Last year when my brother and I were doing some research and needed pictures of old tombstones, we used a new pump sprayer, like you would use for spraying bugs, filled it with water, and used a very soft brush on a handle. The sprayer, after being pumped was gentle and cleaned the stone nicely along with the brush, and the stone became darker when wet and took an excellent picture! We were amazed at how great the pictures came out after we had wet the stones. But make sure the brush you use is soft!! The water will loosen any debris eventually, just be patient.
