    1. Re: [KELLAM] Ryton on Dunsmore Kellams
    2. I missed the earlier queries but I presume you are talking about Dunsmore in England. There are two well documented families, apparently unrelated, which came to the US from different areas in England. Richard Kellam came to the Eastern Shore of Virginia in the 1630s. It is my understanding that his line comes from the Kelham area near Nottinghamshir. The other group descends from an Austin Kelham who sailed fromYarmouth on the "Mary Ann" on May 11, 1637 and landed at Salem, MA. I understand his line comes from the St. James / Dennington, Suffolk area. Since you may be aware of these lines I will not get specific. If you are interested, there are many individuals who know a lot more than I about these surnames. I am sure they will respond with verified details if you indicate an interest. Ron Kellems

    3. Hi Dorothy, I'm not sure where Maxie is, but I gather it's some distance away from Ryton on Dunsmore in Warwickshire. I do have a remote Sheffield connection though. Ann Kellam's son, Richard Dowell (my GGGrandfather) spent some time there and in fact my GGrandmother, Rose Ann Dowell, was born there. I have no idea why he was so far away from home, but returned to Birmingham when Rose was 2. It's quite possible he was going to school or working for the railroad, but it's also quite possible he had family in the north, as I vaguely remember my Grandmother telling me something like that. It would also explain why I can't find many of the siblings. I'm also aware of another large family of Kellams, that are unrelated to mine, from Gloucestershire. I'm not sure exactly where but I can try and find out. What I do recall about them is most of them relocated to Australia and New Zealand, as many of mine did. I have no idea exactly who it might be or where they relocated to but I picked up the information from Genforum from a Laurie Kellam, who is from Austrailia. Let me know if there's anything I can do, who knows maybe we're related. 1. [KELLAM] Welcome to the Kellam Surname List!
    2. Mike and Donna Kellen
    3. Thanks for your kind welcome note (attached), it would be great to find some unknown cousins. My last name is KELLEN, and my family roots go back to Western Kentucky's Union and Henderson Counties in 1836. It was then my gggrandfather William Ennis KELLEN (1827-1878) and his brother Thomas KELLEN (1832-1858) were "Bound out" children due to the deaths of their parents, John and Polly. William was adopted by the BUCKMAN family and Thomas by the MULLER family. They lived the rest of their lives around Smith Mills, Kentucky in Henderson County. William married Mary Ann BOWLES in 1848 and Charity Ann GRIGGS in 1851. He and Charity had 12 children, including my ggrandfather Thomas James KELLEN (1855-1944). Thomas James married Hanna Graham Brown and they had 4 children, including my grandfather Add Young KELLEN. Add married Mary Elizabeth Reddick in 1915 and they had 4 children, including my father James Allen KELLEN. All these KELLENs lived in and around Smith Mills, Morganfield and Sturgis, Ky. The name KELLEN is pronounced and spelled several ways, including KEELAND, KEYLON, KEELIN, KEELING. I'm not sure if there's a connection to KELLAM, but it is certainly very close. I am looking for anything on John and Polly KELLEN, as I only know their names from 1836 Union County, KY court records when their two sons were put out for adoption. I have no proof of where they came from, but suspect IRELAND or GERMANY. Thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to provide assistance. Regards. 3. Hi there Aimee, I wonder... My Kelham family came from Maxie near Peterborough I have Matthew bpt 1813 (my umpty ggrandad) and Peter bpt1820 sons and daughter Frances bpt1815 of Ann and William. There was a Henry son of William bapt in1711 at the same church My family changed their name to Kellam during the 1800s when they lived in Sheffield even though Matthew Henry, Matthew's son kept the original spelling on the Census but not in the Trade Directories. Looking in the Census strays showed more Kelhams in the general Deeping area. I will have to take a tour of the area to see what I can find when Im next on Hols. 3. Hi Brenda, Here's what I have on my Kellam family from Ryton on Dunsmore. I'm sorry to say I have no information on any Kellams who may have travelled to the States. Our family moved to Canada, where I live, just after WW2 and had lost track of any Kellam relatives many years before that. My GGGGrandmother was Ann Kellam (b. Oct 30, 1808) in Ryton, she married Thomas Dowell (b. Aug 8, 1803) from Bubbenhall, which is a few miles away from Ryton on Dunsmore. Her parents were Thomas Kellam (b. abt 1765) and Elizabeth Baylis, for whom I have no dates of birth. They were married on Dec 29, 1801 in Hillmorton, Warwickshire. In addition to Ann, they had at least one other son, William Kellam (b. Jan 2, 1811) but I'm sure there were more. Thomas' father was William Kellam (b. born in 1719) in Ryton on Dunsmore and married Sarah (I have no info on her). They had at least 2 other sons, George (b. 1750) and William (b. 1752) but I have no other info on them. I know William's father was also named William but I have no dates of birth etc for him. I only know he had a brother named John B. Kellam who was born in Ryton in 1726, but there were probably more siblings. I have a few other Kellam names going back to the 1500's in Ryton on Dunsmore, but no way of connecting them to my direct line, although I'm sure they are related as Ryton is a fairly small town. I hope this stuff helps, although it's a bit sketchy, but it's all I have at present. Let me know if I can be of any help or if you may be related.
