Asa Kelley is the 1830 Census of Wilcox County where he is listed with his wife and two young boys. I have compiled detailed family histories on Jesse, John W., and Asa from 1800 up to current descendants. I have limited data on the other children of John and Hanna Kelley. JOHN AND HANNA KELLEY PRIOR TO MIGRATING TO ALABAMA John and Hannah Kelley were in Clarke County, Georgia living on the Apalachee River in 1806. Their son Jesse married Sarah Lucy Pierce in Jackson County, Georgia September 22, 1806. Clarke County, Georgia was formed from Jackson County in 1802. Another son Robert Kelly was married to Martha Magee, September 1, 1806 in Jackson County. Georgia law required the marriage certificate to be issued in the home county of the bride. There were five Kelley families who appear to be related who moved to this district on the Apalachee(GMD239) when it was part of Jackson County in 1801. The head of households were David, William, John, Jesse, and Tyre Kelley. John and William were in the district through 1805. The family name is also spelled Calley, Kelly during this time depending on the preference of the Tax Collector. Four of the five families were living in the Island Creek area(GMD104) of Hancock County, Georgia in 1794. The head of households were David, William, John, and Jesse. John Pearce the father of Sarah Lucy Pierce who married Jesse Kelly in 1806 also lived in the same district. The Jesse that is listed as head of household here in Hancock County is probably an uncle of the young Jesse , son of John and Hannah Kelly. Jesse Kelley sold 60 acres on Big Island Creek to John Kelly on July 5, 1799. John Kelly sold this property to Thomas Lewis on August 5, 1799. Since neither John nor Jesse is listed in GMD104 in 1802 I believe they must have removed to the Jackson County area in 1799. In 1793 David, Jesse, John, Thomas, and William Kelley are listed in Capt. McDowell's Company of the Washington County Militia. It is highly likely that they are in the Island Creek area of Washington County which was included in Hancock County in December 1793. There is a William and a Jesse Kelly in the Long Creek District(GMD154) of Wilkes County in 1790. There is a David Kelley in this district in 1792. There are no Kellys listed in the district in 1793. The Long Creek District(GMD154) was included in Warren County in December 1793. Richard Moon, the father of Hannah Moon resided in the Long Creek District in 1790 although he owned property in Greene County. I am currently researching the Public Records of Guilford and Rowan Co.,N.C. for information on John And Hannah Kelley. I have not found a marriage record for them . I would appreciate any information concerning John and Hannah Kelley and their descendants.
