    1. Bertie Co Families
    2. Greetings to the Kellam list: I came across a searchable internet site recently for NC soldiers in the War of 1812. There were at least six listed, and I doubt that there will be anything new here, but the search caused me to realize anew the research problems caused by the many variation found for the Kellam name. When you do a search, you only get the exact name that you ask for. The six names that I found came from four different name variations that I tried, and there might have been others that I missed. I was surprised not to find any listing for Killiam and other variations of the Kill beginning. Those found were as follows: Name County   Samuel Kellum Guilford Isma Kellum Wake Robert Calum Wake David Kellam Rockingham Sion Callum Bladen Augustus Callum Bertie Most of those on the list come from areas and families that have been discussed on the list from time to time. However, I don’t recall that we have spoken very often of the Bertie Co. families. I have done some research there on other family lines and have noticed the name of Callum on several occasions. The first mention was on a tax list of 1757 where Edward Callum was named. Found on the 1790 census were Willis Callum and David Callum. Willis Callum made his will in 1816 in which he mentioned children: Edward A. Callum, Hezekiah W. Callum, and Polly G. Callum. I am wondering if Edward A. Callum might have been the Augustus Callum from Bertie Co. who served in the War of 1812. Because I have seen no other Callum in the early Bertie records, I am assuming that Edward of 1757 was the father of Willis and David of 1790. Willis appeared to have two sons over 16 in the census of 1790, which would place his marriage back to 1772 or before and his birth back to 1750 or before. This would likely mean that Edward Callum of 1757 Bertie was born by 1725 or before. Does anyone know who this Edward is, or see an Edward not accounted for at such an early date? I do see where an Edward Kellam of Accomack, VA, made his will in 1736 naming sons as Edward, John, Richard, and Arthur, but I have no idea what happened to this Edward. My best regards to all, Ron
