    3. So, when researching Kelley (my maiden name) I also have to search for Kelly or as I've also heard O'Kelley/O'Kelly ? I don't have a clue as to where to start in Ireland. Barbara

    2. Some of us repeat this on occasion, don't get caught up with the spelling of Kelley/Kelly. My mother spelled her name Kelley, her brother spelled it Kelly. Her uncle taught his older kids Kelly and the younger ones Kelley. So don't make anything of how it is spelled. Ruth ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    3. Hi Bridget. I don't think we're realted, but I was wondering if you have any indication that your family's surname was KELLY when they were in Ireland. I have KELLY ancestors from Glenflesk, just outside of Killarney. When the KELLY siblings emigrated to America, some changed their surname to KELLEY and some kept KELLY. They settled in Utah, NY, and Massachusetts in the 1870's. Thanks, and good luck. ~Patsy~ ----- Original Message ----- From: <kelley-request@rootsweb.com> To: <kelley@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 29, 2007 3:19 AM Subject: KELLEY Digest, Vol 2, Issue 165 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. 2. Thanks for responding Raymond. Here is what I know about my family: I am researching families in SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, PA and BLUEFIELD, WV with the last name of KELLEY. I have been searching for my great great grandfather’s family for a good number of years. His name was JOHN KELLY/KELLEY and he was born in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland around 1828. He immigrated to the United States in 1852. He met his future wife while traveling across the Atlantic on a ship called Rip Van Winkle. Her name was ELLEN NOLAN and she was from Tipperary, Ireland. She may have been born in Thurles around 1831.    John and Ellen moved to Shenandoah, PA and lived for a time at 233 North Jardin Street. They also lived in New Castle, PA. They had the following children:   Michael – 1855 John – 1857 Mary – 1859 Martin – 1861 James – 1863 Patrick – 1865 Margaret (Maggie) 1867 William – Abt. 1869   John was a miner. He may have died in a mining accident in the Little Diamond Colliery on June 30, 1886 but I am not positive about this. My great grandfather was PATRICK J. KELLEY and he moved from Schuylkill County to Bluefield, West Virginia. I know that his brother MARTIN KELLEY was close to Patrick because he served as the best man at Patrick’s wedding. * * * * * * Kelly, John, age 50, miner, b. Ireland Ellen, age 39, keeping house, b. 2. George Kelly
    3. Many Kelly's are R1b Haplogroup and may want to find out which Oxford Genetic Atlas Project (OGAP) they are. By picking those haplotype markers identified below and subtracting 389-1 from 389-2 their OGAP Group can be determined. See the article below AND the link provided. ----- Original Message ----- From: Pat Benham To: DNA-ANTHROGENEALOGY@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, October 23, 2007 7:42 AM Subject: [DNA-ANTHROGENEALOGY] Re: Geographic Patterns of Haplogroup R1b in the British Isles by Ca Jim is right. This is a very important article that strips away the veil that some experts put upon their findings. Some of the more technical terminology in the article can be glossed over on a first read. What is most useful is the map at the end which will help any British Isles R1b's to locate themselves in a fairly general way and to see where they fit into the Oxford Genetic Atlas Project analysis. My own maternal grandfather was R1b1c (FTDNA). According to the conclusions of this article he falls into the sub-clade (is that the right term here?) OGAP3. Unfortunately, though slightly more represented in Southern England, this is an old and geographically diffused type and harder to pin down. You will need to subtract your 389-1 from your 389-2 result to comply with the OGAP calculation of 389-2. We are still dealing with too few markers but at least the door is now open here on previously unclear aspects of the work of Sykes and Oppenheimer on Britain. Our 114 Test Results represent 79 unique, unrelated, KELLY/KELLEY/O'KELLY Families. This means that when Surnames were adopted in Ireland about 900 AD that 79 different Families adopted the Surname KELLY (Gaelic Equivalent). DNA Testing is the only practical method to determine from which KELLY Clan we descend. Since there are a large number of Unique KELLY Clans we are going to have to get a large number of participants to find matches for those of us who haven't yet found a match. Studies done by Geneticist at Trinity University in Dublin. indicate that Murphy and Kelly are the two most popular Surnames in Ireland. However, DNA Studies carried out by the University indicate that the large number of people with Surname Kelly is due to multiple family founders as opposed to a single patrilineal line with a large number of descendants. Please contact your fellow KELLY/KELLEY/O'KELLY researchers and encourage them to participate. There are 62 of us who are still without a match. 3. What I just read made me think about what I have always heard passed down from my mother and grandmother (after a long absence I recently starting getting my feet wet again in genealogy). I have my family -- John Kelley born late 1700's in Tennessee family came on over on Ship Calf from Ireland. Family stories are they were German, went to Ireland and on to US. My question has anyone studied migration from Germany to Ireland in the 1600's or 1700's, how long they would have stayed in Ireland (thinking a German woman married an Irish Kelley man and onto the US), I just haven't looked into the migration part yet.
